As sarcastic as I was being when I wrote that, I am sticking by it because I am certain that a great portion of this message board members feel that way. The record doesn't matter, Rex Ryan took the Jets to back to back AFCCG and made them relevant. Next years record doesn't matter to them, when deciding on Rex Ryan's term. Rex wants 15 years, that's good enough.
I voted 10-6, but it is more about how the team (and Rex) carries itself and how well they play. The roster also factors in. If they end up starting a rookie QB, then 8-8 or 9-7 may be acceptable. If they are playing gutty and everyone is behaving themselves, I could see Rex getting another year. For me, I just want to see some reason to have hope. This season was a disaster. Honestly, it is amazing they won 6 games.
Good point. The other one is it depends in large measure on how much the Jets pursue a rebuilding strategy v. a patchwork approach. That could and likely would also affect the overall record, Ryan's contribution or lack thereof aside. But yeah, the main point is how well Ryan does with the strategy, the success of draft picks and other roster moves, and injuries. I would suggest this poll would be far more suitable just before Opening Day than right now.

That's a fair assessment. Team has to show improvement in a number of areas, most notably offense. They also have to show more gutty and disciplined play. If they can do this, 9-7 or 8-8 might be acceptable. A losing record likely means a change regardless, whether that is the right thing or not.
7-9 and up would be an improvement technically, but I want to see offensive improvement, defense stability (top 10) and ST improvement. If it ends up being losing record, but close games, the thought of keeping him should be entertained. If we spiral to a 3-13 record, obviously gone. If we make the playoffs convincingly, obviously stay
In response to the bolded, I completely agree. A lot has to go right for the Jets to immediately improve by 3-4 games with a tougher schedule and so many uncertainties. Having said that, I think it's more than fair for Rex's job to be on the line. We have drastically regressed over the past two seasons and Rex deserves his fair share of blame for that. Personally, I wouldn't have fired Tanny. I would have brought him back for one more season, and if we failed again next year, I would have cleaned house (new GM, new coaching staff). As a result, I don't love the fact that Rex is coming back under such circumstances (some might call it "Lame duck" status, although I don't necessarily think that terminology applies in this situation), but it is what it is. Rex has to have success next year if he wants to keep his job.
This I agree with 100%. After today's presser, you get the feeling that Rex could get caught banging his wife at halftime on the 50yard line and Woody wouldn't mind one bit. The Owner is in love with Rex and that's all that matters. The record won't matter. The performance of the team won't matter. The Jets belong to Woody Johnson, not the fans and so, I revise my estimate. Rex could go 2-14 and still get an extension. That's just how bad it really, really, is...
It's so painful and sad, but ultimately I feel this is the truth. I can't believe what I heard today at the presser. Despite the past 2 seasons of regression, locker room disarray and circus atmosphere, it appears Rex has actually gained a stronger foothold within the organization. Mind boggling.
These are the New York Jets we're talking about here. Like the young'uns used to say: "That's how they roll.."
I see spike year - if you see 10 guys making 100M, you should see it coming too. Which means - it would be a miracle if Jets do better than 3-13. Hence the reason I voted for 8-8. (6-10 could suffice but then you don't get a praise for grade less than 50%, do you?)

It's only sad because you have lost complete faith in, Rex. Woody sees what a lot of us fans see as well, a damn good thing for this team. The guy has already proven to be successful for this team, keeping him on and building on that continuity is important towards being contenders year in and year out. If you truly believe Rex can do no wrong, you are mistaken. It's not about blind loyality to Rex, it has way more to do with the fact that Woody actually believes in Rex. He believes that he will be the guy to win this team it's first Super Bowl in 44 years. I believe it as well.
Based on what? New Gm forced to keep an undisciplined farce of a head coach, worst starting QB in the NFL, another new OC, salary cap issues and a clown owner. More likely to get worse by 4 games than to improve by 4 games. IMO
