I think we had a depth issue last year, one that was a calculated move too. Late round picks doesn't equate to depth, but it gives you more shots at getting those players. Well the Jets had 12 picks but not 12 picks that could be traded right? I though comp picks could not be traded.
I believe we had a depth problem in 2012 but not so much this past year with deference to the WR position. You are correct that comp picks could not be traded. Even with that, I believe we still had 2 4ths, a 5th, 6th and 7th eligible for trade. This whole argument about trading picks is silly because we know they tried. I'm told and I believe they tried to trade with SEA to get the 32nd pick and they confirmed they tried to trade to the top of the second. Whether or not our potential trade partners were too greedy or Idzik to stingy we will never know. What we do know is that at some or multiple points in the draft Idzik was willing to trade picks to move up. So he, for a period of time, did see value in trading away picks to move up.
Two very different styles. Idzik is building this team from the ground up via the draft. So the more picks the better. Many would disagree but the draft is a crap shot at every single round. Thus when the "so called experts " project players on the first , second etc is just an educated guess and not nearly as accurate as a top notch scouting department evaluation. Case in point - Sanchez, Hill and Ducasse. I would argue those moves were more Tanny with Rex's push overruling the likes of Bradshaw and his scouts than the other way around. That will not happen with Idzik. Tanny had a totally different agenda. He wanted to bring a championship to this team ASAP and he choose to indulge in free agency and mortgage the future in the process. A huge risk and a two edge sword. That's fine if you get the right talent and the right mix. But when you fall short because of dumb myopic nearsighted moves, like Favre, Tebow and the like you are royally screwed. Couple that with overly generous long term contracts to guys like Holmes, Sanchez etc and you are no where. No picks to build the team thru the draft in the future and cap strapped to bring in free agents. All of the sudden the future looked a lot worse than the present. Idzik can always shift to free agency once all the key pieces are in place, through cap management and constant influx of new blood, but with Tanny we could not recover, and I mean never, unable to feed the pipeline and build strength in the trenches with young talent. Thus our pathetic, porous OL for starters. Time will tell this GMs success. But so far he is putting strong pieces in play without breaking the bank for big " splashes"
Interesting. That's the first time I've seen that definition. When I think flashy, I think of guys who either put up big numbers (Peyton, Brees) or are media whores like Tebow.
They were (scratching their heads and complaining) on the Jets board where I was posting at the time. I never liked Hill as a prospect either. Only one year of decent production, very questionable hands. He had size, speed and could block. I think it's fair to say that McDougle is a bit of a head scratcher in this draft. I think most ppl think he's a bit of a reach in the 3rd round.
It's not "whining" to question a move the GM makes. This is a fan site for discussing the pros and cons of moves the team makes. Some of you guys need to quit being such assholes and quit trying to be censors by putting down people whose opinions vary from those of your own.
I'm not talking about people questioning the GM. I'm talking about people that act like there is any sort of proven past of "value" meaning a god damn thing. That's something analysts, and now fans make up to make it feel like they are somehow in the know.
I'm not sure how true that is... at the time, Bill Callahan was the Jets' Oline coach and he was the one that recruited and coached Slauson at Nebraska. I kind of doubt he didn't have college film on the guy.
They haven't been left in place. The head of scouting is different now as are about 1/2 of the scouts.
This would only be true if Idzik did not attempt to trade up. If he was able to get the deal done, would you be saying their draft styles are different. For this draft, we are looking at different results not necessarily different styles.
Well it depends upon how you define "professional," but I think staying put, and not falling in love with players or panicking and trading up is one way in which Idzik looks more professional (or more competent) than Tanny. Then there's the things you listed. He's going for football players, with high motors and great work ethic and character, not workout wonders, athletes, or character risks.
NO to all three. Get real. Vick is older and injury prone. It would have been a "flashy" move if Idzik had signed Vick when he was younger to a big $ FA contract. The same goes for Johnson and Reed, but not when they're at the ends of their careers for relatively cheap contracts. Those aren't "flashy" moves by any stretch of the imagination.
Sorry, but I don't buy the bolded portion. IMO Tanny is arrogant and a narcissist. He loved seeing himself on the back pages of the tabloids and on the talk shows. He was also a bean counter and attorney. He had zero experience in scouting and personnel. He wasn't knowledgeable or competent enough to know how to build a team. I don't think he had a clue what the differences were or consciously chose to try to win a championship ASAP. I think it was about making himself look good, getting attention, and because he thought he was smarter than everyone else. He may have been trying to do it as quickly as possible, but any competent GM would have known that the Jets didn't have the talent or depth to go about it in that way. They also would have known that when you have a 3-player draft one year, that he had to do something the next year to try to recoup picks or depth would start suffering, and that if he relied on FA too much, he'd start running in to cap problems. A lot of his actions were "reactive" not "proactive" or well thought out and planned in advance.
And to make the logic perfect: The reason Tanny's misses stand out is because we've seen them play (or not play) for years and he traded away draft picks so we had less of them. Misses stand out more when you have fewer picks in the first place. The logic during the Bradway/Tannenbaum years at GM was that few players make it really big so you have to move up and consolidate value to give yourself the best chance at stars. The problem with the logic is that injuries happen and players bust and even players who don't get hurt or bust are sometimes not the guy you thought you were getting in the first place. So the actual logic in play during those years was trade up for near perfection because anything less will get you fired. In fact there was only one nearly perfect player drafted from 2001 to 2012 and both GM's got fired as a result. Idzik's strategy is much more sound: make a bunch of picks and hope you get lucky on a few of them and enjoy the depth you get out of everybody else. So far it appears as though he got one very good player out of the deal last year and probably at least one this year. The Ravens are right - make your picks and get lucky. Make extra picks if you can also.
It's been said that sometimes the best moves one can make are the moves that one doesn't make. Supposedly Idzik tried to trade up. He didn't. Whether he was just lucky that the other team refused his offer, or whether he was smart not to overpay, or whether he tried to steal the higher pick we'll probably never know. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Right now, we can't tell which Idzik is, but in time we'll have a better idea.
I mean it could be worse like trading up into the second round for a kicker or getting our all pro Alex Van Dyk lol This team has just had shitty luck in the second round Hobson... Clemens... lets hope our fortunes change ! that said we won't know until 2015/17
