Think about some of the Jets previous draft picks that left you scratching your head wondering if the Jets knew something that nobody else knew (they didn't). For example: Stephen Hill in the 2nd round Vlad Ducasse in the 2nd round Idzik hasn't had any questionable picks like that. I'm not saying that there won't be poor results, but the picks have been smart so far.
I cant speak to Ducasse because I don't remember him as a prospect. But I feel like most weren't scratching their head when Hill was picked. I imagine most were happy. He was a first-second round prospect at the time. In hindsight, it was a dumb pick, because clearly he wasn't ready to be an NFL receiver.
no one was really whining about those picks when they happened and every GM will have busts on their track record. That previous GM built teams that gave us chances to win SBs, I hope the current one gets us over the hump.
Too early to tell. The reason Tanny's misses stand out is because we've seen them play (or not play) for years and he traded away draft picks so we had less of them. Misses stand out more.
I remember that people were wondering if Hill would make it in the NFL b/c he played for a team that hardly ever passed the ball. He didn't have much experience in college.
Both Ducasse and Hill came in as projects that needed to be developed. The fact that they did/have not develop at a desired rate speaks to not only their talent, work ethic and football intelligence or lack there of but also the competency of their respective position coaches.
Yes, they were both projects. You don't draft projects in the 2nd round. You draft projects in the 4th or later rounds. That's why they were not smart picks.
I agree. I just remember the Kiper and McShay's of the world mocking him as a late 1st-early 2nd round. So where we got him wasn't really too bad, based on his evaluations, its not like we reached tremendously, at least based on the mocks. Having said that, his evaluations were terrible, and he ended up being a terrible pick lol.
Not sure if this is true. Demaryius Thomas was a similar project pick drafted in the first. How did that pan out? I think a better rule is that you don't draft projects in the second round without having a contingency plan. Where Tanny failed is with the latter. He drafted these guys with no insurance putting the team in the unenviable position on having to depend on them right away.
I always thought that it was our scouting department that sucked but at this point I have to wonder if maybe they were just ignored on a lot of picks by Tanny in the past? I mean there's got to be something pretty good about the scouting dept if every head coach we've had has left them in place over these years, right?
We often talk about Woody's affinity to Rex, maybe the biggest bromance in Florham Park is Woody and Terry Bradway. Maybe it's Woody that insist that every GM keep Terry and his crew? Woody hired in 2001 and he's been here ever since.
I don't know that Idzik's picks are more professional. He's taking his chances on a couple of those picks (as all GMs do), and some might consider certain picks a reach. What i can say is that he is putting an emphasis on character which we haven't seen since Mangini. Taking a lot of college team captains, high motor, team first, mature for their age players. Also took a lot of guys who like to hit. I like those characteristic, and believe that will pay off in time. Especially on a Rex team, where he expects hard work, but isn't going to babysit.
I think Tanny was more interested in the "splashy" pick and the "consensus" picks. As fans its typically easier for us to get on board with picks when they align to the consensus of Kiper, McShay, Mayock, etc. Tanny also seems to have valued workouts at least as much as production (Gholston, Hill, Ducasse). So far Idzik is the anti-Tbaum.
This is the dumbest thread in a long time. The original poster points to 2 random busts of the past and somehow relates it to Idziks professionalism?? Huh? I now feel dumber having read that. Every GM will have busts anyway it's inevitable. Idzik just hasn't been on the job long enough to have his signature busts, but he will. (For all we know they are already on the roster)
