I think the jury came back a long time ago with a verdict on that one. I agree, however, that it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I really don't want to see a restructuring that spreads costs out into future years and keeps this pos on the team for any longer than necessary. I wanted him to go after the 2011 season but I understand cap ramifications have to come into play. But really, wtf kind of contract is it that has a $12.5 million cap hit in just the third year?
yeh i never bothered to worry about contracts cause tanny seemed like he knew what he was doing, but the last couple years have gotten worse and worse... its unbelievable how bad some of the contracts he gave out were.
This makes me nervous more than anything, we can cut him next off-season along with Sanchez and create a crap-ton of cap-space. If he's not in the team's future plans, better off keeping the salary he has now right? No point in guaranteeing money next year or anything like that.
yes this will be interesting and the jets may try to force it but i am not sure how much leverage they have - strictly personnel wise. me thinks they would have bigger balls if hill showed a bit more last year. kerley will be as good as the QB throwing the ball to him. so unless we snag one of the WR's this april i think holmes is on the team and tweak the pact a bit.
Seems like more and more our roster will be made up of disgruntled vets forced to take pay cuts and pimple faced college kids who never played a down in the NFL...should make for a very interesting season!
I would wait until the first two weeks of FA is over and then I'd ask him to take a 2 million cut. The Jets should use every bit of leverage they have.
I think the philosophy should be that we look at 2013 as a season to get better roster wise, and 2014 should be a season where it starts to translate in the standings. By this I mean, whatever hits we have to take to clean up the locker room, and cleanse ourselves of bad contracts, do it now, start building through the draft, and pick up some valuble cap space for 2014, where we can sprinkle in some solid FA's and push this team to where we are competitive for years to come.
First of all, this is where it all starts: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/je...-to-terms-on-five-year-contract-with-the-jets Reportedly, Santonio signed for 50M contract for 5 years - that is, 10M/yr. The catch is, Santonio played out the 2011 season at $2.45M. This simply means, Jets did not intend to show him all the money they promised. (50M for 5 years, but 7M is added to the later 4 years. My suspicion is that it is another back loaded contract.) Of course, 10M/yr for a WR of Santonio's calibre is a gross overpaying, no matter how you slice it, but then making a huge portion of the salary 'guaranteed' is the real stroke of a genius. If Jets wanted to drop Santonio at the contract year, they should have pushed more money to the later years, making him play at some 3.5M/yr for first four years. (But then, that tactic won't work, since Jets paid 24M in signing bonus at the start of the contract. Jesus. That whizboy sure knows how to work contracts. Even if Jets had Santonio playing for 3M - 1M bonus, 2M salary - for first four years, then drop him at the tail end, the remaining 20M will come back to bite them in their collective ass once they drop him.) Back to the topic: Currently, Jets are on the book for some $12.50M for Santonio's contract - of which $7.25M are guaranteed. His base salary is $11M, and bonus clauses account for the remaining $1.5M As such, if Jets cut him now, dead money is at some 11M, with cap saving of some 1.2M or so. Now, that 11M base salary is the money Santonio would see if he is still on the Jets roster by the new fiscal year. (I think that coincides with FA period. In other words, first week of March some time - that was when WFH had his salary guaranteed last year as well. But then, I'm not 100% certain of this.) If Jets cut him before the new season, Santonio won't see that 11M of base salary from the Jets. He will net the guaranteed portion ($7.25M) and that's it. My understanding is, if nobody picks him up, the cap hit is $11.25M this year. If someone does decide to pick him up at some cheap money, then Jets are on the hook for the difference between the 7.25M (guaranteed portion) and the new salary. In short, if Giants picks him up for 1.25M, Jets are on the hook for 10M after releasing Santonio. (That's my understanding.) P.S. All the data are from nyjetscap.com
Looking forward to seeing Holmes in the WCO moving the chains w/Sanchez and laughing at all those who think that the solution is to cut everybody. LMAO.
I think Holmes can be a 1000 yard receiver on this team. I believe he is a legitimate 1 WR. I am not saying he is Elite like CJ, or LF, but a legit 1.
I will believe it once I see it. I do not think that is happening. Gimp WR that is coming off lisfranc injury? Just where do you get that kind of confidence?
The only thing that will come of a Sanchez/Holmes reunion this year is a full blown blowup that will tear the team apart. It is inevitable!
My boss just came in to ask me how I would feel about taking less salary so that he can put that money in his pocket. My first thought was to tell him to go fuck himself, but then I thought, some of my posting buddies here on ganggreen might think that meant I am not a team player. So I said yeah sure, anything i can do to help out. How about 50%?
If I underperformed the same way Holmes did with the Jets with that pay-rate, I wouldn't have a job. If I acted negatively towards my teammates and continuously called out my staff members and co-workers, I would of been shown the door a while ago.
I don't for one minute think Homes would accept a pay cut, but this isn't about the 'boss' putting money back into his pocket. It's about freeing up cap space to help make the team competitive.
If Holmes takes a pay cut, it will be paid in the form of a signing bonus. IMO. He won't lose any money. IF IF IF IF IF he took a $9 Million dollar cut, and paid it as a signing bonus his cap hit this year would be 6.5 Million saving 6 Million this year. However, his cap hit in 2014 and 2015 would increase by 3 million per year.
