Two years into the "rebuild" and Idzik does not have a coach or a quarterback. Does the guy have a 7-year plan?
Actually, this is a sensible idea. For "What did we [rebuild] during the past years??" folks, this is what I have to tell you: 1. Jets are almost fully out of T-Bomb cap hell. A lot of [Albatrosses] (i.e. David Harris) become a very manageable cap hit if they do decide to cut them. 2. They had experimented with Geno - and it looks like that experiment has failed. They will have to look elsewhere. No harm done. This team wasn't going anywhere before finding a QB anyway. 3. Some cornerstones are in place - the DL will dominate the league for years to come. ==================================================================== So this is what lies ahead: 1. Find the legitimate QB prospect. This can't be stressed enough. It's that important. 2. Revamp OL. 3. Then find #1 receiver and #2 TE - and maybe a heir for Chris Ivory. 4. As for defense: Find LBs - both OLBs and ILBs. Either through FA or draft. 5. Find secondaries. I expect the whole problems would be addressed within 2 year timeframe.
But this is what we've needed for the last 2 years, nothing has been fixed. And we're likely to have more needs moving forward.
1. Try fixing the holes while in cap hell and tell me how that goes. Getting out of the cap hell mess is the #1 mission achieved. That's no small feat. Okay? Jets ARE out of cap hell. "Nothing has been fixed" is an understatement. 2. QB is a crapshoot - so you had better load up on your quivers, because you will need to shoot a lot of arrows in that direction. Jets shot twice, and failed twice thus far - once through their mismanagement, second because that QB is an utter retard. 3. in 2009, Jets manned the likes of Sione Pouha and Mike DeVito for the DL, with Bryan "Cactus" Thomas at LB. LB spot is still a problem area, but Sheldon Richardson and Damon Harrison are a serious upgrade over the past - and you are saying NOTHING HAS BEEN FIXED? Look. Was Rome built overnight? Apparently so in your universe.
The problem is that some fans here just want to whine and let out their frustrations without actually using their head at all. When the going gets tough, some people try to analyze the situation, figure out the problems, and then fix them, while others just want to find scapegoats. This is where these geniuses who want to bench Geno after 1 year or fire Idzik after 1.2 years are coming from. And then when the next QB and GM fails to meet their inflated expectations, they will become the scapegoat, and so it goes. If you ever tried to do anything in the real world, you'll know that anything beyond trivial shit is very hard to get done. People very often fail. Some of the most successful people out there have failed many times before and after finally succeeding. I read this thing about FDR where during the 30s, he tried something like 100 different things to fight the depression, and half of them failed. But he kept trying, and the other half eventually dragged the country almost all the way out. That's why I don't understand why people are so mad at the Jets right now, when them sucking this year is mostly the result of past problems and bad luck. I'd claim that Idzik's first two years here have been as unlucky as any I've ever seen. Last year, the Jets WAAAY overperformed , but it just screwed him over in many ways, leading to lower draft picks (while still missing the playoffs), leading to unrealistic expectations this year, leading them to resign Rex, who I personally think is not a good fit for a young rebuilding team. Solid draft picks that anyone could objectively like have in a lot of cases not worked out, like Pryor (so far), Milliner, Geno, McDougle, Winters. All the injuries, most at our weakest positions. The brutal schedule custom made to target our weakest positions. And then of course, just having to deal with a team that a couple of years ago was a bunch of talentless, aging veterans in cap hell. I think at some point, things will turn around. And until then, I'd much rather have the FO build things the right way, through drafting and signing quality FAs on good deals, rather than the popular way many fans want, throwing money at overpriced free agents, which never works out if you are genuinely interested in winning a championship, and not just being an also ran.
WTF are you talking about? Mike Devito was and is a stud. Look at how much the Chiefs improved with his help since they went 2-14 the year before they acquired him. He was the # 1 free agent that Idzick needed to retain (no one realized how good Matt Slauson was until later) and our GM failed to retain him. Sheldon Richardson cost us a first round pick (the only decent pick of the Idzick era) and is at best a slight upgrade over Devito who I think made the pro bowl last year. No arguements about Harrison though, he was a good find. Of course we signed him a year before our new GM cam aboard.
What a low football IQ post, devoid of facts and tooting the horn of a man who has gotten off to an awful start in 2 years of assembling a football team. Overall. His drafting, cap management and personnel decisions have been poor. If Idzik is fired at the end of this season he will never again get hired as a GM in the NFL. Not much more needs to be said.
I would to tell the orginal poster to stop drinking. This team could have patted with 4 million for another wide receiver. This gm has not filled s single hole in this team and has created 2 more holes. Poor drafting c a n not be excused period 4 players cut from this year's Draft is excusable? throwing away the year without improving the roster do you own c I achieve and ass fucking the fans in the p recess is good? Fans like you may deserve this hit mess but most people deserve better. As for signing an elite fa wrote next yr, really with what. 21 milli I n savings from thus year go to the ol10to 12 mill to wilk. 4 to 6 million for dDraft p I cjs. So with a cap raise you have 10 million to spend.
The problem is there is no plan in place. If the Jets were building towards something then I'd be fine with taking the lumps along the way. Yet there is absolutely zero plan in place from a personnel perspective (Idzik), an in-game perspective (Ryan) and all other coaching and staff decisions (Idzik, Ryan, MM). The Jets haven't improved. They may have better personnel on the roster (marginally), however the product on the field still sucks and is going in circles. This thing is so toxic and dysfunctional right now it's not funny. The only chance at ever fixing it...Blow it all up and start fresh! Woody owns this franchise and this mess. He has a chance to make it right by hiring a football guy to rebuild the whole thing. Does Woody make it happen, or does he miss this golden oppty. to put this franchise on higher ground?
The theory behind this idea is fine. There has been very little to show that the practice is actually working. Rebuilding doesnt work if the pieces used to build arent effecive.
Except part of the "rebuild" is also drafting players. How well has Idzik done on that front? Draft well and maybe we don't have as many holes that you rationalize as simply being inherent because it is year 2 of the Idzik era. You kind of have to ignore that to defend your argument.
Right, I don't buy into the idea that Idzik has "a plan" in the sense his defenders mean it. Was it his plan to have such a weak set of CB's? If so, why did he try and sign DRC? He also went Cb with the ninth pick in the 13 draft, and saw that player struggle mightily last year. We saw him let Revis go that off season, concededly probalby on Woody's order. Now he STILL has a hole at Cb, really two, so has seen the situation deteriorate greatly. Qb was a mess when Idzik got here. It still is. And does not look to get better any time soon. There are more holes on the team since he first came. That is not a sign of a GM getting it done.
Good point. Bad teams tend to stay bad unless they make changes. In the NBA, it is what is known as being a lottery team. The jets, raiders and jags are the nfl equivalent. Rex has not had a winning record the past 3 seasons and the jets are well on their way to a 4th. ENOUGH ALREADY THAT REX IS SOME KIND OF GENIUS--HE IS WITHOUT A CLUE.
Defensive Line (Richardson Defensive ROTY) WRs (Decker, big money deal) TEs (Amarao, second round selection) S (Pryor, 1st round selection) Fixed the cap issue Sure, milliner is going to go down as one of the worst picks in team history, so thats a big strike against idzik. but he did hit big on richardson, got a huge return on revis, and added a couple pieces on offense. Next year we add antoher WR in free agency or the draft, maybe go after a QB or CB and we are one step closer. Also, we are in great shape to retain wilkerson long term.
Yes, i think Idzik was fine going into this year with terrible CBs... its a throw away year. He really didnt go after DRC all that hard. if he could get him at a decent price, he'd have taken him. idzik not paying idiotic money to DRC is one of the best moves idzik has made here. especially with DRC not really looking all that great. we still have 2 years to fix CB before we ar ein a spot to compete anyhow. no reason to go crazy and overspend on anything
So with 20 draft picks including 3 first rounders we've added 4 players in two years. Interestingly, that's also the same number of 2014 draft picks we've already cut. At that rate we might have a solid group of starters by 2023 or so, but that's assuming we hold onto every guy that pans out. This doesn't seem like he's "built" very much so far to me. The cap fix is nice but that was largely planned by the previous GM. Next year is a make or break year for Idzik IMO - he has the cap space to make some moves. I think it's too soon to judge Idzik but I also can't pretend like I'm impressed by what he's done so far. It's been extremely underwhelming.
i think the biggest problem with this board is they can't judge draft picks, which is why idzik supporters will never win the argument bill parcells said you lose a game for every rookie you start. they are playing a completely new game compared to college and it takes a year to get used to it
