One could argue that he "won" the starting job back and the end of 2010 when he played better than Orton and actually won a game, something that Orton seemed incapable of doing. Then, if you want to go look at the stats of the 2011 preseason, Tebow's were better than both Orton's and Quinn's. All that aside, something that guys like you can never take away, and never discount, is that he took over a lousy team, went on a 6-1 run, ended up the year being 8-5 with a playoff appearance AND a playoff victory, AS THE STARTING QB on an NFL team.
You can say that about Sanchez, and many other QB1s. Sanchez didn't earn the starting job. You have guys like Brady who earned it. Tebow got the job because Orton was playing badly, but not before he actually earned the job previously. How can you earn the job unless there is a declared QB competition? Most guys have it handed to them. Tebow actually earned the starting job after his rookie season, then when they couldn't trade Orton, the new coach took it away from him. It turned out to be a poor decision on Fox's part, evidenced by the fact that he had to give the job right back to Tebow. End result, playoff win after a 1-4 start. Denver's defense was ranked 22nd or so, so don't give me the whole defense won the games spiel.
Let me get this right? He beat out Orton for the job? but since they couldn't trade Orton they gave him the job back?
This is the thing with me. I really want Sanchez to light it up thos year. I want him to turn that corner like Eli did. I have a soft spot for Sanchez. But Tebow is so much fun to watch like spmeone mentioned. He has unpredictability!
That's what happened. They tried to trade Orton. When the deal fell through, they opened up the QB competition and Orton outplayed Tebow in practice.
He earned it the last three games he played the year prior (2010). They gave him the last three starts and he played well enough to remain the starter. So much so, that Orton was on the trading block, but there were no takers. I didn't see the practices, but apparently Orton looked much better than Tebow to the coaches and they gave Orton back his job based on practices, even though Tebow outperformed him in the Pre-season.
