Calling his first 2 seasons "good" and "top 10" is batshit crazy, but I digress. There's no reason for people to root against Sanchez as the starter. Look at a guy like Alex Smith. He took a long time to develop, and eventually, San Francisco turned him into an above average QB and got something in a trade for him. I don't care who starts at quarterback. Anyone who actively roots against Sanchez is not a good fan. Period. Sanchez has never been more than an average at best QB in 2010, but he's a guy who always needed time to develop. Every scouting report about him said he would need time to develop, and given his lack of playing time at USC, that was obvious. Most quarterbacks would have looked bad last season. Sanchez took it to a new level, but he was not bad early in the season. You could clearly tell as the season went on, his receivers had no idea where they were running their routes, and Sanchez would hesitate on every throw, and he ended up playing horrific football for an extended period of time. But he's proven he can be good enough to be a quarterback on a playoff team. That's a fact. He didn't lead the Jets to the playoffs either year, particularly in 2009 when he was atrocious during the regular season, but he made enough plays to win a decent amount of games. Mornhinweg is a clear upgrade on Sparano and Schottenheimer. If he thinks Sanchez can be redeemed, then I'm willing to let him try. The worst case scenario is that Sanchez sucks, and then he's gone at the end of the season anyway. If Sanchez wins the job, I don't have an issue with it. Hopefully, he can play well enough to keep us afloat. If he goes from embarrasingly bad to the level of play he had in 2010-2011, this team can make the playoffs. I don't have much faith in Sanchez to be anything better than mediocre, but that might be enough to make the playoffs. And, who knows, maybe having receivers he can develop a rapport with and having a coach that isn't incompetent can turn him into more than that. But I do not get rooting against him in this situation. It's just stupid.
Great post. You nailed it. I would just add on, I think the worst thing for the team's future is actually Sanchez being mediocre through inconsistency. From my perspective, we want to know where Sanchez stands after this season, so that means he either plays great or plays terrible. The middle in between those two, I think, will cause problems next offseason. I'm rooting for Sanchez to become great this year, but I also understand nothing really points to that happening except some hope and luck and it's some long odds for him not to only have his best season ever, but do it in a way where the Jets don't feel like they have to hide him
Mark had a better TD/int ratio, than either Favre or Pennington. Je also Produced More scores than either, in a single season.
I posted the link. It contains Schitty stats. http://callingtheplay.blogspot.com/2012/01/what-about-schottenheimer.html Its from when he went to St.Louis. Everything I said is dead on balls accurate. Youll norice this paragraph, before the chart... and Sanchez, was the most prolific TD tosser. Now, disprove it, or admit it.....
I knew I saw My Cousin Vinny on the program guide far too many times this past weekend. For some reason it has become the new Die Hard/Shawshank Redemption. Good movie, not worth the repeats.
Sanchez should have sat for a year or two behind a veteran QB. With that said he was thrown in the fire and improved from year 1 to year 2. Then regressed as the season went on in year 3. After being a starter for 4 seasons you would think that would be enough to get him the experience he needs. I mean what more do people want?
Well yea at this point it sure looks like my bold prediction is going to be wrong. I have no problem saying I was wrong if it was. A big part of my prediction was based on the practice schedule landing Geno starting Friday. He's not, so yea - my whole theory was pretty much wrong. Sanchez also started having good practices the day after I made the prediction. What a prick. And for those who think I'm "not a good fan" for actively rooting for Sanchez to do poorly. I couldn't care less if you think I'm a good fan or not. I'll be a fan in whatever way I please. If you don't like it, too bad. I want the Jets to win and I feel like Sanchez doesn't help.
I think mediocrity is peoples biggest fear. People act like there are only two possibilities if we stick with Sanchez: he flames out completely or he proves himself as a capable if not quite franchise QB. But what if in reality he falls in the middle somewhere? Not so bad that they feel they should move on from him but not good enough to get us to and win a Super Bowl? That's the worry and it's a very real and legitimate one,
It is actually 100% accurate, he was good for a rookie in 2009 and was top 10ish w/o a doubt in 2010. I know he wasn't rated in the top 10 so that may confuse some folks but he came through in big spots all year. He limited TOs and the pass O rescued the team numerous times or we wouldn't even have made the playoffs. you say he was atrocious during the reg season in 2009 but the facts don't bear that out. he had 3-4 awful games that skewed his overall #s. he was actually good the majority of the season but we see the cumulative #s and assume he sucked. He then played excellent football in postseason. For quick comparison sake people say Eli was better in 2010 than m akr b/c his rating was higher but he threw 25 INTs and had 30 overall TOs(Sanchez'c career high in INts is 20 and TOs is 26) including throwing 4 INTs in the biggest game of the year at GB which ultimately cost them the playoffs and despite SUPER BOWL caliber talent around him the last 4 years he has led his team(in an easier division to make the playoffs) to LESS playoff apps than Sanchez but b/c he had a better rating he must have been better, right? QBs that put up great garbage time #s and don't make big plays at big times do not impress me.
Those guys are elite, they are guys that win w/ almost anyone, there are only a few of those guys. mark was as good as pretty much anyone outside of that top group in 2010.
I feel bad for who ever starts now or 100 years down the road. Our fan base will settle for nothing other than perfection... and one mistake all the moaning and groaning ensues. We need to seriously tone down and let the coaches do what they think is right. Yea Sanchez has been outright bad... but you can't overlook the positives he brought to our franchise since being drafted either. He hasn't been dealt a good hand since being drafted... ZERO CONTINUITY. As for poor Geno, he's already a dead man walking and he hasn't even played a down. According to the media at least and some ignorant fans.
This is really getting out of hand, Mark was never a top 15 QB, he has just had the benefit of being carried by a good defense and quality veterans on offense. If you are fine with a mediocre QB, thats fine but there are some of us that believe that we might have a chance of having an elite QB with Geno Smith. Not calling Geno elite right now but I feel he has a better chance becoming one than Sanchez. We have seen what a mediocre QB can do in this league.... it can get you close but not close enough. With all the league rule changes working in advantage for elite QBs, we need to find out if we have one thats capable of becoming one on the current roster and if we don't we need to keep looking. STOP paying and being satisfied with something mediocre or below average its just sickening.
he absolutely was in 2010, I believe anywhere from 8-12. There is not a doubt about it. This game is about much more than fantasy #s. Outside of Brees, Rodgers, Peyton, Brady and ben who was better? there are a handful, it's not many and he was as good as pretty much any of them. Name the better QBs THAT YEAR. Not career accomplishments, what they did that particular season.
Michael Vick, Phillip Rivers, Matt Schaub, Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, and Tony Romo all had anywhere from significantly better to astronomically better seasons than Sanchez did that year. And that's just off the top of my head, without the benefit of going back and reviewing anything. And the bolded is patently false.
Eli Manning threw 25 interceptions in 2010, Tony Romo was injured the majority of the season. Vick had a good yr, Rivers was good and so was Schaub and Ryan.
