The National Football League doesn't usually pay the act that performs at halftime during the Super Bowl. But in a twist this year, the league has asked artists under consideration for the high-profile gig to pay to play, according to people familiar with the matter. The NFL has narrowed down the list of potential performers for the 2015 Super Bowl to three candidates: Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Coldplay, these people said. While notifying the artists' camps of their candidacy, league representatives also asked at least some of the acts if they would be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the halftime gig. http://online.wsj.com/articles/nfl-to-coldplay-pay-to-play-the-super-bowl-1408465018
Musicians get the shaft when it comes to live gigs. At your local watering hole and now the National Football League. "Pay to Play"... Fuckin asshole NFL. I understand they can get away with it and that there will definitely be bidders so why not? but it still doesn't feel right that they are charging people to do a service for them.
It could end up making them look small. How much are we talking about? $20 million? Nobody pays that. A million? Does the NFL really need a million dollars? What do they say about pigs and slaughter? Maybe not now but you never know what's going to push people over the edge. Fucking Coldplay? Really? _
It's the shit bands like Coldplay that desperately need to notoriety that will end up paying the most. Us fans are the real losers in this scenario. Good musicians aren't going to pay to play.
Gweneth Paltrow will probably ante up so her BF can get some national exposure. Geez I hate that POS band. Wait, they don't post here, do they? _
Wait, it gets worse looooooooool "The deal would not involve upfront payment, but rather the league would get a percentage of post-Super Bowl tour earnings." http://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybr...y-and-others-pay-to-play-super-bowl-halftime/ Goodell has gone batshit crazy, what established musician would ever agree to that. All you're left with is a group of wannabes that nobody will want to see. That will bring down the value and status of the super bowl and cost them money in ad revenue
I very rarely watch the halftime show, but I don't give enough shit about whether some pop star feels that playing a Super Bowl provides them valuable exposure that is worth paying for. you think Eminem and Rhianna didn't pay the Rose Bowl to perform there two weeks ago? it doesn't matter whether you are big or small, if you don't own the venue you pay for the time you need to perform. that's not getting the shaft, that's called needing someone else's space to perform. and the musicians aren't doing a service for the NFL. who do you think benefits more from the half-time show, the performer that gets the exposure of the 100 million people plus that tune in to watch the game and watch the halftime show because they are too lazy to get off the couch at halftime or the NFL? other than the Super Bowl, when else will any musician ever have an audience of 100 million people? fact is performing at the Super Bowl creates invaluable exposure for a musician. whether the NFL's concept that the act should pay royalties from subsequent performances has any merit is questionable. But music sales and downloads that likely multiple after a performance is an obvious tangible indicator that the NFL could argue to the performer that they deserve a cut of, and it would be hard to argue otherwise.
It's one thing to pay to play, it's another to give away equity in your business. There is no way on god's green earth Eminem or Rhianna gave the Rose Bowl a trailer on all their subsequent shows because of a "bowl boost"
the specific compensation is irrelevant when the argument is that simply paying to pay is somehow greedy on the venue owner's part. the Super Bowl is the NFL's venue. it is up to the two parties to decide the specific compensation. obviously renting a space like the Rose Bowl and then proceeding to sell your own tickets will give the two parties different standings to negotiate the deal than the NFL which is the party that has created the built in audience of 100 million viewers that the musician benefits from.
Yeah, yeah I get it.. the performers get a "boost" whatever. i still think its pretty fucked up that the NFL cant be satisfied with making insane profits every year and especially on Super Bowl Sunday they need to request future tour royalties at other venues before they will even consider a performer. I mean- come on.
How about the league's extravagant demands of the host city. Here are just some of the small examples(it's a 153 page list of demands): Free police escorts for team owner Use of Presidential suites at the city's top hotels at no-cost 35,000 free parking spaces All revenue from ticket sales to the game Free curbside parking at the NFL House, a "high-end, exclusive drop-in hospitality facility for our most valued and influential guests to meet, unwind, network and conduct business." Local police dedicated to anti-counterfeit enforcement, provided at no cost Installation of ATM machines at the stadium that accept NFL preferred credit and debit cards, along with the removal of ATMs that "conflict with preferred payment services." Two top quality bowling venues for an NFL celebrity bowling event Portable cell phone towers if they find the service inadequate Free promotional space from local newspapers and radio stations for the "NFL Experience" in the month before the game Creation of "clean zones" around the stadium and the hotel for NFL execs that prevent "certain activities" as well as suspend new and existing permits for those activities Free access to three top golf courses in the months before the game Exemption from state, county and municipal taxes - here's my favorite: the hotels where the teams stay are obligated to televise the NFL Network for a year before the Super Bowl — at no cost to the league. http://www.startribune.com/local/minneapolis/262253921.html Now they are charging their halftime performer for the opportunity to play. is there anything they are paying for??
out of the 3, i hope its katy perry. atleast they are nice to look at for the 5 minutes i am not pissing and grabbing more beer and food.
