You need guys on the outside who can stretch the field. Receivers who can take the top off a defense. A TE is good but a dynamic WR is way more important for this vertically challenged offense.. The focus needs to be on a game breaking WR in the first round. If none of the top 3 or 4 are available then you can look at Amaro in the 1st and a WR in the 2nd round. But primarily, a top WR needs to be the early target in this draft.
WAIT did we not draft Hill in the second round. How did that work out. Why roll the dice in the draft if the WR spot is so important. We should spend the money in FA and GET a proven one. Then draft the BPA, if a WR drops to us take him. But overall the Offense should be priority one this year.
It's hard to get two TE's that can both catch AND block competently. If you do though it creates all sorts of mismatches all over the field. LB'ers trying to cover TE's. DB's getting mauled in the running game. Safeties forced to cheat up leaving DB's exposed in single coverage. It was the way NE was going before Gronk fell apart and Hernandez went GTA.
Hill was an abject failure of a pick by our former FO (I'll leave Rex out of that pick even tho who knows? maybe he had input on him). Although Bradway doesn't deserve a pass. Any GM with half a brain should be able to pick a much more college proven, NFL ready WR than Hill. It's such a deep draft at WR this year that we can go with about 10 different guys and they'd have a much better shot at success. Hill was the epitome of a project. I hate project picks especially in the first 2-3 rounds. Yes we do need to upgrade the entire offense, I completely agree. And with that in mind, we need to build the core of that offense which is QB, Explosive WR, Slot WR, RB's and then TE. The only exception is if that TE is the next coming of Gronk or Graham. But typically you have a much better likelihood of getting an impact guy at wideout with your first pick than a TE. Also the WR will have a greater impact on this offense right out of the gates. If one of those top 4 or so wideouts aren't available at 18 then yes, I'd look at Amaro as the kid's agility and receiving ability impressed me the other night. But first and foremost, I want a game breaking wideout to stretch field and give Geno a little more breathing room in the pocket. I'd even be happy with Amaro and Cooks if it went down like that.
Yeah we're in agreement here. There are exceptions to the rule and I'd be fine with Amaro if one of those top WR studs aren't there at 18. Then I'd be all for Amaro and a Cooks type in the 2nd. The only thing that scares me about that scenario is would some of these other top wideouts still be there at 50 or whatever number pick our second rounder is. Because our priority has to be game breaking receiver whether that comes in the form of a TE (less likely) or a WR (more likely).
I think the Jets need to draft 1 & sign 1 via free agency. That is to go along w/ Cumberland. This has become a very crucial position with the modern rules & It's also a position that has alot of injuries. Stack up w/ reliable athletes who can catch. Sign Pettigrew & draft a guy early (ASJ/Ebron/Amaro)let's make this position a strength.Pettigrew is only an average receiver between the 20's but he blocks very well & is above average in the red zone.
Why stop there. Draft 2, Sign two, keep Winslow and Cumby, Put Sudfeld in too. Empty backfield 7 TE sets. that'd how we'll dominate. we already showed you can win without any wide receivers this past year.
i'd like to have cumberland back. and I also like sudfeld's potential. I would be ok with gresham as long as the contract isnt crazy. id be 100% against drafting amaro or ebron in the first round. i dont think that they are worth a pick that have for the position they play and with the available guys in free agency.
i dont think anyone is saying that we shouldnt upgrade our offensive skill guys or that we dont need a playmaker on offense. i think people would just prefer we go WR instead of stockpiling tight ends. especially with so many holes in general. jimmy graham is great. but so is josh gordon and aj green. id prefer we get a playmaker on the outside and someone who can kill you after the catch. i love amaro, but i just dont think you take TE round 1 or that it translates as well as WR does in the pros. keller for instance was godlike in college, yet just solid in the pros.

I have an unconventional option for those of you hoping the Jets land the next Jimmy Graham or Jordan Cameron. Logan Thomas went from being the #1 best tight end prospect coming out of high school to now a late round possible UDFA NFL QB prospect. To put this in perspective, Jace Amaro and Austin Seferian-Jenkins, two names that get thrown around a lot on these boards were the #2 and #3 TEs respectively in their recruiting class. What's interesting about Thomas is that he went to VA Tech expecting to play TE and always saw himself as a TE. It's the coaches that approached him to play QB. In a day and age where guys go directly or transfer to schools to ensure they can play QB, this guy had to be asked. While this change may have been best for VA Tech, it might not have been the best thing for Thomas' pro aspirations. VA Tech essentially converted a blue chip TE prospect, like Amaro and ASJ, into a below average QB. In addition to once being the best tight end in the nation, the 6-6 260 Thomas has a basketball background which seems to be a prerequisite for a great modern day TE (i.e., Graham, Gates, Cameron...etc.). Thomas has the extra advantage of understanding what a QB would expect and need from his TE. Here was the scouting report on Thomas coming out of high school along with some of his own thoughts about his game.
You forget Vernon Davis (1st round) - You can argue Vernon Davis is the best all-around TE in today's league. Blocks, is explosive, can beat ANYONE on the field. Doesn't have a Peyton Manning or Drew Brees throwing to him. Ebron has Vernon Davis like athleticism / skill-set.
You grab the best play-maker period. TE or WR - grab the best one available. There is a surplus of WRs available in this draft they can pick up in the 2nd round, IF the Jets were to pick up a TE in the 1st. Do you not understand TEs can line up as WRs and beat CBs off the LOS and beat them deep also?
I did not forget I purposely left out the 1st round TEs, which there weren't many from the list to support the point that you can get quality TEs outside of the 1st round. BTW the list is of all the top TEs in 2013 and some other notables that were injured.
I would love to throw some (reasonable) money at Garrett Graham this offseason. He's young and I'm sure the Texans will want to keep him to go along with their #1 pick which will presumably be a QB, but maybe he'd take the bona fide starting job and some cash with us over being the second TE behind Daniels? Wishful thinking I'm sure.
How is having a top TE not important? If GRONK was fully healthy.... No team would be able to cover him with 2 DB's ... That said. Look at all the playoff teams? All have good to great TE's that helped them win their games this week. Fleener had the game winner and so did Gresham. Eli manning struggled badly without a TE this season. BB always drafts TE's and almost had the best 2 TE sets ever with gronk and hernandez. Too bad he made the wrong choice/Bad luck of TE's he drafted. I understand what the thread is about and believe in TE being so important to a QB ! All the elite offenses have at least one !
