Greene, Powell, McKnight & Conner. Ground and Pound with these guys? In my opinion it's going to be crucial to add a big 4th back. Did they cut someone interesting? Anyone we can trade for? Maybe a vet (after wk 1 so the contract isn't guaranteed)? Sucks for Ganaway, I'm sure he'll be offered a spot on the PS. Apparently we can't scout for shit when it comes to RBs (Greene is probably the last NFL caliber back we brought in). Some interesting names: Jacob Hester (FR/RB) -> Got cut by the Chargers. Is he injured or something? Could be very useful. Chris Ivory -> I'd love to trade something for him. After all it seems like we are not that good at using later rd picks anyways. Tauren Poole -> Wouldn't mind giving him a shot. Cut by the Panthers. Ryan Grant -> Vet option. Could be brought in after wk 1 if our running game falters against the Bills. Tim Hightower -> Can he stay helathy?
I agree that for a team that wants to focus on the running game, not having a really good RB corps is a bit of an obvious flaw in the plan.
Yes, and his name is D.J. Ware, cut by the Giants, someone who the Jets never should've let go in the first place years ago.
The Jets are ok at finding roleplayers at RB in the later rounds. They're no good at finding real talent though. They haven't drafted a really good starting runningback in the Bradway/Tannenbaum era. 2001 - LaMont Jordan [2nd] 2004 - Derrick Ward [7th] 2005 - Cedric Houston [5th] 2006 - Leon Washington [4th] 2009 - Shonne Greene [3rd] 2010 - Joe McKnight [4th] 2011 - Bilal Powell [5th] 2012 - Terence Ganaway [6th] Given the nature of the position it's not unusual to luck into a guy who can give you a few 1,000 yard seasons in his prime. Of all the guys listed above only three thousand yard seasons for anybody over the course of more than a decade. It's like the long dry spell between Freeman McNeill and Adrian Murrell.
If you expect the 5th-7th rd pick to become a "really good" rb than you are living in a fantasy land. in 2011 only 6 Rbs ran for 1000 yds had 6+Tds and >3 fumbles. Shonne Greene was one of them. Greene was the 3rd best 3rd yr RB in the NFL in 2011. Shonne Greene is a productive dependable NFL back and hopefully he can continue to improve this year along w/the OL.
Ok, I give. You're right. Shonn Greene was better than MJD last year because MJD fumbled 3 times in his 343 carries to Greene's 1 in 253. You got me. I admit it. Greene is on the same plane as MJD. Oh, oh, damn. I see. You're right again. Shonn Greene was a better back than Michael Turner last year because Turner fumbled 3 times. How could I not have seen that? Ah, this is hard. You're right. I'd much rather have had Greene than Arian Foster last year despite the fact that Foster gained 200 yards more than Greene in 3 fewer starts and scored 12 TD's. Those 2 fumbles he lost were the killer. It's clear at this point that having the RB who finished 13th in the overall rushing stats was a huge benefit to the Jets. How could I not have seen that?
Don't be surprised if we drop the terminator, and pick up an above listed RB. Why do you guys think Bellore has been taking reps at FB
You claimed that he wasn't "really good". I showed that he is one of the better RBs in the NFL in 2011. Racks up the yards, gets in the end zone and doesn't fumble. Those are the characteristics of a really good RB. Those are the facts. If you can't handle the facts and simply want to be a Greene hater despite his productivity, thats up to you. Its a free country you're free to be wrong and hate good players on your own team if that's your thing.
Shonne Greene isn't really good. He's average at best as a runningback and below average as a wide receiver and blocker. He's the single biggest reason the Jets running game is average at this point.
To be fair, Jordan was blocked from starting by Curtis, by the time he went to the Raiders he had a major injury. I haven't been impressed with the Mcknight/Powell picks so far.
"Really Good"? As in better than good but not quite great? You think he's "really good"? Greene is best described as "average" or "solid", but he's not "really good" unless you have low standards.
He looked pretty good when Faneca and Woody were on the line. I would agree he is about average. He's pretty bad as a receiver out of the backfield. RBs that don't really catch the ball are a dying breed. Other than Turner in Atlanta I can't think of another one off the top of my head.
The Statistics demonstrate that Shonne Greene was one of the better RBs in the NFL last season. hilarious that some want to hate this guy. LOL SG has consistently improved each season and hopefully he will flourish under Sparano....and the darksiders will still claim he's not good. Being one of the top RBs in the NFL and the 3rd best 3rd yr RB in the NFL is certainly good. He is continuing to improve as a RB especially now that Schotty is gone. If you want to proclaim that Greene is a failure thats up to you. I think he is going to have his best season this season.
I like Greene and think he can carry at least the majority of the load IF he can stay healthy. He's not an elite talent by any means but certainly good enough to get the job done if all else goes well. What scares me is that Greene has been injury prone and all we have behind him is McKnight and Powell. McKnight has been awesome on STs but as a RB he's been very unimpressive. Powell's been even less impressive and neither guy has the size and power to be the bruising back that this offense seems to need. All this gives me the feeling that the "Tebow package" is bound to play a large role in the offense this year because our ground game is looking pretty weak on paper.
