thats just one of the things thats always bugged me about this numbered receiver shit, why can't JK be a #2? because he's known as a slot receiver? they must automatically be something lower if they aren't playing classic X or Z? And what if the best receiver is a Tight End? are THEY a number 1, or 2, or whatever? It just feels like a hollow term that means next to nothing.
who knows - the few plays i have seen of him he reminds me of chrebet - slithery and makes plays. caught a little of the steeler/eagle game last night and watched steeler receivers/returners - archer, bryant and wheaton - all would have been nice picks for us. cant help thinking that the WR heavy drafts of the past couple years really wont benefit us as we may have dropped the ball - again. though some would say its too early to tell with this years picks. i personally dont have much confidence that any of them will amount to much. looks like big ben will have some nice toys to play with on offense.
He might as well be given an opportunity to do so. He's been showing something in TC and preseason and made a couple plays last year. If the team feels Kerley is best suited in the slot and Salas outplays guys like Hill and Nelson, then why not?
I liked the way Nelson came in and contributed last year, but I doubt his ceiling is all that high. We saw alot of him when playing Buffalo, and to my mind while he should be playing, and I don't think the Bills were right to cut him, realistically he does not have any prospect of being a top receiver. He's made what he has of his chances, and it is what it is. Salas on the other hand I knew nothing about before he came to the Jets. Yes he only caught 8 passes, but he was working with a rookie Qb who for the most part was awful. But this is the second year in Marty's system, and the first year Salas has been in camp and pre-season with the Jets. While it's true he has to get it done in the regular season to show he's for real, all reports are that he's had a very good summer with the team. Just maybe he has a higher ceiling than Nelson. I understand he's been around a bit already. But did he really get chances before? I don't know, but if he's given the chance in this O, and Smith doesn't let him down, he just might do it.
It can take years to reform a receivers route running to the point where they can beat cornerbacks in and out of their breaks with precision rather than measurable speed or quickness. Salas seems to possess that nature and has pretty good quickness to go along with it. It seems as though this offense is perfect for him as the Hawaii offense reforms receivers to be sharp route runners and yard after the catch guys. You don't need an insane forty time while being 6'5" to be a successful receiver especially in a timing and rhythm based offense. If the knowledge of how to beat corners is there in terms of foot quickness and how sharply to break and when, then the receiver can be successful.
There also has to be a connection between Geno and who he is throwing to, Last year he had something there with Kerley and Nelson. This year it seems to be with Decker ( Trust Factor ) but but with Salas that is something he is going to have to earn if Geno is going to target him. Hope this does happen cause I really like this kids hands. Time will tell.
Salas and Kerley came out the same year. Salas was drafted ahead of Kerley for a reason. Salas suffered a broken leg mid way through their rookie season, Salas was having a good year before the injury and many of the Rams fans felt he was going to be a future star. The rams fired the coaching staff that year and Salas was not close to 100% when training camp started. He competed but you could tell he lost a step and a half so they traded him to the Pats right before the start of the season shoe was already behind the 8 ball not even knowing the play book. Due to injuries on the Oline he was cut and put on the practice squad. He performed well there and was getting healthy so they brought him back up. During this time other teams tried to pick him up but the pats matched their $ offers, he wanted to stay so he did. Another position of need suffered a injury so they had to cut him, this time he did not clear wavers and was claimed by the eagles. He did well there but coach Kelly wanted to keep his Oregon players ahead of him soothe Jets picked him off their PS. He has recovered from the leg fx and is back to form and if all things are fair he will be the #2 on this team although he is better suited for the slot.
Sky is the limit for Salas in my opinion. He's been moving up the depth chart since the beginning of training camp - now he's slowly carving an integral role on the team. He's a far better option then Stephen Hill at this point, but I don't think he beats Nelson for the #2 job.
A new user with a good first post are hard to find nowadays. Welcome and thanks for the insight on Salas. The kid is only 25 years old so I'm sure he still has upside. Hopefully he contributes.
Not a #2 but definitely a useful depth player. I think he should make the team instead of fuckin Hill.
