I have been a staunch advocate for Rex Ryan and what he brings to a football team as far as how the players play for him and how he can scheme a decent defense into a really good one, or a good one into an elite unit. For this reason I think the proposed firing of him has been talked about with out much of this in mind. What we would lose on the defensive side of the ball with his departure. Now with the arrival of Marty, a competent OC presence we've been lacking for many years. I was worried he might take the same approach he took with McCoy and Vick last year in his play calling but he has turned over a new leaf. Marty has been showing some great play calling to really help a rookie QB. I am so anxious to see this coaching combo just keep complimenting one another and becoming more cohesive. The future seems bright, I hope we can see Rex back next year to see what this group can do with a year of working together with a young group under their belt.
I mentioned Marty is the best acquisition the Jets made this off-season after our week 1 victory. The man is a offensive wizard, we have lacked for so long.
I thought Rex said he wasn't going to make stupid challenges this week. After those two dumb challenges last week which didn't allow him to challenge a play later in the game that he might have won on. But that one yesterday was obviously not going to be overturned. I really did like his energy before during and after the game. It's obvious the players love playing for him. But he has to clean up his act in terms of challenges, etc. He did clean up his act with the team on penalties and turnovers. I just hope he stops the soft coverage because a good Qb like Ryan and Big Ben will complete 90% of their passes if they have that kind of a cushion like last night.
idk i liked the challenge there...he was hoping they might call it an incomplete pass, which would have made a big difference. So you are saying that Ryan will complete 90% of passes with coverage like last night. Although we faced Ryan last night with the same scheme you are bashing. Did he complete 90% of his passes? Did the Falcons win the game? I'm confused.
I think he's referring to the soft defense on the last two drives where Ryan tore the Jets apart and took the lead.
As a HC you have to make a call in seconds and not have the benefit of replay and relying on someone elses eyes as well. Another thing to take into account, and this may be a bit of a reach, but it also sent a message to the officials as well, maybe. Mind games Other than the outcome last night, I think we also saw Rex come of age as a HC. He was 100% right in his presser, EVERYONE contributed to this win, great team effort
Ive been saying this for a little while now, but we have the best coaching staff that we have in a LONG time. From top to bottom, they all are excelling. I really hope it isnt split up after this season. Rex has shown he can be a very good coach in the league (although he can make some head-scratching calls with time management and challenges) and Marty compliments him very well. We are invested in Rex's D, and I think that if we somehow fire him after this season, it stunts some of our young players' growth. I think it could be even worse if Marty follows Rex in a whole regime change- which could screw up Geno's development.
Never in his 5 years here have I ever doubted Rex. I've always said he was the man for the job because of what he brought to the table and his ability to get the play out of his guys. It's good to see that old Rex Ryan swagger shining through. As for Marty, hell of an OC and the best one we've had IN A LONG TIME. Keep Geno on the right path and him and Rex can sit pretty in the playoffs soon enough. JET LIFE TIL THE NEXT LIFE!
Yes and they seem to get along good and listen to each other aproaches , i honestly think Rex talked to MM about the play calling , and they did slightly change it but was still tight agressive and unpredictable.
I agree with the OP. Having a very good OC to go along with Rex is a match made in heaven. The Jets can win under this configuration. I hope the Jets can keep this coaching staff intact, and that Idzik continues to add Sheldon Richardson type talent through the draft. In two or three years with this coaching staff this team could be very very good.
Just think of these 3 big coaching losses - David Lee, Dunbar, Morningwood. Besides loosing Rex, the mastermind of the D, and who I think is a really good coach in Thurman...not to mention Lynn may split as well. Dunbar who has definitely made an impact with our front 7 and we would basically need an entire rebuild of the D.
Never doubted Rex for a moment, once paired up with the right coordinator it all comes together. This young talent, there's no reason to fire a HC if we don't make the playoffs.
Another poster in this thread mentioned continuity already, but I wanted to underscore it's importance. Keeping a coaching staff intact for a few seasons is essential to the success of a franchise, and it is something we haven't had. No question Sparano had to go last season, as his offense and playcalling were a total joke. It was painful much of the time to watch. If Mornigwhig can keep this offense on track and sticks around for a while, then we will have the continuity we need. I thought it would be a couple years before our window opened, but it seems to be cracking open a bit already. How open it gets this year is anyones guess, but we are certainly ahead of the schedule I had set in my mind.
It is not only essential to the success of the franchise, but also to the success of our rookie quarterback who to be honest is not playing with a full deck. David Lee would be the third most important coach on the team, behind Rex and Idzik, because of what he does for Geno. The worst thing the Jets can do to Geno is change up any of those three pieces.
I feel much the same way. What Rex did in his first two seasons, engineering playoff upsets over more talented teams, on the road, that was something special. It's a rare coach who can pull that off in back-to-back seasons. The guy is a defensive guru and a great motivator. Absolutely, the team can win a championship with him in charge.
At some point during the game it occurred to me that Marty approaches O much like Rex approaches D. Mix it up, confuse the opponents, and most importantly not be as predictable as recent Jet OC's, especially Sparano. Yes, Rex seems to have found an OC who complements his approach to the game. This combo is effective. I think changing out Sparano for Marty is the single biggest upgrade going right through the roster and CS compared to last year.
Not quite success, Rex still doesn't have a clue about game management, like not going for a 2 point conversion last night or when he misuses his timeouts by letting or not letting the clock run out or blows them on insignificant situations But on D he is the man, and MM seems like he's the man on offense. We still need game management which is missing
