I got this scenario in my head where we draft MM but bench him and Geno wins the job in august as we ride him till his wheels fall off past thanksgiving. Smith should have every bit a chance to beat rookie MM and some off the streets vet QB, in fact I bet he does just that if thats how things fall. how long he'll last is another question all together, but there should be little worry over what happens to smith if we draft a QB,he'll get what he earns. best case scenario we feel the wonderful problem of having 2 viable QB's on roster. worst case scenario we find out smith is what we thought he was and have a vet on a 2 year ready to spell our 6th overall pick if need be.
I could certainly see the scenario where MM falls to us but it all really has to do with 2 things.; 1-While yes, the Titans are horrible defensively but if they have MM rated as a franchise QB you just can't afford to pass that up. 2- If MM gets past the Titans I can see a scenario where teams jump over us to grab him
Read some real scouting on Mariota, not your own brainwashing. The guy is Mark Sanchez 2.0. The comparison is almost identical. I know you have a crush on Mariota, but you need to understand that great college players don't always turn into great pro players.
Who the fuck are you again? I've been watching Mariota for 3 years now, I don't need to read anything about him. And your comparison to Sanchez is laughable. And every once in a while, great college players DO turn into great pros. It's not often, it's usually the really shitty college players that turn into great pros. Carry on troll. _
Exactly the point, thanks for agreeing with me. Passing on a brilliant player this year because "we can just go get our franchise QB in 2016 or 2017" is moronic. _
Instead of telling people to go read some scouting reports that you have probably read why don't you quote those scouting reports and justify that inane comparison you just made because on the surface this post sounds like lazy bs
Why are you asking me who the fuck I am? Because you post more than I do? And to the other post: It may seem lazy, but it's a busy day at the office. So apologies for not writing well-thought-out posts while skimming this forum during my cubelunch. Before I leave for the day, I will post a link to the review I am speaking of: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/futures/2015/futures-oregon-qb-marcus-mariota .. Sorry if my opinion was so offensive to you guys, I guess this is only a "discussion forum" only when we agree with the forum nazi with over 10,500 messages in less than two years.
You didn't offend me I just found your earlier post to be kind of aggressive without substance to back it up, when I get done wrestling these alligators I'll take a look at your link objectively
I saw this same article also, don't feel discouraged in what you believe in - I thought that link when I originally read it had some great arguments in regards to the comparisons. Maybe people should read the article and present to you WHY the information is incorrect.
That was actually a pretty good article. It pointed out both his positive and negatives (with video evidence), so it doesnt come off as crazy biased in either direction. He's very elusive and has very nice touch on his passes. Some of those throws he made off the play action were beautiful. I thought the article undersold Mariota's athleticism though. I think he's closer to Kaep speed than he is to Alex Smith/Nacho. Its nice to hear about how hard of a worker he is and how intelligent he is. Doesnt seem like the kind of guy who will make headlines for misconduct like his main competition come April could. If Mariota fails in the NFL, it will be because of his on field ability. It wont be because of his work ethic. I thought the Sanchez and Rodgers comparisons were silly. I've been comparing him to a quicker Alex Smith for a while. Like Smith, like he wont make too many mistakes, but I'm not sure he'll make the great plays you expect from a franchise QB. But I thought it was good to point out that he had some issues just throwing the ball away. I like the mentality of wanting to make a play, but you need to be smart enough to realize when one isnt there. Like the author said, Mariota was a pair of good hands away from a redzone interception. Besides the possibility of throwing an INT, he was pretty close to getting hit hard. Those kind of hits are what turns you into RG3. And the same negative we've been talking about for months. Can he be a professional QB? Can he play from inside the pocket? Seems like most of his best throws come from escaping the pocket and making something out of nothing. That is a great skill, at times. He needs to be able to play from within the pocket as well. That part scares me a lot. Disclaimer: Only showing one game of his hurts this analysis a little bit. It would be nice if they showed a bit more video evidence from other weeks.
Stopped reading your post right there. Please explain to me how they are, in any way, similar. Sanchez-1 yr starter with pretty good numbers (08': 3207 yds, 34/10 TD/INT) Mariota- 3 years starter with great numbers every year except 12' when he was just pretty good. (12': 2677 yds, 32/6 TD/INT. 13': 3665 yds, 31/4 TD/INT. 14': 4454 yds, 42/4 TD/INT) Those are just their passing numbers too. Now for the rushing stats and this is where your comparison becomes even more bizarre. Sanchez ran for a whopping 16 yards and 3 TD's in his lone season as a starter(08'). Mariota ran for 752 yds, 5 TD's in 12', 715 yds, 9 TD's in 13', and 770 yds, 15 TD's in 14'. So again, how are they similar at all?? The only way your statement makes sense is if you believe Mariota will become a quarterback that is just as good as Sanchez, but they are nothing alike in terms of actually playing the game of football.
The reason why I'm asking you who the fuck you are is because I've never seen you post before and the first two efforts I've ever seen were directed at me and were dooshy, unnecessarily snarky and completely devoid of any substance. Your Sanchez comparison just cemented my view of you as a troll not worthy of my temperance. It wasn't until after I pointed out what a dick you were being that you decided to post a link to one of a hundred scouting reports on Mariota that are all over the map depending on one's agenda. If I gave a shit about your opinions I'd post a link to a glowing scouting report suggesting Mariota is possibly the greatest QB prospect ever. But I'm not going to do that because (i) until I get a better sense of who the fuck you are, I don't feel the need to argue against your baseless opinions and (ii) I don't need scouting reports to make an accurate assessment of what I think of Mariota. I started watching Mariota midway through his freshman year, I've seen virtually every game he's played in televised broadcasts and tapes of others and I've been touting being in a position to draft Mariota for 2 plus years. I watch a lot of college football and there are just a few QBs I've been as impressed with in many years. Doesn't mean I'm right, but that's my own opinion so don't give me any of your snarky bullshit about reading "real" scouting reports. If you don't like my opinion or if you want to whine about the number or scarcity of post counts or be butthurt because I didn't appropriately value your baseless, unsubstantiated and snarky opinion, I'll ask again. Who the fuck are you? _
Alex Smith is not a franchise QB. If this is the comparison, then I would be kind of scared also. The Rodgers, Eli comparisons are funny. Mariota is not a guaranteed hit. Some believe he is just that. We shall see in due time, hopefully he's there @ 6.
Agreed. If you told me that we would be getting an Alex Smith clone, I dont think anyone would take him in the top half of the first round. Probably a day 2 pick. Having said that, I think Mariota has a ton more upside than Alex Smith does. Granted, Smith has zero upside at this point.
Rodgers wasn't a guaranteed hit, he was the 2nd QB drafted in 05' and slid to 24th. I'm not saying Mariota is going to be Rodgers, but it certainly isn't out of the realm of possibility.
Oh yeah absolutely, I think Mariota has far more confidence in his arm then Alex Smith ever did - Mariota might not be able to make every throw, but he's absolutely willing to try. Sure, if we sit him for 2 or 3 seasons maybe he'll become a 1/2 of what Rodgers is today. It's definitely not out of the realm that it happens. It's tough to evaluate Mariota as a prospect.
I want to sit him for, at least, a year. I don't think he's a guy you can plug in right away and be successful. I agree that it's tough to evaluate him as a prospect, which is why he's receiving such a wide range of comparisons. Vince Young, Nacho, Kaep, Wilson, Alex Smith, and even Rodgers just to name a few. I hope we draft him so we can see which of these he becomes.
