I'm certain, like all head coaches, Rex has some input into personnel decisions. Rex certainly can choose not to start a player, like Hunter, if he feels he's a liability. Tannenbaum, for the most part, has done an egregiously poor job of drafting and signing free agents the last four years. All Rex can do is coach the players he's given; but the problem for Rex the last two seasons has been that they don't appear to be particularly well coached. I would even go as far as to say that Mangini's teams, by comparison, were better coached than these 2011 and 2012 Jets teams.
It's foolish to think that a GM, HC, OC and DC don't work together with the GM having the final say. Tannenbaum doesnt go from drafting a solid core with Mangini at his side and now whiffing in the draft with Rex by his side. The common denominator is the GM so you have to think that Rex's input has been less then stellar. Spending big to win now, each season having to restructure contracts to get under the cap, signing a ridiculous extension to Sanchez to ease the cap and poor drafting has the Jets in this position now. GM and HC both have a hand in what is on the roster while the GM is reposnsible to make sure he can afford the personnel they want. Having only 36 guys signed next year that have a total of 140 mil against the cap is the GMs fault. Just my opinion but the Jets need to start over and the only way to do it successfully is by firing the front office and coaching staff and bringing in a guy that will put his people in place and hire the coach he wants to work with. Names like Cowher or Gruden will surface but both want total control or you can look at the successful franchises and hire and up and coming exec as your GM. This also will entail gutting the roster. Or you can continue applying band aids to a gaping wound and it will continue on until they finally rebuild it. Honestly, I think Rex and MT will get bailed out because of the injury issues. It's tough to fire guys 2 years removed from 2 playoff runs and having a winning record over 4 years that have had injuries to key personnel. A lot can happen between now and week 17. No reason the Jets can't win 7-8 games which right now would have to be considered successful and should keep everyone in place.
I thought the Jets made a mistake firing him. He helped Tannenbaum put together a nice roster and you didn't have all this sideshow stuff happening. If Mangini and Tannenbaum had found a franchise QB, we wouldn't be talking about this.
I expect to be discounted by Jets fan veterans because I'm a 3/12er but, some of us 3/12ers may have a perspective on the OP's observations that may have value. The following is mine. Obviously most 3/12er's focus has been on Tim and HOW the Jets use him, which 'goes straight to HC and OC decisions so, per the OP's direction, my comment is HC specific. 'WHY' is our (3/12ers) prevailing question about Rex's decisions. Many Jets vets. have been helpful (cough cough) in offering answers to 'WHY' Rex has decided to use Tim the way he has, but the answer to this 'WHY' may be at the foundation of evaluating Rex's weaknesses. Rex's main strength is defense, possibly to the degree Rex minimizes the value of the offense. If that is the case then that explains 'WHY' a 'less than elite' QB is paid like an elite QB, 'WHY' Rex accepts weak QB performances, 'WHY' minimum attention is paid to having an elite OL (Hunter), and 'WHY' offensive weapons are not used as creatively and efficiently as many other teams use theirs. In other words, Rex may believe a top 5 defense is the key to paradise (winning games) as long as the offense or the special teams score a few points. IMO, that's not a winning philosophy.
So you're saying that you miss having Mangini as our HC?? Hasn't the fact that he spent three seasons with the Jets (only managing a 10-6 & 9-7 season...leaving aside his 4-12 season lol), then went to the Browns and posted 2 back to back 5-11 seasons as the Browns HC enough of a pill to swallow to say this HC would not have been our answer? Lets be real here.
Wasn't he working with Tannenbaum when Keller, Harris, Mangold, Ferguson, Revis, etc were drafted? Wasn't Farve forced on him by the owner then fired when he couldn't make it work? I know most Jets fans hated him but he is partially responsible for bringing in alot of the talent that is slowly dwindling.
Ok, so in that case, bring him in as the GM? Just because you can scout talent well doesn't mean that you meet the prerequisites for being a good HC. I hated Mangini. HATED. I don't care that he gave us a 10-6 record. I know most people are sick of Rex Ryan's schtick. I am starting to grow weary of it. But who else would you rather have? Name some potential current Offensive/Defensive Coordinators you think would bring more to the table. Personally, Mike Tannenbaum has to go. Not Rex.
I think the only time there would NOT be a HC change when a new GM comes in would be when the current GM retires/moves up the exec food chain and the organization promotes from within. I think that Pittsburgh may have done this (they've only had 3 HCs in the last 40+ years!). I think that Indy may have done this as well when Bill Polian took an VP position and his son, Chris, became their GM. Tom Caldwell remained the HC under both. If the GM gets fired, the HC isn't far behind. Tom Caldwell won more playoff games than Ryan and actually got his team to the Super Bowl in 2008, and he was sent packing along with the Polians after 1 terrible season. Ryan's coaching towards the end of 2011 was suspect. It remains suspect in 2012. If the Jets get a new GM, Ryan is gone. He may very well be gone even if they don't get a new GM. QFT. I think that the Jets' failure to acquire talent, especially in the draft, since Ryan has been HC says that he has significant input into player evaluation. I think that when you have a GM who does NOT have a background in scouting, player evaluation, etc, the HC will always have much more influence in player select than if the GM has first-hand experience evaluating football talent.
First, I don't think you realize I am not a Jets fan so whoever the Jets hire means nothing to me. Second, there are very very few instances where a GM is replaced from outside the organization who then doesnt bring his own coach. Of course there are exceptions but with the way this team is spiraling downward, I would be amazed if Rex stays and Tannenbaum goes. Third, the talent was acquired under Mangini's watch and has diminished under Rex. There are several reasons but Rex has his hand in it and should be held partially responsible. Fourth, to me it is very evident that Rex has lost this team. They don't have the same swagger his first two years. Why? Could be numerous things but some that stand out: Rex crying in the locker room. Rex and his foot fetish/cuckold desirtes. Rex admitting to losing the locker room last year. It's hard to respect a guy you are going into battle with him as a leader having these charecteristics. Think about how much Rex is ridiculed outside the team about these incidents. You think those guys in that locker room don't have that on their mind? Guarantee when all these stories broke, no fan in here believed it and all defended him. Now they are ridiculing him as well. The Jets need to start over by replacing the front office, coaching staff and gutting the team or this circus atmosphere in the media and around the league will continue.
you can't look at the similarities if you want to make a valid argument, you have to identify if there are differences between situations. if there are differences, the scenarios aren't comparable. Rex Ryan won 4 road playoff games in two seasons, upsetting one 13 and one 14 game winning team. the general perception, and I believe accurate perception, is that Rex Ryan was directly responsible for those wins. a new GM would recognize this and believe getting Ryan better players would lead to a return of this type of success. Caldwell coached the Colts to the Super Bowl, but that accomplishment is generally, and fairly, attributed not to him but Peyton Manning. two seasons later, without Peyton Manning, he only won 2 games. so a new GM, understanding this, realizes he doesn't have Manning so he doesn't need Caldwell. see the gaping difference between those two scenarios? you can't simply stop at playoff success and think the scenarios are even remotely similar. when you ignore the differences you make bad arguments.
I think you can bring in a new GM and leave the HC in place, at least for the first year. Woody as owner makes those decisions, and I think he would elect to keep Rex, and any new GM coming in would have to understand that. I agree that Rex deserves at least partial blame for the lack of talent, but it's mostly Tanny's fault. If you think Rex gets his way with personnel decisions just go back and look at Hard Knocks. When push came to shove and Rex wanted to keep Danny Woodhead what happened? Tranny overrode him and cut Woodhead. And look where he's at now. I would like to see at least one more year of Rex without Tanny. Only then can you make an accurate evaluation of Rex.
What do you mean by point a finger? What are you going to do, demote him to defensive coordinator? Playing the blame game is fruitless. Either fire him and move on, or accept losing ways. Rex is never gonna change.
Do u see Rex as a former Coach when u watch in your crystal ball for the end of the season? And if "yes" - who could turn around the steering wheel? Gruden`? Cower? anyone else?
Rex Ryan seems to me the kind of coach that works for a while with his bombastic attitude, then I would guess people just tune him out. Maybe the players have reached that point.
I support Rex. But I do think he needs to stop being so nice. When you jerk off and lose 30some to 0 . You deserve punishment, this is not backyard football. I hope he rips these guys a new hole when they get back in today. These guys are taking my money to fuck around on the field!!!!!!!!! But, generally I get the impression that he tries too hard not to hurt feelings
