Should we try and get him? http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ould-be-coming-for-calvin-johnson-in-detroit/
Ndamukong Suh may not be the only top-two pick who could soon be bidding Detroit farewell. With Suh, the second overall pick in 2010, poised to hit the open market in March, the Lions likewise could decide to tell Calvin Johnson, the second overall pick in 2007, to hit the road at about the same time. Crazy as it seems, Johnson carries a cap number of $20.558 million into the next league year. While a restructuring that converts, for example, $10 million of his $12.5 million salary into a signing bonus could cut the cap number down to $12.558 million, the maneuver would drive his 2016 cap number of $24 million up to $26 million. At some point, Johnson may have to take less money in order to stick around. If he doesn’t want to do that, the Lions may have to part ways with him. Johnson’s health will be a major factor in the final analysis. While he has missed only seven games in seven-plus seasons, Johnson lately seems to be always injured, always either missing practice or limited. And always questionable to play. Currently, he’s dealing with a chronic ankle injury that may cause him to miss a game or two. No matter good Johnson may be when healthy, at some point the total analysis will point to spending that money elsewhere. The fact that the Lions seemed to be interested in trading up from No. 10 to get receiver Sammy Watkins or receiver Mike Evans and ultimately decided to use that pick on hybrid tight end/receiver Eric Ebron (who has only eight catches for 80 yards this season) suggests that the Lions are at least considering the wisdom of reallocating their dollars away from a guy who is one of the best receivers in league history when healthy, but who isn’t healthy enough often enough to justify a cap number that shoots from $13 million to more than $20 million in less than six months.
dude, if johnson was available, I sign him in a fucking heartbeat. Like, no questions asked, just throw money at him, we got it like that, we can do that. I DOUBT that happens though, him getting released I mean. but man oh man that would be glorious, we can dream...
We'd have the cap space to get him. This is the one benefit of Idzik saving cap space. Getting someone like a Calvin Johnson.
Meh, 3 years ago yes, a year from now, no. Although he can catch anything thrown near him, all those spectacular catches ( and uncontrolled landings) have taken their toll. If we had a team missing one superstar, yes a 1 year deal would be worth it, we're not that team.
I'm moving this to the NFL forum as now he is still a Lion and there is nothing but speculation of him not playing with the Lions
I don't have a problem with bringing him in, he is fun to watch play with his ability. I just don't think bringing him in with this QB, this O-line, this coach, at his age (30 next season) adds much other than occasional entertainment value. 3 years ago Calvin could have made Geno look pretty good, I don't think he still has that ability to overcome the bad QB play we have seen... maybe. Now, if we upgrade some of those other positions, then hell yes. But right now it's spinners on a Yugo. And Idzik ain't spending the money.
Calvin Johnson is more valuable to a team than Darrelle Revis will be. You sign him if you have the chance
I just can't see Calvin Johnson leaving Detroit. And for as good as Suh is I really don't think this team should be looking into acquiring even more defensive line talent when the offensive side of the ball is what sorely needs to be addressed in a major way.
Sign him but he will go where he wants to go, and he will get paid where he wants to get paid. Denver, New England, New Orleans. Id say New Orleans, he's played in the Dome his whole career.....
I'd be a bit shocked if Megatron made it to FA, but if he did, it would depend on who was the GM of this team. Idzik would probably offer him 8 mill per to come here, but Woody would cream his Aquaman underoos for the chance to sign a box office draw like that, injuries or not. The Jets could give the fucker 40mil guaranteed his first year easily, but how long until the obvious shreds of QB talent here frustrate him? No way the guy signs with this team, even if he leaves Detroit. We have a better shot at Dez, and that's a pretty small shot. Midget business.
If your gonna shell out 15 mil+ for a WR then the pecking order should be as follows 1-Demaryius 2-Dez 3-Calvin Age and injuries play a major point. 3 year age difference here.
this shall be coined a dream thread, something bullshit, I think JI will shed the big ones for those who he thinks are WORTH IT. the DRC's of the world are questionable, Megatron? no, he wouldn't be that daft as to underpay him.
The evidence speaks otherwise. I did want to believe he was saving money to spend during a contending year, but where is any evidence that we will contend? What the hell are we looking at?
Id take Dez Bryant over Thomas. Dez has more ability imo, but the off the field issues might be enough to part DT slightly ahead. Either way, any of those recievers are MUCH better than Decker, Sanders, and Tate of last free agency. They will cost more to, but they can wreck games, unlike Decker or Sanders.
