You mean like we defended against it last Sunday? Why do you keep insisting that Sanchez is an emo crybaby?
Pretty unbelievable that Sanchez can rank #30 in passer rating, #32 in completion percentage, #29 in yards per attempt, #26 in yards per game, and #10 in INTs, but somehow there are still people that think the solution is to cut the back-up QB for his 2 unsuccessful plays per game. It's just delusion at this point. The guy is terrible. It is not an exaggeration to say that he has been the worst starting QB in the NFL to this point. It has nothing to do with Tebow. Anyway, to answer the OP, I still think the season is salvageable -- but it's not going to be easy. We need an established receiver badly now that Holmes is done. Doesn't need to be a star, but somebody that can consistently be an option in the passing game. Need more Joe McKnight, less Shonn Greene, and much more creative use of the Wildcat. And most of all, we need a different QB. Either insert Tebow or trade for a better game manager that will put up the same type of efficiency as Sanchez without turning the ball over as often. This team is dead on arrival with Sanchez. He doesn't produce and he manages to turn it over at the worst possible times.
The ZOMG SEASON OVER nonsense is stupid at this point. 25% of the season is over. Exactly four teams in the AFC have a better record than us. None in our division. Four teams in the AFC have the same 2-2 record. Half are worse off than us. The two games we have lost were to two of the stronger teams on our schedule. We're about to play a third. Ok, we'll probably come out 2-3 Monday night. Still no reason to panic. Sure, the team looked horrible Sunday and looked off the two Sundays before. I guess I don't understand the benefit of all the agony and gnashing of the teeth and cries to kill Sanchez or see if Schotty will come back with 75% of the season ahead of us. There's still a lot of time to see some upside out of all these young players we have playing in a new offensive system. No reason to be miserable every Sunday until February until we're out officially.
By winning eight more games and making the playoffs. I suppose that means they'll actually have to stop the run once in a while.
That's how I feel about it in a nutshell. Coples should be getting much more playing time. Hill, when he's back, should be getting much more playing time. So should Powell, Davis, Ellis and anyone else that can add a spark to the offense or speed to the defense. I realize that on paper the Jets are in pretty good shape, but as inept, slow and unexplosive as they've looked they have to do something to put some life into this team before it's too late.
I actually think Tebow was a phenomenal move, even if by mistake. It has nothing to do with his production or lack thereof on the field. If nothing else, he's going to eventually lead to the ouster of Mark Sanchez, which is a necessary step for this franchise. There's finally an impetus to actually bench Sanchez when he plays awful football for extended periods of time.
Nice post Jetfanmack. The sky isn't falling yet and the Jets clearly have options. This is what I think they can do. Offense 1. Get Tebow on the field as much as they can without taking Sanchez off the field. Like it or not those are the two best skill players left to the Jets at this point and they do not have the luxury of keeping one of them off the field because they're both QB's. For this season at least Tebow is an H-back/WC QB for the best possible reason: the Jets are a better team with him on the field in that role than with him on the sidelines watching the action. He'll understand this and he'll go along with it regardless of what his desires are. He is a team player and he wants to win. That's just how it will go. 2. Stop with the spread WR sets. The Jets talent right now is not at WR. There is no good reason for them to have their 3rd WR on the field over Tebow or Cumberland. If the Jets stay big with 2 TE's and Tebow on the field they might just be able to run the ball effectively, especially if Tebow is in the backfield and the other team never knows if he's getting a direct snap or not. Ok, now and then they will have to go with 3 WR's but they shouldn't line up that way except in passing situations where they have no choice. It's not like the Jets ever run out of a 3 WR formation anyway. They're not fooling anybody when they have 3 WR's on the field. That's a pass 90%+ of the time. 3. Use Bilal Powell more often than they have been so far. He's got qualities that Greene does not, among them the ability to run to the weak side without getting stuffed immediately. No, he's not clearly better than Greene and you don't take away a starter's job on a whim but his carries should be going way up. Green 15/Powell 10/Tebow 5 sounds really good to me right about now. Maybe Grimes can add in somehow. McKnight obviously can't because the Jets run game has been weak for more than a year and he cannot get on the field despite that and we all hold our breath when he does get the ball due to the fumble possibility. 4. Look hard at the guards again. The Jets are getting absolutely stuffed in the middle of the field and that's not Mangold. Maybe Ducasse should get some reps at RG and let Moore try LG. When something is not working you move guys around and see if you can make it better. 5. Do the Steeler thing on offense until things settle down. Throw 60/40 on 1st Down and run 60/40 on 2nd no matter what happens on 1st. You get some 3 and outs that way but you also suppress the pass rush some. 3rdand15draw wouldn't like hearing this but the Jets could do with some more trap/draw action in obvious passing situations. Yes, it will cause disquiet among the fans but we're looking for basic competence here and not throwing the ball on long 3rd downs all the time keeps the clock moving and cuts down on turnovers. Defense 6. The Jets should be in a 4-3 at this point. The personnel says 4-3 because the LB's the Jets have cannot cut it in a 3-4 any more. The personnel says 4-3 because there's no way on earth the Jets should not have Wilkerson/Coples and Ellis on the field as often as they can manage it right now. Let Pouha and Devito fight for snaps and the guy playing better gets on the field. That's not Rex's way but I don't want to see 2500 yards allowed on the ground this year and that's where the Jets are headed doing what they are doing. The LB's getting on the field should be Harris, Pace and probably McIntyre with Davis getting some looks as a nickel backer. Yeah that means Bart Scott and Aaron Maybin are not on the field much. That's appropriate given the flaws they add to the defense. The Jets need a front 7 that is fairly stable and not always switching guys out like a fire drill. Pouha, Scott, Maybin and to a lesser extent Devito are the primary reasons the Jets have to do as much switching as they do. Enough. Rex likes his vets but even he has to see that this defense is bad at this point and his vets in the front 7 are the main reason. 7. The defensive backfield needs pressure put on the QB. That means the Jets need to blitz more with the LB's and they need to have their best pass rushers on the field in the normal set. General Stuff 8. Rex needs to get rid of his mopey, sad face. He doesn't need to be bouncing around yelling Super Bowl all the time but the team does take queues from him and he is going to lose the team very quickly if he doesn't stop feeling sorry for himself. He lost Revis for the season. He needs to get over it and make the changes necessary to give the other guys a shot at being a good defense. 9. Woody Johnson needs to take a big step back from visibility and let everything else happen. He's going to have a lot of decisions to make at the end of the season and the worst ones for him will be ones caused by him getting too involved right now. That hint of "I might want Tebow in there" was the worst thing he could possibly have done at this point in the season. Even allowing himself to be in an interview where that could be misquoted/misinterpreted/outright lied about was bad. He's the boss and when people start putting words in the bosses mouth and imputing his motives it has huge ripple effects all the way down the chain. There's going to come a time really soon when he's going to have to make big decisions. He doesn't want to be creating issues bigger than the ones he already has on his plate.
Way too many injuries to crucial players to salvage this season. Let the younger players get experience, fire tannenbaum (reports of him overriding who his scouts tell him to draft), draft well and go from there.
Yo say that we basically never run from 3 WR sets, so let's stop using them ? Let's run through the math. 5 guys on the Oline + 1 QB and 1RB makes 7. 2 TE's make 9. Add in an extra RB/FB makes 10. OK, let's add just 1 WR. Defense puts their best cover corner on our 1 WR and they still have 10 men left in the box against our 10. QB doesn't count so that's 10 against 9. If we put 3 WRs out, taht moves 3 defenders out of the box at minimum. Say we put a nice, tall, speedy WR out on each side with Kerley in the slot. Think defenses are going to cover Kerley, Hill/Hill, and Schillens with single coverage ? They'd definitely drop at least 1 safety if not more. Again, moving men out of the box. Funny thing about the running game is that if the defenders aren't there, you don't have to block them. That being the case, why not go 3 WR formations on every running play ? One flaw here is that you are relying on the Coaching Staff's apparent assessment of Powell and other RBs. Remember, this is the same coaching staff that all through preseason, thought Hunter was a better RT than Howard.
I always feel having Tebow on the field with Sanchez is very odd, but we might not have a choice at this point. I do think Tebow's skills are less useful without SOME threat of a pass, and right now, the Jets are afraid to let him throw to ignite the QB controversy. I agree Tebow would go along with it for this year. But I don't want to have them both on the field a ton because that ruins the whole point of having Tebow out there. We may not have many other options though. The problem is we have WRs who have terrible technique getting off the line. They all can make plays once they're downfield, but that hasn't been happening a ton, and Sanchez isn't finding them when they are open. If we go 3 wides, we need to run more out of it. That's where the draws should be more successful if the defense is more spread out. I've always been a fan of throwing on 1st down, the problem is Sanchez throws such a low completion percentage that it doesn't keep the offense on schedule as often as it needs to be. Hopefully, throwing on 1st down, short passes to guys like Keller and Kerley and Powell can help. I'm also fine with more 2 tight end sets with Keller. Cumberland can't block too well, but with him and Keller in the game, we have 2 tight ends who can make plays in the passing game. He might be better than Greene. You can't clearly say anything at this point because Powell has proven nothing, but Greene has shown he's not that great. At the very least, platoon him more and get the other backs some carries. This offense has needed a spark in a running game ever since Leon got hurt. I don't know if we have that guy on the roster, but you don't know til you try. It's a shame about McKnight, but I still think we need to get him a couple touches. Ducasse has been rotating series with Slauson almost all year. Ducasse has done a pretty decent job. I might start to rotate Moore out of that rotation, too, he hasn't been up to his normal standards in two seasons now. Jets have way too much money invested in ILB. My main issue with the 4-3 is that it relies on line backers with speed. If our LBs are slow in a 3-4, just imagine them in a 4-3. It will be a disaster. Davis and McIntyre would almost have to both be on the field. Scott hasn't been bad this year. It's something to try, but I'm not sure we have the speed at LB to pull it off unless Rex got creative. Yep. In 2009, the Jets got a ton of pressure from the DBs like Coleman and Smith. I wonder if Aaron Berry can be a blitzer. The Jets made a secondary with Revis, Sheppard, Coleman and Lowery into a dominant pass defense. Cromartie isn't Revis, but Rex has done well before. We'll see this weekend how the team responds. This is a big week to see if this team is holding it together or not. Yep. The Woody hate I've seen lately has been at its highest since the stadium was built. A lot of it has been justified.
The point of a 4-3 in terms of the linebackers is it gets the slowest ones off the field. I agree that Davis would need more field time and Pace might well wind up with his hand on the ground more often than standing up.
We lost to a 1-2 Pittsburgh team and got absolutely dismantled 34-0 at home against a San Francisco coming off a loss to the Vikings. On the other hand, our two wins came against teams that have been division doormats over the greater part of the past decade, and it took two fortunate missed field goals for us to beat one of them. We could easily be 1-3 right now -- the only reason we are not had nothing to do with us. The kicker just missed. In addition to that, we have lost our best defensive player AND our best offensive player in the past two weeks, our quarterback is statistically the worst in the NFL through 4 games, our running game is ineffective, and we're going into a Monday Night Football game against what might be the best team in the AFC. There's plenty of reason to worry. It's not just craziness.
I don't see the point of leaving Tebow on the field with Sanchez. In that scenario, Tebow isn't a threat to act as the QB. Sanchez can't block, act as a receiver, or act as a running back. If we snapped the ball to Tebow, we'd be playing 10-on-11. And if we snap the ball to Sanchez, Tebow would essentially be playing either WR, TE, RB, or FB -- and he's worse at that than any true NFL WR, TE, RB, or FB.
yes.. but tebow would be playing wr, te, rb AND fb all at the same time! then we'd be playing 14 + jesus vs. 11.
I have a gut feeling we are going to see the Jets team we been waiting on this season. Every since Rex took over and everybody left us for dead the next game we came out with a chip on our shoulder.
It affects defensive substitutions, especially if you go with no huddle. Splitting Sanchez out wide takes a defender with him. That gives you 10 on 10 football. If team gets caught with heavy Run stopping D (linebackers), put Sanchez in the shotgun. If teams come out with pass package (nickel/dime DBs), go with Tebow in the gun.
