This coach. This team. Wow! Ryan said Vick's response, which drew national criticism, took "guts" and was "exactly what I wanted. http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/sto...hael-vick-qb-said-was-unprepared-week-5-start
I'm at the point where I will never take Rex seriously in any way. I just wish he'd shut his mouth at this point to avoid further embarrassment to this team and organization.
It's not as if that's a particuarly high bar right now (comparing anyone to Geno/Vick). By that premise, Simms should stink too since the same clueless FO/staff deem him good enough to be on an NFL roster. If they're dumb enough to have stooges at QB1 and 2, how would they be smart enough to have this great diamond in the rough on the roster?
Didn't you get the memo? The Jets have been after rough diamonds ever since Woody bought the team. They usually wind up with used cubic zirconium instead though. As far as Simms, stinking or not is relative like you pointed out. This is the team whose brilliant owner once said: "you can never have enough Tebow". Now if that isn't a window into the mind of the man who signs the checks, I dunno what to tell ya. Imagine if Rex had coached a young Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers. History would have been quite different. We as football fans can thank our lucky stars it didn't happen..
Unlike Smith, though, Simms actually improved this past off season. Why not give him a chance now? The reason is that Idzik thought he was smart spending a second round pick on Smith, in whom he is, quite obviously, invested. When he shouldn't be. Smith is playing worse than your average 3rd string Qb, so why not see what the 3rd stringer can do?
Thanks for the clarification, but I think most would have read your post to indicate you were comparing Smith to a bona fide starting Qb. No problem.
It's hard to fathom h0w Rex could possibly have said what he actually said regarding Vick. It's like he legitimately doesn't understand that Vick's admitted lack of preparedness is a direct reflection on him. A few years ago, a guy got cut for admitting that, but Rex actually praises him. It's just fascinating to me. It really is.
A couple of things. It was his second year with the team in camp, and I recall a report that he was more accurate this year. It makes sense he would be, anyway. I know his play during the regular season last year did not blow anybody away. But imo give him a week with the first team, and see what he can do. Why not?
It's really not, if you have been watching this team and listening to Ryan for the last 5 years. Remember, this is the guy that stood at a podium and said that "I've lost the team", saying that he was unable to fulfill the most basic tenent of his job, and somehow was not immediately fired! Try this - on Monday morning, go up to your boss and say "I am and have been unable to meet the basic responsibilites of my job". Let me know how he/she reacts. Rex Ryan is not, and never was, a viable NFL head coach, and he is drifting further and further away from being one every day.
This whole week its like he is lobbying for his next job. It would make sense to discipline Vick if he cared about his job here and legitimately wanted to take a stand to improve the team but he's looking for his next job as such he can't afford to lose the locker room. So he will praise Vick for having guts to admit it and keep the players happy. His "woe is me" stuff this whole week regarding Manning and not knowing how they are going to stop him is lobbying too. He's saying we don't have the players to compete without actually talking bad about the players or blaming the front office.
I could be wrong, but if things end really badly this year, I don't see him getting another HC job right away.
See, this is the problem with not starting Vick earlier. Because, once the season is lost, why play Vick at all? You are either going to ride Geno for the rest of the year no matter what, OR, if you just can't stand looking at Geno anymore, you are going to throw Simms in there and say 'fuck it.' This is why Vick should have been given a full week of first team reps and started the San Diego game.
If we lose this week, which I fully expect, I'm all for putting Simms in. I have an extremely negative opinion of Smith and don't believe he'll ever be a good NFL QB. At least Simms has a monster arm that if he can learn to harness and throw with some finesse could be dangerous.
