I think the thing that bothers me is that Holmes ALWAYS turns the conversation to him. He should not be evaluating a season based on catches, rather wins. Why does he need to make it about HIM; its a fucking team sport. I understand that recievers are on the "island" but they need a strong ground game, the ability to block down the field, play decoy, as well as catch the ball when thrown to them. Catches are a part of a recievers job, but so are the other little things. I think Santonio, like many recievers, foregt about thoese things and focus only on catches.
Holmes is being a team leader, answering questions posed by the media in an articulate and reaonable way. Nothing he said contradicts what I understand the Jet plans to be, which is NOT a college type two Qb offense. The ridiculous Holmes haters in the Jet fan base would whine about him if he said the sun rose in the east and set in the west. No real story here.
I disagree. You can paint it that the "media" has it out for Holmes and they may. But why do they? He has yet to take accountability for his actions last year and is basically a two faced, self centered, whiner. So, yes, the Media and the fans that see this will not cut him any slack until he "mans up". Truth is, he never will, so the onslaught continues. Furthermore, like I said in my post above; he needs to lead by example and do the little things, even when the ball is not comming his way. Temper his frustrations. I would bet Holmes would be happy with a 10 catch 150 yard day and a jets loss more then he would with a 1 catch 20 yard performence. Why? because he is not a team player, never has been...Hope to god he grows up
He didn't even complain until the Dolphins game when everything went to shit. Sparano will get the football to the best players unlike Schotty. Holmes is a team first player, people that call him selfish need to ask Stephen Hill if they feel the same way, he's been helping him out from day one. No bias due to my avatar but Holmes didn't do anything wrong in that interview. People complain when he doesn't say shit yet when he finally does people bitch. What do you want from him?
SO this isnt selfish? He dosent even admist that he was at fault in Miami, if he did I could move past it. and AGIAN, he IS SELFISH, he points out his "streak" "It was one game. One chance that both of us (messed) up. That's all it was," Holmes said, referring to he and Sanchez. "One game that we (messed) up and it happened to be the last one of the season. Whatever everybody else took from it, it wasn't good on our behalf. We didn't make the playoffs, so it made it look that much worse. "I broke my streak of 170-something games with a catch in it, I (messed) that up. No catches in the game, that looked bad. We didn't make the playoffs, we got blown out by the Miami Dolphins, it all just looked bad. Whatever happened, it was all bad."
Haters gonna hate. Holmes is articulate and reasonable in interviews. The Jets put him out there in post game pressers. He is highly paid, and a veteran. He has a SB MVP. He is the Jets' best skill position player. Nothing he said is wrong. He is right. It does not contradict the Jet party line. No story here. The real story is why so many in the Jet fanbase hate him.
Listen, nobody's quicker to criticize holmes than yours truly, but this is a perfect example of the NY media playing with your mind by titling all of their articles in a negative fashion. There is absolutely nothing wrong with what he said, i would title his quotes "Holmes gives a vote of confidence to Sanchez."
you remember the Philly game last season? That's basically all it took for me to become anti Holmes.......I tried my best to stomach the self congradulatory first down celebrations regardless of situation, and did for a while..the Philly game was the tipping point.......the Dolphin game was just more shit on the pile. This is why he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt from media or fans and why anything he says could possibly be taken out of context......he brought any doubts about his intentions or priorities on himself. How articulate or reasonable he is in interviews has got nothing to do with it.
Huh??? How do know what the HC and Team plan is.... From what i understand the plan is for Tebow to be Punt protector and Wild cat option.. THATS IT.... And that's what Tone is saying. No a 1 QB system would not work - that's NOT what we have here!!!! Awesome Job Tone!!!!
He was trying to fire up his team - The guy is 100% into WINNING - Losing makes him pissy. Like someone said before - You don't go from Super Bowl to 50 Million dollars to note getting the ball AND losing while being a happy camper- NO TOP WR IN THE NFL DOES.... people might not know cuz they are too young and the media was different but, Jerry Freaking Rice was a crying, whining Throw me the Ball baby - THEY ALL ARE.
I don't know who's idea the Tebow trade was -- Woody Johnson's, Mike Tannenbaum's or Rex Ryan's -- but I really don't think it was to be a long-term backup QB because the team had just signed Drew Stanton to backup Sanchez like a week before. Stanton was only traded because he went ballistic when he heard about the trade. That the Jets complied so quickly leads me to suspect that maybe hints or even promises were made to Stanton about getting an opportunity to start. IOW, the FO was already looking for an alternative to Sanchez. I have always thought that Tebow was brought in to replace Sanchez, probably sooner rather than later. I don't think that's a particularly good idea despite Sanchez's short-comings, but better the Jets than the Bills. Certainly Ryan and Sparano would seem to be more amenable to trying the collegiate option style offense with Tebow running the ball alot than many other HCs/OCs would be ... like John Fox. That they've talked about using Tebow for more than clip-board holding says that they're going to design/introduce plays into the offense for Tebow to run, possibly in anticipation of Tebow eventually starting. I really cannot see a team trading a 4th rounder for a player they plan to use as a WC QB and/or convert to a HB or punt protector. Maybe a 6th or 7th but NOT a 4th.
That was my take on Holmes' "issues" last year. There's nothing like crappy QB play to rile up veteran WRs. The Bills' Eric Moulds went ballistic on the sidelines back in 2005 when he'd just had had enough of JP Losman's inept QBing. These guys will take NOT getting the ball alot if the team is winning, but if the team is struggling, then they want to get the ball every time. It's just the nature of WRs.
Exactly. Tebow was brought here to run the wildcat and provide a short yardage and goal line look. I think Holmes is an under-performing, overpaid diva, but I have no problem with what he said.
Think about the reciving core last year and tell me what has remained the same.. JCO- A pro's pro. A life-long Jet and a great rout running reciever with a GRAT attitude. D-Mase- A pro as well and very vocal, in the twilight of his career. Washed up Plax- Always an issue, everywhere hes been (Mich state, Pitt, NYG) not a crisp rout runner, slow, very good betwee the 20's, dosent show for practice and is snarkey Tone- As Plax, an issue everywhere hes been (OHIO ST, Pitt, and with the Jets) Great natural talent, me first attitude, vocal, plays hard when motivated. This unit last year could have been very good, yet had some major flaws. I think JCO saw the writting on the wall and was too classy to deal with all the potential bull shit (just speculation). The main constant here is, the Jets brought in low charactor guys in Plax and Holmes. Mason, the elder statesman, took issues with this ultimatly getting to the point of being a media distraction. I hope to god this year Holes has grown the fuck up and takes Hill under his wing (although I dont want Hill emulating Holmes). God I miss Bray bray and J-Co, almost as much as Sanchez
I think the Jets want Sanchez to succeed, and they think that pushing him is the best way to do it. Drew Stanton wasn't the guy for that. Whether Sanchez rises to the occasion or crumbles under the pressure, they'll be judged on what happens.
Thank you for answering the over the top criticism of Holmes. I can understand if Holmes had said something bad, or something people had real substantive disagreements with. But it is clear to me the Jet organization sees him as a spokesman for the players. They put him out there in post game pressers. That is the point of noting he is articulate, reasonable and I would even say fairly persuasive. He doesn't come off to me as if he's full of shit like some others. I have no doubt that this is the view of him by the organization. Otherwise they would not introduce him in post game pressers and at other times. As for what he said, it sounded completely reasonable to me. It sounded like he's supportive of Sanchez, and said nothing that contradicts what others who speak for the Jets have said. The haters should really wait until he does something they have a reason to be upset about. Otherwise they are just being played by the media.
Prime example of one line being blown out of proportion again. Holmes is right overall. The media can spin it however they want. The Jets have put the past behind them and are looking to take that big step forward this year. I hope that most Tebow plays are with Mark on the field and special teams.
BB, like I said, I dont have a problem with what Holmes said in this particular situation; or in some others in the past. What I do have an issue with is his inability to take accountability for his actions at the end of last year (and during his other self inflicted situations at Ohio State and Pitt ect...). No matter how talented a guy is, if he can-not "man up" and be that leader (what the Jets want, hence the reason they paid him, put a C on his chest, and run him out infront of the media every week) I dont want him. Look at how others handel themselves. WR specific team leaders who are better then Holmes and far less dramatic and contraversial. 1) A Johnson--Gold standard, even after his fight with Cortland, he still is viewed in higher regards then Holmes...Why, he is a leader and takes the blame on HIS shoulders AND PRODUCES, BLOCKS, Finishes Routes even when the ball is on the other side. 2) FITZ--Same here, vocal leader on and off the field. 3) Jennings-... 4) can name about 5 others, and Santonio is not one of these guys, never will be. Thats ok, but we should stop running him out in front of the media as all he is doing is making the entire team look like a bunch of class-less clowns(Bart does this on occation as well). Give the mic to Sanchez, Ryan, and even Revis before Tone...
