Yes you are right. Just hearing my frustration on picking Geno to begin with, never thought he was all that in college. You provided a cogent argument, however, that it is unlikely for a rookie to take us to a SB but I disagree about Vick in SB if he remains healthy. BTW has any rookie started and then gone all the way to SB,? just curious. I hope I am wrong about Smith, I have still have my doubts since his performance against the 1st stringers was meh.
Not saying whoever posted abt Janis isn't doing the hindsight bullsht but I definitely know who Janis is and I read his scouting reports pre draft. I'm sure the jets did too. So yea, it does kind of piss me off a lot that we waste a draft pick on a guy we know we are 99% likely to cut when some good WR picked later are having great camps. Janis was mentioned earlier but one of my favorite players going into the draft was Campanaro went in the 7th to the Ravens and reports are calling him a standout in camp going against first string defense.
The Seahawks also stress the run, rode Marshall Lynch to a SB. Nothing wrong with stressing the run, you have to be able to control the line of scrimmage and wear down the opposition. The issue the jets have is they don't have a passing game to complement the run, it's been their Achilles heel since Rex has been here. Don't know if he is completely at fault, or it's just circumstance that they have not been able to make it work by getting the right QB.
The Jets haven't had a passing game since before Pennington injured his rotator cuff and maybe for some of the games Favre was here. The failure to develop a QB is because we have failed to surround our QBs with talent and not consistently having a quality offensive coordinator. We've fixed the coordinator, now we just need to continue upgrading the talent on offense. If Geno doesn't workout, I hope we give Marty one more shot at developing us a franchise QB.
Eh, I don't mind that the Jets drafted Boyd. 6th and 7th round QBs are a crap-shoot (in 2000 the Patriots considered Tom Brady and Tim Rattay to be equivalent for instance). Sometimes you get lucky (like the Pats did), more often then not they're out of the league in a year or two. So Rex drafted Boyd over other late round/UDFA quality prospects based on his personal familiarity with Boyd...eh, so what. Its not like Rex picked Boyd over third-to-fifth round prospects, just over the other borderline late-round prospects. Now, lets assume Boyd doesn't get any better going forward and Simms at least does nothing to lose the job. If Simms is cut and Boyd is kept, it probably wouldn't matter in terms of wins and losses (as a rule you're sunk if you have to start the third stringer). But it would reek of favoritism. I think Boyd is destined to be cut or put on the practice squad; but Rex has been known to make bad emotionally-based decisions before.
i really like tajh boyd, mark my words he will be better than mark sanchez... wait he can do that just by not playing. either way i said it put it in writing!
Totally agree on Marty. The homers here consider me a darksider, but having Marty is one of the best developments on this team in a long time. I am psyched about it. It doesn't mean that Smith will become a quality Qb, because that's not all about coaching, obviously. But overall the O is and will be much better. I wasn't as down on Schotty as some here, but at the same time I never thought he was particularly good. Marty is that, and he's a great fit with Rex seeing as how Rex is so awful where Marty is good. If Smith fails, it says here Marty should definitely get another shot developing a Qb.
you sure? not saying he won't get cut eventually, but are we sure we want to go into game 4 with Vick taking some snaps? I was thinking Simms and Boyd would take that one for themselves while the jets left their awesome backup in waiting.
you make a good point, and that could factor in. i'd rather just cut him now tho. Vick could use a couple series of work game 4, and have Simms play out the rest. this way we get to evaluate another late round draft pick/bubble player.
I wouldn't even sign him to the practice squad. Waste of a spot, its bad enough Rex wasted a 6th round pick on him. Rex can't evaluate talent or coach up players.
I read yesterday that Simms IS now eligible for the PS. This past offseason the PS was expanded to 10 players, two of which can be players with 1 year of accrued service. Apparently Simms has only 1 year of accrued service so he is PS eligible. I don't think he'll be placed on it, I think he'll make the final cut and be the emergency QB on game days. _
This is basically an attack on anyone who is not a homer. Speaking for myself as a down the middle fan, I'd much rather my expressions of skepticism be wrong, and only my upbeat assessments be right. I would get as much satisfaction as any fan by Jet success, and do not make a single penny being proven right when I was skeptical.
I agree. I have heard the argument for putting the third string Qb on the practice squad, and there is some sense to it. But with Vick being a bit fragile, there's a bigger risk there. I personally recall quite well the day both Pennington and Fiedler went down. In hindsight having to play Bollinger was the same as ending the season. Ending the season's hopes, anyway. Imo Simms is better than Bollinger, fwiw, but beyond that you have to play the game.
