I think it's funny that you dispute their yards passing against being last by claiming teams need to pass against them to catch up and then turn around and also claim that their 3rd ranked run D encourages teams to pass on them. Shouldn't your logic lead you to think that their run D being ranked 3rd is due to teams abandoning the run in order to play catch-up? Point being, you can twist these stats/rankings around to make whatever argument you want to make. I don't think most of you have watched many Cardinals games to say for sure.
The problems are beyond one individual player. It's the scheme too. Rex's blitz packages have caught up with him. The entire league knows what he's doing. I don't accept your injury alibis for Cro's poor play last season. All NFL players have injuries. He wasn't just beaten regularly but beaten bad. There wasn't a lot of complaining after he got cut. But he gets two picks in a game and all of the second guessers come out.
Dude, their run D being good is not inconsistent with teams also having to pass on them to catch up. This is not a binary choice. And I saw the Cards stop the Dallas running attack cold which at that point was perhaps the best in the league. I made my arguments for why the secondary is about tenth in the league. That's the main point here.
I thought it was common knowledge among Jet fans, certainly it was around here last season, that Cro was hampered by injuries last year. And I was against letting him go at the beginning of last off season, as were some others. Not sure what you are talking about there.
The mods are really asleep at the switch not changing the title (or at least adding OLD THREAD in the title) every time it gets bumped.
So Cro just magically started playing better for no reason this year? It was obvious he was hurt. Look at how he was the previous years and this year. Im not sure where youre coming from on this....
Look there weren't that many top FA cornerbacks available last year. The Jets didn't sign any of them but come on now, there was plenty of competition. The guy they really wanted Vontae Davis re-signed with the Colts. The Giants signed DRC because he wanted to play for the Giants. They didn't go after Verner. They released Cro. The owner wouldn't re-sign Revis. Patterson was next on the list and they signed him. The plan was for Milliner to be their top corner. He's out for the year. They drafted two DBs out of their first 3 selections. The position wasn't neglected. Rex's defense is loaded with top draft picks. WTF does he want!
I haven't seen Cro play this year but I did last year. If he was so injured then why did he even suit up. It's part of the business. And btw. I really doubt he's been that good this season either. We didn't hear a word about him until those two picks.
Just because you havent heard anything doesnt really mean much, no offense. The guy was a top 5 corner rated by PFF before the Denver game and i believe he is still top 8 or top 10 at this point.
There were at least 8 better than anything we have put on the field all year and that would have included Milliner too.
I don't agree. Who are the 8? Plus Patterson was ok. As for Milliner he looked good at the end of the the season. But still unproven. Again signing one corner wouldn't have made a big difference plus look at DRC: he's always injured, too.
Verner, DRC, Vontae Davis, Revis, Cromartie, and im sure there is a few more. All better options then what Idzik came up with. DRC did get hurt but there is nothing to say for sure he would of been hurt if the Jets got him. One good month doesnt make up for being the worst cornerback in the league the other 12 weeks and getting benched 3x.
You're mentioning the exact same guys I did. And you're in competition with 31 other NFL teams for players. The Jets did put a bid in for Davis but he re-signed with Indy. Now if he had signed with the Jets would you say Idzik did a good job? Plus it was down to two teams for DRC and he signed with the Giants. Maybe the Jets didn't like Verner and obviously not Cro. Patterson was a decent signing. He was injury prone but when on the field a good player. btw again DRC has been injured all season for the Giants. Plus they just put Prince on IR. Now are you going to say that the Giants didn't adequately prepare at CB because their two best players were injured.
Patterson was a shitty signing. A guy who has maybe played 1 full season his entire career and youre banking on that guy to stay healthy? Like i said before, whats to say DRC gets hurt if the Jets sign him? No one knows that for sure and Idzik half assed his offer and he went across town. You can take a chance on an injury prone player if you have a replacement or if the guy opposite of him is solid and normally healthy. You cant bank on TWO injury prone players staying healthy all year. $100.00 says whoever the Giants have for backups outplay the stiffs that Idzik has on this team now. Idziks awful decisions is why he will be gone this offseason.
Why should DRC sign with the Jets when he prefers the Giants. Plus he wanted to play with Antoine Rolle. Patterson didn't work out but at the time was a good signing. If healthy he can play the position. You don't have to sign the top free agent at every position. I'm watching the Browns now and they're winning with no name players. Btw the scrap heap corners signed by Idzik aren't that bad and guys like Adams would be playing for other teams. Corners are dropping like flies because this is the National Injury League.
Do you really think Rex is using the same schemes this year as last year? Let alone three or four years ago? Everybody seems to be playing out of position, and guys are compensating for weakness and playing roles that they shouldn't. See Calvin Pryor or Sheldon Richardson when he is dropping back into coverage for examples.
Excellent post. pcl in full FO homer mode refuses to acknowledge the obvious. And regarding the bolded part what you are really saying, obviously, is that one SHOULDN'T bank on that. Idzik had 3 cb's intended for the roster who had injury histories - Milliner, Patterson and McDougle, but of course even if McDougle stayed healthy, as a 3rd round pick he was unlikely to make a major contribution this season. The fact that Idzik left the team with a shitty cb roster should really be beyond debate.
