Well...If u saw the 2014 Superbowl with the seahawks vs Broncos....You might have noticed how Manning was harassed all game by Avril & Bennett speeding around the edges & the pocket being pushed up the middle. I don't know...but that's just what I saw ??? www.nfl/rewind.com...check out {FREE} 5-day trial offer. !!!
Oh, I thought you were talking about OLBs since we have a 3-4 and it wouldn't make sense for us to have speedy DEs in that scheme (they are not powerful enough to get the job done in a 3-4). So we just have to compare Seattle's 4-3 with our 3-4, but the result is still the same. If we look at their DEs, the best one was Michael Bennett, and he s not really a speedster at all, just a solid all around DE. His 40 time at the combine was a slow 5.13 (Coples was 4.78 for comparison). Avril is fast, but the guy (just like Bennett) had like 8 sacks last season. So Calvin Pace (and Wilkerson) had more sacks than either of their edge rushers.
With those three players on the Jets, and too many holes elsewhere, I did not think it made any sense to go OLB in the draft. Which is why they didn't. That and that the draft did not have much to choose from.
We'll just have to agree to disagree then. For one thing, I think it is that clear cut. I don't see it as an either/or position, either. Just because LBs are smaller than Rex wants them and faster, doesn't mean they necessarily get pushed around. Rex likes his LBs bigger than any other DC in the game. AFAIK, no one has bigger/heavier LBs than the Jets do. Rex may like to confuse the opposing offense, but how frequently does he do that any more? Not very often. Rex's bag of tricks consisted of his overload blitz, rushing his DBs a lot, and having the DL mill around at the LOS and not set until the last second. Now that the league has figured those out, he has failed to come up with anything else new. Coples and Pace may be able to play on both the DL and at OLB, but that doesn't mean they are very effective as OLBs. Because of their weight and slower footspeed, they suck in coverage, and there are quite a few running plays that they can't get to or help on because of their lack of speed. In rushing the QB, they are also slower and frequently get their too late to really apply any real pressure on opposing QBs. I think that the D is not that effective because of the lack of speed at the LB position. The very reason for having 4 LBs instead of 3, is that they're bigger than DBs and faster than DL and they can supposedly stop the run, cover receivers over the middle, and contain/rush the QB. Rex seems to totally have missed that point.
Well, I've watched every Jets game last year, and there wasn't a single time when I thought, man our OLBs are slow, or that that's the reason we are losing. Coples is a very fast guy, and while he may be slower than a Von Miller, I am sure he's faster than many OLBs out there. Once he got adjusted to the position and past his injury, he was routinely causing havoc in the backfield. Likewise, despite all the criticism he gets here, Pace finished with 10 sacks and had a productive year. I really don't know why you place the blame for our bad pass defense last year on the pass rush, which as I've already demonstrated many times was one of the better ones in the league, and not on the horrific secondary, which was just downright terrible. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I've been chirping for an edge, speed guy for years as i firmly believe it is the best disruption against a pass happy offense - not a shut down corner, not a stud MLB/ILB, but a maniac coming off either edge. i think with the current talent we have on the DL and hopefully the eventual talent in the secondary - a pro bowl caliber edge guy would be the proverbial icing on the cake. i hope the jets dont miss the window of opportunity cause we would surely have the potential to be a #1 defense in many categories.
Given all the holes elsewhere, on O for lack of skill players, a weak second year Qb and on D a poor pass D, it was too many holes to use a top pick on OLB. Coples is a first round pick who showed progress as last year progressed. Imo it would have been foolish to go OLB this off season.
We have atleast 3 guys who are gonna start in picks 1-3. We aren't the Seahawks,Picks rounds 1-3 are always the most important.I feel like people are looking at our draft and thinking 6th rounders are gonna start now.The Seahawks DB coach isn't getting the credit he should be .All there late round picks that pan out all seem to be DBs Earl Thomas-1st round Russel wilson-3rd round Richard Sherman-round 6 Bobby Wagner-round 2 Russel Okung-round 1 James carpenter-round 1 Golden Tate-round 2 Percy Harvin-Traded for, former first round pick Lynch-traded for, former first round pick Kam Chancellor-round 5 Walter Thrumond-round 4 Byron Maxwell-round 6
I know that - though it would have been nice to get a barr or dee ford - i am focusing more on the entire body of jet work over the years that seems to ignore the pure OLB position. oh well maybe next year.
If Coples does not work out, I would agree OLB becomes a big need. Even if he does Pace will be a year older, and unless someone else steps into that void, OLB will be a need. Just not as big as if Coples flops. Heh.
I think the return of Antwan Barnes and a possible signing of a cap casualty will help sure up the spot opposite coples. I have very little confidence in pace this year, i think he is just going to physically break down this year. Too old
I'm really not worried about the OLB position this year. We've got a solid corps between Coples, Pace, and Barnes. You don't need an Brian Orakpo when your D-Line is as solid as ours is, not to mention there is a legitimate chance Coples could break out. I'd love to see one of our late round picks show something nice, but even if they don't we can address the position as we see fit next offseason.
Per the bolded sentence. Right. Ever hear of Bruce Irvin? He was either injured or suspended during the playoffs and SB. He is a speedy pass rushing OLB. He helped get them to the playoffs. He may not be elite yet, but in 2012, his rookie season, he had 8 sacks, and I don't think Avril was there yet. If you think the Jets' pass rush is good enough, then I don't know what to say other than you either have incredibly low standards.
If being among the top of the league in sacks and QB hurries isn't a good enough pass rush for you I think you might have some unreasonably high standards. Antwan Barnes happens to be a speed rusher BTW. EDIT: Top half of the league I should say.
How can you make an argument based on something you "think" could've been? Irvin may just be a stud in a few years but he's not currently. Until that happens, he is right, they do not have a stud edge rushing linebacker as of now. Let alone two of them.
I believe the real point here is Irvin is a part of group of good/speedy passrushers. Notice I said {GROUP}... If Irvin was added to Jets present roster, he would be there only speed rusher....practically. Remember..."when 3 or more get to the QB...that's a party"......lol.
If I am not mistaken, Trevor Reilly was clocked at 4.66 during his 40 yard dash. If that's not fast enough for you, I don't know who is fast enough for you in the first place. [And remember. This kid is still recovering from his ACL surgery after his junior year. He played through ACL injury in his junior campaign. Don't you love that? I know I do! On top of that - he can line up all over the places - OLB/ILB/DE, you name it. Tough kid with excellent work ethic, top-of-the-line leadership and above average measurables. If you don't love that, then probably this is not the sports you should follow. I was nearly ecstatic with this pick in 7th round pick for a reason - and in retrospect, he wouldn't have been with the Jets with T-Bomb running the draft. What a difference.]
This may sound crazy to some. I would bring back maybin short term if he's available. His skill set with THIS d-line would be a good fit to me in situational pass rush schemes. With wilk getting that double team maybins speed getting almost untouched would be disruptive. Just a thought.
