It's interesting to note that even when he's still being referred to as a "lame duck" coach, Rex, not anyone of the players, remains the face of this franchise. I don't know if anyone else noticed the promo for next Monday's game during last night's Saints/Dolphins game but the commercial stated that "Rex Ryan and the Jets were taking on Matt Ryan and the Falcons." This goes to show just how valuable Rex still is to this team both on the field and off. I think the Jets organization needs Rex a lot more than people think, or at least until a star player emerges that they can market.
While this is minuscule, I completely agree. People that are calling for Rex's head are just those who have no one else to blame. With Sanchez gone, there is no one else to put the blame on, so they slap it on Rex. I hope Rex stays with this franchise for years. I hope Idzik sees the value in him and signs him to an extension. His whole plan with a young and fast defense is now coming to light. He went ahead and hired a great mind at OC and everything is starting to fall in place. There really is no need for this team to start all over again with a new coach and lose that defense we carry every year.
rex is an excellent HC, one of the best in the league and I think his best coaching job was last year in the 6-10 season. That team should have won 2-3 games/ the healthy talent we had and we were in contention until December. Amazing job, great coach. I hope we aren't dumb enough to fire him.
I like Rex. He is not only a great defensive mind but also a good motivator.I want Jets to win as much games as possible this year so his contract gets extended. Letting him go will be a big mistake. Rex is the man.
It wasn't just revis, we lost our best offensive player a week later. In the first qtr of the season a week apart we lost our best defensive player(and arguably the best D player in the league) and our best offensive player. we also lost Keller, we had to start Chaz Schilens and give Clyde Gates(who couldn't make a bad Miami roster as far as WRs go) major playing time. Add in the Tebow stuff and it was amazing we had as many wins as we did.
Yeah but I was too lazy to go in depth on all the injuries so I just mentioned Revis. We won 6 games with I think the 30th ranked or so offense in the league. I wonder how Sanchez would have played under MM this season.
I could not agree with you more, Please lets just stay the same for a few years without busting everything up. I like Rex and I certainly would not want to play against him. Lets PLEASE STAY THE COURSE.
I strongly agree with you. I think it's become popular for the media to say that Rex Ryan is a "lame duck" and to speculate that "it's just a question of when he's going to get fired, not if" and things like that. If they fired Rex, who is a proven defensive mastermind- that's a huge thing to throw away. Then you open up the possibility of having a bad offense and just a mediocre defense, and having some 3-13 and 4-12 seasons while Rex takes the Cardinals or whoever to a Super Bowl. I don't want that. I think the best route is to see what you have in Geno Smith and possibly Matt Simms (if Smith keeps having these horrible 2 - 4 turnover games week in, week out) and if neither shows promise you take a good WR and another second round QB and try again, hoping to build up the WR corps and the secondary. By 2015 this team should be very good, but with a top defense (as we will have if we keep Rex) the team could be a real Super Bowl contender.
I agree with everything here but the drafting part. If you don't have the answer at QB on the team in 2013, you go first round in 2014 in a QB heavy draft, as long as the talent is really there. The Jets will have significant cap room next season to find WR/TE talent in FA and can pick a few WRs and/or TEs in the draft to help a young signal caller.
Rex is definitely the face of out franchise. He's a good coach and his backlash has been media bull shit.
As he should be, he has been our identity for the last 5 years, after all he is the field marshal, I almost fear post Rex jets, boring an lame
Hc When your Head Coach is the face of the franchise you are in trouble. Head Coaches come and go . What the Jets need besides more good players is an HC who runs the show. No GM will base his future on someone who leaves half the game to a coordinator. Face it young fans they need an organizer who has the pulse on the whole squad. Idzik will find someone who will bring this young club along. Rex will be fine but he will leave the Jets after this season.
Actually... you're totally right about that. If Smith is statistically one of the worst QBs by the end of the season, I think you take a QB in the first round, a truly promising one who looks relatively pro-ready. Smith is on pace for about 32 interceptions and 8 lost fumbles this season, which is 40 turnovers. That's awful. I don't care if you're making a few nice throws per game, if you have a 40 turnover season you'd better also have a 60+ TD season, and the TD part is just not going to happen. Now maybe Smith settles in and does better, fewer turnovers - but if he's still a bottom-5 QB, or if he seems decent but still has a 4 turnover game every 2 or 3 or 4 games, then forget it. The NFL does not exist to make QBs childhood dreams come true- that only happens if you earn it. Deep QB classes like this one don't come around all that often, so I agree that it'd be better to try again with a true top-notch QB prospect if Smith continues to struggle. We can still get good targets for next year's QB (whoever he is) because we'll have lots of draft picks and lots of cap space for free agents, like you said. If we draft a new QB next year, I don't want it to be someone who only started 16 college games (Sanchez) or only played out of the shotgun (Smith). He should be someone with no huge glaring weaknesses, no major character issues, who will work hard, not act entitled, have at least a decent arm, and make good decisions (no backfumbles, no running backwards 20 yards in the face of pressure, no buttfumbles, frequent 0-turnover games, etc.) Our best chance to find a QB like that is in the first round. Of course, I'm still rooting for Smith to be good, but if his stats are bad, then I'll root for him to be a good backup QB.
Really? Parcells wasn't the face of the Giants? Lombardi of the Packers etc etc. Now I'm not actually comparing Rex to those guys (at least not till he's won a couple of Lombardis himself), just taking issue with the statement that when the head coach is the face of the franchise you are in trouble. The statement just doesn't hold water. I am glad, however, that the majority of the posters want Rex to stay. I don't want to continue the coaching carousel. Cower took 14 years to win one, BB how many as head coach? Again you can go down the list. I feel with Rex, Idzik and MM we finally have a good team leading the franchise. Let's not break it up till they've had a chance to show what they have.

No. The QB that you're describing in not coming out of the draft. Rookies are going to have a learning curve and make mistakes. To get what you're describing, we would need to pick up a FA QB. I'll take the learning curve and mistakes, and the chance to see this franchise groom a long term solution at QB.
Im pissed that this stripped down, cheap ass roster is what Rex has to work with to keep his job. Weve seen what he can do with a balanced team. It will be a fucking shame if he gets fired.
