The door swings both ways fellas. If the Rangers win the Presidents Trophy and fail to win the Cup, let's be honest, it's not going to be because of the history Presidents Trophy winners have. Same goes for the Rangers winning the Presidents Trophy not equaling winning the Cup (and for winning the East, and for having the highest point total since, you guessed it '94). History isn't going to repeat itself when it's an entirely new era of the NHL. I'm not one to take much solace in omens. Reoccurances like these don't have anything to do with the ties to past successes, it just shows that we have another solid team on our hands with the capability of winning it all.
And don't forget, the Rangers won a President's Trophy before that in '91-'92 on their way to winning it again in '93-'94. By some of the logic on here, it would be more accurate to think they'll have to win it once more before delivering the Cup.
This isn't the same as past Presidents Trophy winners. It's not like one team blew way ahead of everyone else and had a ten point lead. Going into the final night, you have three teams that could win it.
Things will be a bit more clear after tonight. If Vancouver loses and the Rangers win, the PT is clinched. Also, if Florida gets a point they clinch the division and 3rd seed, or if Washington wins they still have a shot at first and the Rangers could end up playing the Panthers in round 1. But if Washington loses this and their last game (vs NY), and the Sabres find a way to win both theirs, NYR would play Buffalo. So still a lot of open questions, even in the West
The original thinking was to make OT more exciting. When they first started the OT, if you lost you got nuttin. So teams would play VERY conservative in OT because they didnt want to play for 65 minutes and walk away with nothing. My opinion though is all it did was make teams play very conservative in teh last 5 minutes of regulation to ensure they get at least a point. So its the same shit. Now that theres the shootout, I htink they should drop the point for getting to OT
Ties suck, which is one of the biggest reasons why soccer sucks and most sports fans in the United States hate soccer. Getting rid of ties in hockey is best thing they could have ever done and IMO it's been one of the leading factors in the recent rise in popularity of the NHL You need a winner, not some pussy "everybody gets a medal" euro bullshit. Win like a champ, or take your loss like a man, end of story.
