I think Tannenbaum knows his seat is getting hotter. If its at all possible he might go after MJd . I just don't think he should give Jacksonville much in return. what did the Bears get Brandon Marshall for - 2 third round picks? How does that happen? The Patriots routinely get prime players for little or nothing. It's enough that the Jets would have to give him a new contract but also good players and good draft picks - no way.
Depends on the contract MJD wants. I would think we can count on MJD for 2 seasons, at least 1.5. I don't like projecting long-term with older runningbacks. Can we get a contract where we can get out of it after year 3 and be able to improve the team in the meantime? Then it might be worth it. I just hate trading draft picks for other teams' disgruntled players wanting to get paid. Then we pay twice: in picks and in cap. It's part of how we've gotten into this mess. It would be nice if Greene became a top back and we can pay him a reasonable salary and not have to pay extra. On the other hand, if we get a compensatory pick for Greene and don't have to give up a super high pick for MJD, then it helps even it out. MJD would be a perfect fit for this offense. It has Tannenbaum written all over it, so it can't be discounted. I don't expect it, but I'm sure Tanny has called, and we have to be one of the 3-5 teams most likely to get him.
Trade Holmes and have Jax pick up some of the guaranteed money. Trade Tebow, trade a draft pick, trade Kerley, McKnight and whoever else they want. This happens and we make a legit run at a title. MJD is hungry and he has proved he can carry a team behind an offensive line of trash cans.
MJD is not going anywhere for a cap-friendly contract that is easy to get out of after a year or two. He's in one of those right now. He's going to go somewhere where he gets the bulk of the money up front or the deal is guaranteed for 4 or 5 years.
Holmes for MJD sounds good. We can add Ocho/Johnson, Plax,Who's your momma, or whoever gets cut in Seattle T.O or BE......
agreed, but i didn't say high picks. plus, dumping contracts also counts for something. we eat sanchez , but they eat jones-drew.
Holmes is awesome on the sideline. He's even better when he's "captain" and adversity comes his way. Holmes catches 10 passes in a game. Holmes gets upfield. Holmes protects the football. Holmes lays killer blocks to support the ground game. Holmes doesn't talk shit about his teammates to the media and hang them out to dry. Holmes is gets 100yd games all the time. Holmes breaks small plays and turns them into big plays. Holmes is worth all the guaranteed money we gave him bc he has such a strong work ethic, hunger and commitment to the next level. Routine and commitment.
This forum has lost it. If you sewed jim browns torso on barry sanders legs he'd put up marginally better numbers than greene behind this OL. I know madden is coming out soon but this is ridiculous
Ooooh, Frankenback, I like it! Seriously, the Jets do not have what it takes to run the ball consistently this year. They have nobody who is going to be responsible for getting the tough yards, when the hits are coming and the Jets still need to grind it out on the ground. They lost that when Thomas Jones left the team. Shonn Greene is just not that type of workhorse. He's fragile, to put it plainly. Even when he does take the carries he's not a dynamic back at all. He does not make people miss and so he's really dependent on the offensive line to make yards for him. It's not possible for the Jets to go into the season with him as the #1 back behind this line, with this QB and these receivers. He just doesn't have what it takes to prosper in the NFL when all the pressure is on him. If the Jets could fit MJD into the cap and put Greene back in his proper role as change-of-pace back after the main guy has worn the defense down then there's a chance the Jets running game would be solid enough to make the other flaws in the offense not glaring. I'm not using hyperbole when I say that MJD could easily make a 4 or 5 game difference in the Jets record this season. Their offense is so bad right now in all facets of the game that expecting them to win more than 6 or 7 games is lunacy. If they can square away the running game then that opens things up down the field some and it makes the opposing pass rush less effective. They might actually win 10 games against the schedule they'll be facing in the second half even if they start poorly. They probably won't do that, but right now this team looks as bad on offense as any the Jets have put on the field since 2005. Should the Jets make a huge trade for MJD, giving up 1sts and Shonn Greene or something silly like that? Of course not, because they're probably not winning the Super Bowl even if they do get him. But if a reasonable deal can be made, a 2nd rounder and a player or two not named Shonn Greene, then it's probably an excellent deal for them. If the 2012 Jets defense plays like the 2000 Ravens defense they're still short Jamal Lewis at this point to get to the playoffs and then win the Super Bowl. Putting a bad offense out there all season with no saving graces is the quickest way to waste what the Jets have built on defense over the last few seasons. There's no guarantee going forward that the Jets can afford to keep that defense together. It would be a shame to waste what should be one of its best seasons.
Is Thomas Jones available? Id bring him in for a workout. His skills and vet leadership couldnt hurt. MJD has to be on Tannes mind as his savior for this season.
If they can find a way to get one of the best Rbs in the league, last years leading rusher, then they can find a way to make our O line solid and dependable. Please fix the O line.
I still don't think this offensive line as a whole turned went from one of the best in the NFL to one of the worst overnight. It's an average line, but it's not like every top team in the NFL has a fantastic offensive line. It's not like it's a hopeless cause. We may need to find someone who can help out If you improve the talent, it can make the offensive line look better. Just as if you make the offensive line better, it can make lesser talent look better. Right now, every unit on offense is a question mark. There are pieces in place that can make each area play pretty well, but if MJD were here, he'd be a great complement to Greene in a power running game. He can catch the ball, too. Short yardage wouldn't be a problem. He'd be a clear upgrade to an offense that could use a shot in the arm. I think all Jets fans are worried about the offense. It's hard to be a ground and pound team with an average o-line and average running backs. My concern is giving MJD a big contract on top of trading valuable picks. Tannenbaum didn't spend much this offseason, so it's possible he has this bullet left in him. For the right price, I'd be in. If they set it up like the Cromartie trade, where it's a 4th that could be a 3rd if they make the AFC Championship Game and a 2nd if they win the Super Bowl or something, I would be interested in that. I don't want to give up a 3rd or better unless we have to, since we're going to be paying him presumably big money.
On Tuesday, we theorized that the New York Jets could fit as a potential suitor if the Jacksonville Jaguars actively attempted to trade running back Maurice Jones-Drew. Well, let's go ahead and cross Gang Green off the list. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News has the skinny: Jets aren't interested in trading for Maurice Jones-Drew. Price tag (players/draft picks + signing him to new deal) is prohibitive. # nyj â Manish Mehta(@MMehtaNYDN) August 22, 2012 With a dearth of options at running back and a reputation for big splashes, the Jets seemed just crazy enough to make a play here. But as it turns out, the Jets' reasons for passing likely mirror why most teams won't go near Jones-Drew. In today's NFL, a veteran running back simply isn't worth as much as he used to be. Even one as good as MJD. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...ve-for-jets-tastes?module=HP11_headline_stack
^smoke screen. This player has so much value to our defensive strategy. "Crazy" would be to not actively pursue MJD.
It makes more sense to draft a quality RB, but Tannenbaum hasn't been able to get that done either. LeSean McCoy was a 2nd round pick. Shonn Greene is not a #1 RB. He is solid, but has near-zero game-breaking ability, no speed, and can't catch.
