I'm looking for someone to explain why Geno's fumble was called a fumble.

I've seen turnovers being reversed because the QB was "giving himself up" and thus the play was dead before ball came out. I've seen the same because the runner's knee was on the ground, making the play dead.

Geno runs and goes down with clear intention to stop the play. His right knee is on the ground before the ball comes out. Why was it called a fumble?

I'm assuming here that the call was correct and I don't understand the rule. Any help?

His knee wasn't down. When it started making contact, the ball was out. /

I don't think so. Maybe someone can post a vid of the play?

Since it was close they stuck with the original call.

The replays in the stadium made it seem like his knee was down..

His knee was down but he wasn't touched by a defensive player yet.

His knee hit just after the ball was knocked loose. Very close. If it were not called a fumble they might have left it alone.

He didn't slide and his knee seemed to be down before being hit. It also was hard to tell if the ball was already out.

It was too close to reverse, knee being down or not. Geno was clearly making an effort to score in a head first direction.

His knee was down and it shouldn't had been a fumble. Once your knee is down and your touch it not a fumble. Even Mike Carey said it wasn't a fumble.

The whole thing kinda added to me being pissed with CBS. Their replay was complete shit.
What I saw was a quick sequence of knee down, then touched by the D, then ball out. It was quick, yes, but I swear I was not subjective looking at it.

Because we are the New York Jets so the other team nearly always gets the benefit of the doubt over us.

His knee was definitely down before the ball came out (And there was contact so he was down by contact). It was close enough that they could just say they can't tell one way or the other so they stuck with the original call.

Also, now based on current review rules, all turnovers and scoring plays are automatically reviewed. As a result, refs are now biasing their calls towards those outcomes so teams get a free review of close plays without having to challenge. Odds are, this bias definitely took place.

It looked like his knee was down then the ball came out, I'd like to see it again but the rule of thumb w/ replay is anything close usually goes against us which is why I despise replay. they waste our team and still don't get many calls correct.

I thought he was down. For whatever reason, the vast majority of the calls went against us in this game.

Geno's knee was down but at that point the view of the ball was obscured by another player.

From a different angle we saw the ball knocked out but couldn't see his knee.

Maybe in the future they could time stamp all cameras and run all angles simultaneously in slow mo for the review official. Until then, calls this close won't be overturned very often.

It was a fumble. A fumble should be a fumble, arguing stupid small rule semantics like if "he gave himself up" and what not is where the NFL gets itself in trouble and makes things into a joke. In real time it was a fumble and after review it was close : thus fumble.

Geno Smith wasn't giving himself up he was lunging for the end zone. As fans we should be more angry about Smith not being more smart there than the call.

It was a fumble and Geno has to stop trying to plow through defenders. In that situation he needs to throw the ball away or go down. Huge, huge mistake that took points off the board. Luckily he did much better with that in the 2nd half.
