Two years in a row we have had no talent on the offensive side of the ball and have own at least 6 games. This year we could even be .500. You improve that side of the ball and there is no reason we can't win 9 or 10 every year.
Either your assessment is BS or our previous and current GM are worthless figure heads that let Rex select the draft. I would like to think not. It's easy not to blame the coach when you step in shit and get someone like Brady as your QB. Rex has ways to go, but he gets more out of dog shit rosters than damn near anyone. Please see Houston for the opposite.
If your team doesn't have a franchise QB with 2-3 top receivers and a great TE (which the Jets don't have any of) then you're NOT going to win many air-it-out battles with the likes of Manning in Denver, Rogers in GB, or Brady in NE. At that point your only option, especially with a rookie QB and very bad receivers is to play game management and run the friken ball. Running the ball and playing conservative at QB has a lot of advantages: 1- you cut your turnovers in half, maybe even more 2- you control the clock and keep the 'other guy' off the field. Far fewer 3-and-outs when you establish a good running game. 3- running for 4 yards a clip leaves a lot of 3rd and 2's. Not 3rd and 10's. Field position is generally won on 1st and 2nd down keeping 3rd downs manageable and far easier to convert be it run or pass. Rex really didn't have the players to establish a good running game either, especially with Kerley and both TE's out. But with Geno struggling with no receivers, trying for a running game was by far the lesser of the two evils Rex had to chose from.
LOL! So Rex is a defensive genius, yet he had NO say in the team investing its last FOUR number picks on defense? And you expect people to believe that? You're right--I am sure that Rex wanted ALLof those selections to be on offense. And don't forget what a great handler of players/coordinators Rex is--He tattoos a loser QB's number on his body. He names Santonio Holmes team captain and then Holmes (Rex's appointed captain) has a melt down in the huddle and screams at his teammates until he is removed. Rex has had 3 offensive coordinators the last 3 years and the offense stinks! But that's not Rex's fault--he was getting a lot out of dog shit as you claim. It is amazing to me that so many people are so happy that Rex has put up 8-8, 6-10, and probably 7-9 last 3 years, and you view that as some kind of major accomplishment. Most fans would be greatly disappointed with that kind of mediocrity. I know, when the jets win, Rex gets all the credit, he "makes so much out of dog shit rosters" (which he clearly had NOTHING to do with building), and when he loses, it's none of his fault, he was dealt a bad hand. Glad that's been clarified.
Lol, one of your reasons is because he got that tattoo, seriously? Look a lot of what you're saying is definitely valid, Rex has got his flaws for sure. I'm sort of on the fence, leaning a tiny bit towards him staying. .. but still not quite sure. But the reason why many want him back is because with decent offenses he was able to lead the team to the conference title game in 09/10. We know, for the most part, what his defenses will do. Our younger defensive players will only get better, especially under Rex's tutelage. Now, is Rex capable of leading an above average offense? That's definitely questionable... for sure. But I may be willing to give him another chance, with Marty in his 2nd year, can Geno develop, with better parts around him? (In theory).... If next year we're still in this same position, with Geno still tturning the ball over left and right, and continually watching our offense go 3 and out, we've got our answer, no questions asked.
So, this came as a suprise to me, but did anyone else realize that this offense is ranked 6th in the NFL in rushing. All this despite the rookie QB and lack of talent on the outside? Perhaps things are not as bleak as we would like to believe.
Really pleased with Ivory, he's really come on the second half of the season, runs with a purpose. I think we can confidently pencil him in as the number one rb next season pretty comfortably, although I wouldn't mind pairing him with a playmaking rb from the draft, as Ivory isn't much of a pass catching back
Well, we are 6th in overall yardage and 9th in YPC. Was just browsing through stats and noticed that we were high up on the list.
What makes Powell shine is his ability to fill any role. Ivory is the better pure runner and is a capable blocker, but Powell does it all well. While we may lack that home run hitter, I see RB as the least of our problems with them as a 1-2 punch.
Yeah, I think he had either bad blocking or some rustiness in the first few games, but after that he became just what the Jets were hoping he'd be. I still like Powell, but I could see drafting a 22 year old who can catch and block well. It's very fortunate that Ivory didn't get any major injuries this year- the big knock against him is that his style should make him really injury prone, but thankfully he's stayed healthy.
Wow, you're right. This definitely surprised me - here are the stats for anyone interested http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/rushing Since 2011 we have gone from 22nd in the league to 12th in the league (2012), and now to 6th. YPC may be more significant, but we've steadily improved in that regard as well. Very interesting considering that Marty is traditionally pass-heavy. It shows that he has been able to adapt to our talent situation, which may be a good reason to keep him next year. - We're also 9th in Kickoff return yards which was a big surprise for me, 3rd in overall number of tackles, and dead last in turnover differential (tied with Houston at -17). That definitely tells you why the season went as it did.
A very good reason to keep him. The guy can coach offense, there is no question about it. He has truly put our pile of shit offensive roster in the absolute best positions possible way more times than not. I think losing him would be a very awful decision.
I would say that it hasn't been neglect as much as very poor choices. Starting with the Santonio signing, drafting Shonn Greene, Stephen Hill, James McKnight, etc. If the first 3 worked out as intentioned, then I think we'd be having very different conversations at this point in time. Without turning this into a Sanchez bash, I think Geno would be a better solution to QB with those 3 pieces contributing in a significant way...
I agree, neglect is wrong, whiffs on talent and developing talent is more like it. Sanchez, Greene, Slauson in 2009 draft. Vlad, Joe McKnight, Termintor in 2010 draft. Powell, Kerley, McElroy, Scotty McKnight in 2011 draft. Hill, Gannaway, Griffin, White in the 2012 draft. Geno, Winters, Aboushi, Campbell, Tommy B in the 2013 draft. We traded for Holmes and Braylon and Ivory. Powell, Ivory, and Kerley are consistently, positively contributing to the Jets offense, but none of them stars. That's not neglect, that's messing up and it goes all the way back to 2000 for the Jets.
Why didn't you include Mo Wilk, Sheldon Richardson, and Coples? That is at least 1 star, maybe 2. How come you didn't include Austin Howard or Damon Harrison or Antonio Allen or Demario Davis or even Kenrick Ellis? All of them have developed quite nicely. Kerley and Powell are both very solid role players, and considering where they were drafted, you cannot ask for much more. Lots of the guys you listed (aboushi, Cambell, Tommy B, White, Griffin) are either end of the draft picks or it's too early to evaluate. Hard to fault a coach for not developing 6th and 7th round picks that he probably had 0 say in drafting into productive players. the overwhelming majority of late round picks do not make it. Sorry, but that's the truth. I'm sick and tired of fans blaming Rex for the General Manager's job. On the whole, we've probably been slightly below average in terms of drafting and signing young talent under Rex. The general manager get's the lions share of blame for that. If Rex really was secretly doing Tannenbaum's job and drafting the past few years and you don't think he's been doing a good job of that, then fine. But that doesn't mean fire Rex. All that means is limit his influence in the draft room.
I was responding to the idea that we didn't surround the QB with enough talent or develop it enough, so that's why I didn't include defense. And it wasn't even a Rex thing, just a general thing about the Jets recently. So yeah, you jumped the gun there responding to me with this
