Is there any reason why Chris Johnson is not serving these roles on this particular team?:

    1. Slot receiver
    2. Kick returner
    3. Punt returner

I fully understand why he's not in the backfield more often as Ivory definitely runs harder and seems to be doing a pretty good job. And Ivory's even been catching screen passes well (which would seem to be something Johnson was hired to do in this offense). What I can't understand is why Johnson can't run plays out of the slot when we have practice squad guys getting major time in three and four WR sets? Johnson has good hands and is one of the fastest guys in the league - he can't serve a Eric Metcalf role on this team (or I suppose a more modern reference would be Percy Harvin or Amendola)? Our offense is so good that we can't see what he could do in the open field after a five yard slant pass?

And the kick/punt return situation is so bad (Saunders should be cut, imho), are we so sure Johnson couldn't do a better job? Johnson ran kicks back in college; that should be no issue. And I have no idea if they worked him out receiving punts in practice, but if they haven't they should. It just seems like when you have one of the fastest guys in the league, and he has good hands, and you have the worst offensive personnel in the NFL ... he needs to be on the field more.

    Discuss.

I get what you're saying, but I think there's a big concern with him getting injured.. He has been injury prone last few years and I heard that's why they won't wear him out in the backfield And as a slot reciever you have to take some big hits..

As we were duly warned by Titans fans young and old, this simply isn't the case anymore.

You look at the Chris Johnson of today and see Eric Metcalf?? I see no explosiveness at all.

Pretty obvious to me that if he were one of the fastest players in the league, that first pick is not a pick-6.

Its just amazing how much this guy has slowed down. He isnt even that old yet and he already deteriorated. At least Tomlinson lasted till about 30....

We have a speed back we're trying to repeatedly force between the tackles. seems pretty fucking stupid to me but what do I know?

This is a guy that was top 25 in all purpose yards each of the last 3 years. The claims that he is washed up seem premature to me but he isn't getting back there between the tackles.

Chris Johnson injury prone? His durability's been his one saving grace the last few years.

For all his talk though it looks like the naysayers were right about him in Tennessee, he's washed up. And the Jets are making it worse by trying to have him be an inside grinder when that's never been his strength.

I'm coming around to that train of thought too. It certainly looks like CJ's best days are behind him and right now, he looks like the LT that played for the Jets instead of the LT that played for SD. Spurts of greatness spaced between long periods of mediocracy. Again, this FO/CS got caught up trying to catch lightning in a bottle. If CJ had anything left, do you really think the Titans would have let him walk?

    This.

"fastest guy in the league"?!?! It's not 2009. He doesnt even look like the fastest back on the team...... I see no speed, no burst, and not doing a good job following his blockers either. I wish he was LT 2010.
I thought a big part of this team's success would be riding on CJ's performance, but right now I think he should be taking a back seat to Powell.

My bad, you're right. Don't know why I thought he had been injured a lot in Tennessee lol. Guess he just has that aura. Like McFadden.

Well if we lose a few more games CJ wont have to worry about his injuries cause he will be riding the pines getting a nice check.

I don't disagree. CJ can't break an initial tackle running through the line, but I believe he'd still be somewhat effective if we can get him the ball in open space. A starting RB is too valuable to risk as a KR/PR, but if he winds up 2nd or 3rd on the depth chart, he should be considered on special teams, especially KR where he can get a good running start.

I'd also like to see more 2 RB sets. Why continually trot out extra crappy WRs?

He doesnt return kicks anymore because of durability issues. same with playing in the slot.

i think they need to get him out on the edges more. less of these zone read shotgun runs and more tosses and off tackle plays.

He is a bad fit running between the tackles in the Jets scheme.... and he isn't fast enough anymore to break those outside runs.

Even at his best he would have 5 or 6 negative runs a game for those couple of break out runs.

Ivory should get 80% of the touches IMO.

The problem is that his ridiculously aggressive style makes him prone to injuries, so they likely have him on a pitch count.

False. He was never injure prone, in fact he played a whole season on a partially torn meniscus ... Thats very durable, still nearly gaining 1500 yards from scrimmage in the process. Mind you he was the only option and was still highly game planned for.

What durability issues? He's a backup tailback who has missed two games in eight seasons.

You were doing well until this. Anyone suggesting a team cut a first year player after three games who is a developmental player cannot be taken seriously.
