Manziel is not draft eligible in 2014. He was a true freshman this year. He'll be a junior during the Texas A&M 2014 season and he'll most likely be in the 2015 draft. Bridgewater was a sophomore this year and he'll be draft eligible in 2014. I expect he'll enter the draft that year. Edited: was pointed out in another thread that Manziel was a red-shirt freshman this year and so is eligibile as a red-shirt sophomore after 2013 season. I'm guessing he doesn't go into the draft in that situation but you never know. Not sure he'd want to enter against a red-shirt junior Teddy Bridgewater.
IMO it shouldn't be about the record next season. It should be about Rex showing and proving that he's a head coach, not a defensive coordinator or a clown.
Maziel = Redshirt freshman Bridgewater = True sophomore Wouldn't surprise me at all to see them both leave after next year. It's really risky to stay a year you don't have to if you're a top QB pick. Just look at Jake Locker or Matt Barkley, both of whom's draft stock dropped dramatically. Of course, they could stay, but there is legitimate reason to leave.
BINGO! I had the same thought exactly. On one hand, most agree that QB/WRs/RB/cap situation can't be fixed next year, effectively making 2013 a rebuilding year, whether or not Jets admit it. On the other hand, the same people making getting into the PO the focal point for HC. Smells like knowingly setting up RR for failure. In short: Ryan should be fired unless he will demonstrate ability to do miracles.
 at people voting 12-4 as if he'll be fired at 11-5 or 10-6 in a rebuilding year. Just wow. People just love to embrace the hate, logic be damned!
I buy that. If the team shows they are heading in the right direction but finish 8-8 and out of the playoffs, he could still be back. If they look like they did this year and finish 10-6, he could still be out. Could be more about the feel of the team.
depends. eight-and-eight is fine if they're battling injuries and win three of their last four. but if they start six-and-three and limp to the finish line, eight-and-eight doesn't cut it. i guess what i'm saying is, it depends...mainly on how they finish. but it's just too simplistic to make it about reaching a certain number. though, if you want to boil it down to a single number, i'd say 10 wins guarantees he comes back, even if they lose their last six after a ten-ano-oh start.
10-6 and a wild card should do it. Unless Rex gets a tattoo of Woody wearing only a Sanchez jersey. If he does, he can go 0-16 and still keep his job.
the question is "what record does he need to keep his job?" - I don't think anyone thinks he will keep his job if we got 5-11 or worse.
The playoffs isn't an unreasonable goal given an offseason to re-tool, and most importantly, try and find a competent starting NFL quarterback.
Truthfully I think we'll be worse next year than this year, 5-11. If Rex flips that record he'll stay.
I think you are over-emphasizing the term "re-tool" here, and perhaps, I used a poor phrase. What I mean is, if the Jets added a few pieces through the draft, remained relatively healthy (as compared to the shitfest that was this season's litany of injuries), and added a competent quarterback (he doesn't have to be great, or heck, even good, just serviceable - in other words, someone who isn't going to commit game-changing turnover after game-changing turnover), it isn't inconceivable to think we could win 9 games and sneak into the playoffs as a wildcard. Of course, this magic quarterback would have to be some extremely low-risk, unexciting veteran who we sign on the cheap and get lucky with (Matt Moore? Someone nondescript like that). The point is, a lot can happen in one off-season with some luck.
I really don't think there is any chance Rex will be back in 2014. I think he needs to make the playoffs and that just simply is not going to happen, this team is to devoid of talent to upgrade enough in 1 off season. You simply cannot address - RB, QB, WR, TE, 2 OL, 3 LB's and Safety in one offseason when your hands are tied because of the salary cap and some really bad contract decisions.
The record doesn't matter, it we miss the playoffs a third year in a row, our new GM will be finding a new HC.
we're a 2-14 team right now no pass rush no line no QB no RB no TE no safety lets wait to see who Rex has to work with next year
You have 3 major IFs there + a "may be" + "some luck"... Is it really fair to stake a man's job on so much uncertainty?
He's a great coach and we are lucky to have him. Other teams would give their left nut to get him. The record doesn't matter.
1st, sarcasm is a poor choice when making an argument -- it shows you have no real points. 2nd, you gotta show me one post that says something even close to support this sarcasm. IMO, it should be up to new GM what to do with Rex. I like him personally, but if the new guy decides that it's better for organization to get a new HC -- so be it. I root for the laundry, not a person. As far as this particular thread is concerned, you cannot make getting into the PO next year the measuring stick to keep RR, not with numerous holes Jets have everywhere and bad cap situation.
