This is a little troubling to me. Rex might have said some of these things to avoid making any bold statements about the qb competition, but if he is serious, you'd think that a head coach would be watching the qb competition unfold in the first pre-season game. Missing a play or two is fine, but saying "you probably saw more plays than I did" is a little disconcerting to me.

preseason game. he will look at the offense on tape. he took the opportunity to coach up the defense in-game where he can see if the adjustments are being made.

this is a non story being turned into a story.
nothing to see here please move along

I heard he said something ridiculous, this is probably it.

Personally I don't want Rex near the offense, him turning his back might be a good thing. Every team operates differently, if Rex can find an offensive coordinator like Marty who takes full control of the offense, it could work. You just never know in this business.

  7. Those who have read Rex's book understand. This is exactly what worked for the 85 bears.mike ran the offense, buddy ran the defense.

Bill Bellichick has done this for years on the Patriots sideline. Defensive-Minded head coaches, in fact, have done this for years. (Of course, Bellichick knows he has Tom Brady running the show . . .)

Marty Mornhinweg called a pretty game last night. Having the OC get players consistently open even against a bad defense was fun to watch. It was a bad defense though. Passing wise that is.

I loved his book. Makes a lot of sense. Let's face it. There are guys who are offensive minded and there are guys who are defensive minded. In today's NFL, we are used to seeing offensive minded guys. I'm sure Rex did pay attention to the offense, but a man can only handle so many situations at once.

Rex can make an average defense great. Rex can't do crap as far as offense goes. Let's let Rex do his thing and Mornhinweg do his.

Those who think this is a non issue are delusional.
Let your position coaches do their job.

This just confirms that all Rex is a glorified defensive coordinator. Head coach is so much more and I am not just talking about watching the offense. As HC you need to manage the entire game - Just one example - what happens if a key reviewable play happens, who determines whether to challenge.

Rex is a great DC but he is a TERRIBLE head coach.

If Morninghweg gets complete autonomy with the offensive gameplan and calls a good game it isn't an issue, since he is supposedly the best offensive coordinator Rex has had. It'd be far more of an issue if Rex was abdicating his responsibility with a coordinator who is a neophyte/stinks like Sparano.

Rex needs to exert his influence when it comes time to bench guys though. No more having Schotty bench Holmes incidents.

    OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!
The head coach dared to pay attention to something other than what ESPN gurus deem important! And he said so!!!

    OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!
What an irresponsible asshole! How dare he rely on tape!

my fear is that rex is shown the door at the end of the year because he proves he is a better dc than a hc.

AND morningwood is promoted to head coach. that would be a catastrophe in my eyes.

How many head coaches have won a Super Bowl being a one-dimensional coordinator?

Hmmm ... Most of them are one-dims.
What's your point and what does it have to do with Rex not watching every play of first preseason game?

My fear also. Change for the sake of change is rarely a good idea.

Most have one area of specialty to be sure, but most recognize they're HEAD coaches and at least exert authority on the other side of the ball. Brian Billick was an offensive guru in Minnesota that won a Super Bowl with a defensive-oriented team. Belichick's a defensive guru that's overseen some of the most potent offenses in recent memory.

The same Morningweg that was 5-27 and screwed up an OT coin toss is going to be the next head coach? Yeah good luck selling that one. If Rex is canned, Idzik's going to hire his own guy.

Rex can choose to operate however he wants, if he has enough trust to put the key into Marty's hand then he is allowed to do that. If he wan'ts to allow Marty to choose QB to then so be it.

The only input Rex should have on offense is situational stuff like going for it or not on 4th and 5 from the 38 yard line.

I dont have a problem with how he is functioning, moreso a problem with how honestly he answers questions. He needs to be more like Mumbles up in NE when it comes to giving the writers fuckall to work with.
