Putting the chances I make of Rex getting fired in ( % ) for each hypothetical record that misses the playoffs along with my logic for each:

If the team goes 9-7 (0%) and misses the playoffs he can't and shouldn't be fired. 8-8 (40%) could realistically go either way, a lot of it might depend on how the team got there combined with Idzik's private opinion of Rex's ability up to this point. 7-9 (75%) he's gotta be a favorite to be fired and anything worse than that (97%) Idzik would have to be completely in love with him as a HC to go out on that much of a limb to keep him.

Westhoff is a smart guy. I think context will matter as well. A healthy Jet team that does not contend well next year could easily cost Rex his job. An injury-riddled roster that fails to make the cut would probably give Rex another year.

Westhoff's just making an educated guess, based on the mere fact that coaches who've missed the playoffs four straight years don't tend to get a fifth. But Westy in this case has no inside info since he's never dealt with Idzik. He may be passing on what Rex feels, if that.

Westhoff words means shit to me, he got rid of Weatherford who helped the Jints win the Super Bowl and we have not had a decent punter since then. Plus his last year, our special teams sucked. He has lost his fastball and should just take that boat and sail somewhere. Just kidding, I enjoy him on postgame but he can be a little full of himself

That's what I attributed the 3% to. Team goes 6-10 with a bunch of injuries, then Idzik privately remains a huge Rex supporter (which there is no reason to suggest he likely would be in this scenario) and is willing to stick his neck out to keep him on. Can't see Idzik standing up for Rex if all that happens and the record is as dismal as 5-11 or 4-12 under any circumstances though, probably with good reason.

The dude decided to take off and run on like 4th & 18 or something on a good snap, that was so suicidal and an obscene disregard of authority you can't seriously fault Westhoff for wanting no part of the guy. Good punter but complete headcase and punter is no position to put up with that type of primadonna.

You hate Westy because he let a punter go to the Giants. Got it.

Nevermind the decade plus of top tier special teams units, a punter makes that all mean nothing.

Yeah, I won't really post an opinion on this until I see or hear the entire interview, as not filtered through a Pats tard.

I agree..nothing will be done to Rex without Johnson buying in to it. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't Johnson that decided to keep him last year too, after all he is the one who announced it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Jets suck this season Woody doesn't fire Idzik.

Yeah that's right, Westhoff did not like Weatherford and got rid of him and replaced him with a piece of shit and cost us big time. I know he had a very good career ( not great) as a coach but that was real dumb move and for the last 2 years of his coaching career, we had crap, crap punters and that cost us lots of field position.

I would think that having the worst QB in the league during Weatherford's tenure here mattered a little more with the field position battle.

Plenty of times did the D do their job , opponent punts , Sanchez gets the ball near midfield and then goes 3 and out. When that happens more times then I care to remember I could give a shit less about a punter.

In terms of Westhoff though I think his opinion could hold a little weight. He knows just how much Woody loves Rex and it would take a massive shitshow this season for Rex to be fired. And if that happens it puts Idzik right on the hot seat too. If Idzik is thinking he'll have 3 years with a coach of his own choosing once Rex is fired then he's def mistaken.

I think Rex is on a short leash. Any GM who inherits someone else's choice for coach approaches it like that. Back to Westoff, he was REALLY critical of Mike Tannebaum when Westoff left the jets. Westoff made several comments like "How can ANY team succeed when the team WAY overpays about a half dozen players and pinches pennies with everyone else?" Without naming names, I think he was talking about the contracts of Sanchez, Holmes, Harris, Mangold, Ferguson, Revis, and perhaps Cromartie. Just another example of how stupid Mike Tannebaum was in way over his head as GM of the jets.

Westhoff was definitely upset about what all the churning did to the bottom of the roster. The special teams gunners and the returners tend to come from the last 20 or so spots on the roster. When those spots have turned into junk because of all the cap manipulation at the top of the roster you don't have much to work with unless the scouting department is going lights out at finding people in the draft. The Jets were top heavy AND they weren't making many picks AND the picks they were making weren't all that good. That will make even the best special teams coach in the NFL look bad over time.

Apparently we even contacted Westoff after we fired our special teams coach Ben Kotwica to try and bring him out of retirement. He didn't wanna come back because of the current special teams rules and how there trying to take kickoffs out of games and all that kinda stuff. Can't say I blame him they should have never changed the kickoff to begin with

So punters are not that important even when you are a defensive minded team and field position is everything? Maybe its me, because the Jets act like its not, they bring in competition for Folk but not the piece of crap we have punting. I hope they draft a punter, maybe Idzik has a 1/2 brain. Westhoff thinks he's the only one that can coach ST's, he blew it the last 2 years, it was time to go and live in Florida with the rest of the lizard skins.

Goodell is a total disaster at being a Commissioner. He's on a total power trip and destroying this game in the process.
