Well, as of now they're talking about a bit of rain but 37 degrees. I guess that's better than a snow storm or 10 degrees. Then again, sitting in cold rain sucks.
Perfect conditions for who? If you are a team built around defense and running, a frigid, windy, snowy day may be perfect for you.
... and if you're the worst team in the league, playing in a mine field might be optimal. But we're talking about "perfect conditions" for determination of which team is a combination of "played best" and "most talented". And for that, you're really talking about 60-70 degrees, dry field, no precipitation, no wind.
Who decided we need to play the championship in perfect conditions to determine who played best and was the most talented? News to me. Last I checked the game of football has been played in bad weather since it's inception. Somehow we've managed to decipher which teams have played best and had the most talent through it all. And why is it that we can determine who is the best team in the rain, but not the snow? Oh, and even in the most perfect conditions, the best and most talented team doesn't always win. What if the "most talented" team gets eliminated in a snow game prior to the superbowl?
I think the biggest issue is that the city of NY hasnt been taken over by the Super Bowl like it does in other cities. Sure there are events but it doesnt seem like NYC is skipping a beat, while it seems in any other city the entire town is crazed about the Super Bowl and you have fans from all over. I think NYC is just to large for even the Super Bowl to take it over. What do I really know though, I havent gone to any other city during Super Bowl week, but its just what ive been hearing. Also I dont think the game itself being played outdoors is a big deal but I think the week leading up, and all the event being outdoors really hurts it because honestly the goal is to enjoy yourself and that might be a tad hard if your standing in the cold. People dont vacation up north in the winter, they go south. Luckily we have two teams that have faced similar cold that we have had, imagine if it was like the Chargers and the Bucaneers playing? The fans would be outraged.
If it's the beginning of February, I am taking a few days off and spending some money, I don't want to go to a cold weather site. I think the SB should rotate among San Diego, Phoenix, NO and the Florida sites. Even Dallas can be too cold in the winter. When i had season tickets I went to plenty of cold games in the Meadowlands. It was kind of fun sometimes. But in hindsight did I prefer it was cold? No. Perfect football weather is late October, not January. It's one thing to have seeding in the playoffs. The better team should have the advantage of playing home games, in front of their fans. But since the SB is by design played at a neutral site between the conferences, the question becomes one of CHOICE . It has nothing to do with whether the game is more real or not if played in one set of conditions compared to another. It is a question of why play in the cold when you don't have to? Seems rather obvious to me.
People are pussies. If my team is in the super bowl,I would sit in Siberia. This is about people who are not fans of either team, not football fans but just want to party and go to an event. I hope Mara and Woody get embarrassed and it rains and all the people in the first 2 levels between the 30's go inside for the game and the TV shows tons of empty seats.
You miss the point. Why play it in Siberia when you don't have to? It's not just sitting in the stadium. It's where you want to be for a long weekend in mid winter. But rather than face that reality, let's be internet toughguys. "Yay Siberia!" Really.
Not to mention the fact that, if by some miracle the Jets finally get to PLAY in one of these Super Bowls, imagine how fucked we'd all feel if the outcome was materially adversely affected for them by the weather conditions? I'd be pretty pissed if after all this time, my team finally gets to the big show and then can only wheel out a third of its game plan because there is ice and snow on the field. Fuck that.
Regardless of the weather this is going to be one of the most memorable SBs in history. The backdrop of NYC, the controversies between NY & NJ (where stadium is at), and then throw a possible blizzard into the mix? No one will ever forget this week. I love it and I hope they do it again.
Yeah and the fact that they really didnt even make the tickets available to the real fans is pathetic. They are putting all the lottery winners into the upper deck, the lower deck is going to be for the families of players, the big sponsors, corporate etc. There are people going to the Super Bowl not for the game but to go see Bruno Mars halftime show, pathetic.
I feel bad for you PSL guys, I hope you guys are getting reimbursed or only getting charged for 9 games next season instead of 10.
I couldn't care less how cold or wet the rich fuckers going to the game are. While I'm stuffing my face with some delicious junk food and washing it down with a nice craft beer in the comfort of someones living room I'd prefer to see a weather event during the superbowl. If ticket sales are actually suffering I understand why they'd want to avoid the weather.
I agree but for reasons other than football. Putting a roof would have allowed other sports to get involved in Metlife Stadium. They could host the final 4, concerts, etc.
I believe that when the stadium was built, the quote was $800 million to add a retractable roof and that it could be added at a later date (but would be much more expensive later).
Look for very tight camera work the entire second half to avoid showing 40,000 empty seats previously occupied by "football fans" - Ha!
