Rex, I totally agree with. But similarly, I totally disagree on Idzik and Geno. It's way too early to give up on either of them. Both have shown a lot more positives and reason for hope than for giving up on them.
Hess a class act? Since when is an utter and complete doofus a "class act"? Hess was a clueless moron and worthless. He didn't care if the Jets won or lost until he was old and about to die, then he made a deal with Satan (Parcells) to try to win. Look at the succession of clueless GMs and HCs he hired during the time he owned the team, and the Jets were the ONLY professional sports franchise never to have their own home and he never did anything about it. I despised Hess and still do. Woody Johnson is a 100x better owner and more intelligent than that moron Hess. At least Woody tried to get the Jets their own home. He just didn't do his homework and due diligence and didn't have a Plan B in place and wound up having to pull a Hess and be a co-tenant with the hated Giants. With regards to Parcells, as he has done for the last 10-20 years with every other team, he screwed the team over and walked away before he finished the job. Parcells sucked as a GM, and left the cupboard pretty empty and with with a cap mess. He brought some respect to the team, but when the team needed him the most, he went into a shell and did the worst coaching job of his career. Even after the Vinny injury, the team could have made the playoffs if Parcells had a viable backup QB in place, but he didn't. He was arrogant and stupid. I think that you're gonna wind up eating your words on both Geno and Idzik. I could be wrong on both, but I'm willing to wait and see. Geno is not Sanchez and Idzik is not Tanny. Geno's a 100x better QB than Sanchez ever was and more experienced, and he doesn't have the ego you claim. He wants to get better and works at it. He's never screwed around like Sanchez did during games, or the offseason. He deserves every opportunity to develop. Tanny was never qualified to be an NFL GM. He's an attorney and bean counter. He knew nothing about scouting or spotting talent. He never met a tradeup he didn't like. Idzik has already done more in his 1 1/2 years with the team to put it on the right course and clean up the mess that Tanny made, than probably anyone else could have. Idzik wasn't my choice as GM, but I'm willing to give him kudos. He's a coach's son, has personnel and scouting experience and a lot of NFL front office experience. At least Woody used an executive search firm instead of coming up with names of prospective GM candidates himself. Your boy Hess would have just brought in a former member of the "Jet family" and it would probably have been Kotite Part Deux. It's obvious to me that you have become bitter and cynical due to all the stupidity over the years. I get it. I'm 60 and I was where you are 3-4 years ago. I was ready to walk away from this team for good. I took a complete break from following the team for about 4 months. I stopped reading and posting on Jets boards. I came back with a new perspective. I hope at some point you will do the same for yourself. You're making yourself miserable, as I did. It's only a game. Life's too short to let some dumb sports team ruin your attitude.
Good point, to which I'll add that the receivers he had to work with last year weren't exactly trustworthy, either.
I don't think anyone should be very impressed by Woody's effort to get the WSS. It was a pure real estate play that Woody thought would fit with Bloomberg's plan to bring the Olympics to NYC. It was a stupid idea from the get go. Local opposition was high, and many fans did not want a stadium for which there would be no real parking. Woody never looked at any more realistic alternatives, like Yonkers Raceway. He had no Plan B other than going back into bed with the Giants, which is what happened. Just awful. How is that an improvement over what Hess did?
Winters reminded me of Wayne Hunter, in my opinion he needs to be put 3rd on the depth chart or cut. I really liked Aboushi, then again its only preseason, so I will temper my optimism until I see him a full game against top line defenders.
From today's practice: Chris Lopresti @CLoprestiWFAN Greg Salas continues to shine. Beautiful route and an outstanding diving catch along the sideline on pass from Vick. #NYJ Chris Nimbley@Cnimbley Vick then hit Salas on a 20 yard out, Salas had to dive and extended to make a great catch #Jets This dude is a straight out football player. I don't think there was much doubt that Kerley and Salas were the best receivers on the field last weekend.
How was AA on AJ Green? I didnt hear his name called through out the game. Is AA looking like a legit option at this point?
I'm not criticizing you, but a number of other posters were constantly posting Twitter entries like this real time. Did you find this from earlier in the day or were they just tweeted recently? Apologies, I've never subscribed to twitter, just wondering.
I didn't see anyone tweeting any of the practice updates so I found a few. Seems like it was a light practice but think Salas and Sudfeld stood out from what I read and Mangold had a toe issue.
I rewatched that play where Hill caught the pass in the middle, took a shot and lost it. Do people have a view whether that was Geno getting Hill killed or Hill just being Hill? Would other receivers hang onto the ball after taking a licking like that?i struggle with whether Hill is just too tall to go over the middle since he's an easy target or whether our expectations are too low? (Especially as i got flashbacks to last year when he got hit hard during the Thursday night New England game I think it was)
I like to keep it simple. Until hill proves otherwise it's generally because he blows that he's dropping balls IMO. My hope is that he changes that perception but until he earns it ...
In Hill's defense, he was in the middle and the ball did look sort of behind him. It might have been behind him because of defenders on the leading edge, though. Either way, he's a big strong receiver and shouldn't be smashed like that so easily.
Just watched the game and I gotta say it, I was not impressed with our first unit on either side of the ball vs. Cincy's first unit. There was no pressure generated on Dalton and he lit us up. If our D has this vaunted all powerful front 7, they might wanna show up at some point between now and opening day. Our receivers are better than last year's bunch but hardly a threat to anyone until perhaps Decker gets back. Geno looked ok against their first unit but for whatever reason, there were far too many 3 and outs. Our D will be gassed by week 11 if they have to play long minutes due to an inept offense again. The penalties were just horrific and no matter how much Rex likes the fact that the offense was sticking up for themselves and "had each other's back", it's not gonna cut it once the bell sounds and we'll be scratching for every single yard we get on offense. I saw an undisciplined team on the field in green and white. I don't know what #67 is trying to prove but if he doesn't get his shit together, he needs to sit. I think he personally was responsible for 44yds in penalties alone? Ridiculous and honestly, Rex should be publicly pissed instead of tacitly disapproving and saying it will be dealt with. Hard to believe that when the Boss talks so much shit and his players start trying to live up to it. Good thing they're keeping Vick with the two's or else he would seriously challenge Geno for the starting job. I still think Geno is perhaps a year away from truly blossoming but he definitely showed improvement over his rookie season. Nothing I've seen so far gives me any warm and fuzzy feeling about a playoff run this year. Maybe things will change. Maybe Kyle Wilson will finally turn around in coverage too.
I just watched the game today as well and had a few notes, some probably already discussed but whatever: -run defence was ok, pass defence was pretty terrible but not surprising being down 3 out of your top 4 or 5 CBs -Wilson's really, really bad and that alone accounted for a TD and at least one or two big completions -special teams is kinda meh (safety was nice obviously) but at least they aren't bad -Amaro doesn't look as fast to me as other people seem to think he is, but he played well -as much as I am in the "Hill needs to step it up" category I don't think that drop can be 100% on him...still would have been nice to see him hold on to it though -Pryor looked great, involved in a lot of blitzes, there were a few times where he took sort of a weird path and ended up not contributing much but generally he was involved and made a few big hits and plays -I thought Edds looked good again, definitely should at least be a special team guy -unlike past years so far I'm not anticipating a turnover every time we have the ball, especially in the redzone. Geno obviously had one, and it wasn't a good one at all, but last year every time it was an obvious passing play I held my breath in anticipation of something terrible happening. So far that's not the case. There is obviously lots and lots of time for that to change but I hope it doesn't Overall I think any evaluation is going to be hard as there was such a bizarre combination of us playing our 1s against their 2s but us being without our top CBs and having to play Wilson against AJ Freaking Green. That's like lining me up against JJ Watt: It's going to end badly. I definitely wasn't impressed, especially with our 1s, but I think Milliner breaks up or even picks off that TD pass and then our 1s don't look nearly as bad as they did otherwise. Plus you add in Decker and Cumberland, probably Geno's top two targets, and it's a much different look. I'm sure Cincy had some injuries as well so it works both ways, just saying: don't get too bent out of shape at this point. Let's just hope that Milliner is ready for Week 1 or 2 and his injury doesn't nag him all season and things might not be as ugly.
I'm not sure what others expected Amaro to be in terms of speed, but I didn't expect Jimmy Graham. He's a huge target that knows how to navigate open space and if we're lucky, can also catch a consistent number of passes. Some moron recently compared him to Becht. That was a hoot.
