I know I'm not the TGG expert in the history of every Jets player, but even I know Namath can't possibly be the best Jets player on offense ever. His passing statistics are nothing to write home about, and he didn't even have a winning record. Yes he won a SB, and was a very good QB, but you can't be bias towards QB in the decision for best player on offense ever for the Jets. IMO, it HAS to be Martin. On defense I say Revis, but I'm only 26. So that explains that.
Offensive player - Joe Namath Defensive player - Joe Klecko - could have been Gastineau if he hadn't stopped playing so early in his career
Offense: Curtis (and it's not even close) Defense: I'm going to say Shaun Ellis. Yes of course there's Revis. But Ellis was so good so consistently for this team and played such an integral role for years. Consistency is king. I struggle to call Revis our best defensive player in franchise history considering the contract shenanigans and that he won a SB with the Patriots as a gun for hire. BC I think if you bring Revis into the mix then John Abraham should come into play too.
Ellis played for the Patsies too...and woulda come back too.... if we paid him. Negative on the Ellis, lol. Lotta guys ahead of him....Here's just one: Joe Klecko. In the years before Revis got hurt he was an all time great player. Revis is a HOFer. Changing teams and contracts has nothing to do with how great he was when he was here.
I don't agree. Ellis did goto the Patsies but after a tenure as a franchise lynchpin and at the very tail end of his career. Sure there are others like Klecko, but it's just my opinion. Revis is HOFer but the situation is entirely different IMO. Changing teams and the cause for changing teams is quite relevant and not the same as Ellis at all.
Won a Super Bowl is good enough reason for me. His stats are difficult to compare to today's game. We all know that. He is responsible for a huge historic moment of the NFL accepting the AFC as an equal. He was a trendsetter, an original Jet, not signed as a free agent or traded for - that is what gives him the appeal he has. But then again, all that said, I never really see why people need to have this fixation for "The Best." Too many circumstances, different teams, different era, etc..... Curtis is as much a favorite of mine as Namath, Klecko, Maynard, to just name a few. I can't get hell bent over who is the best. There is no answer to that. No one is right, but no one is wrong.
I almost feel sorry for anyone who didn't get to see Klecko play. He was the heart & soul of the Jets in the 10 years he played. And if you didn't get to see him with your own eyes, read what the guys he played against said about him. Shit...he went to the Pro Bowl in three different positions. He did whatever the team asked of him...and some of those teams were pretty crummy. And he did all that on some pretty fucked up knees...
Ellis? He was consistently above average to average. I don't think he was ever the best player on the Jets defense for any season, or even let alone the best defensive lineman. I would put many players ahead of him as the best Jets defensive player. Klecko, Revis, Philbin, Mehl, Lewis, Gastineau, Abraham, Lyons, Grantham, Buttle, Glenn, Hasty, Green, Clifton, ………….
Bruce Harper and Wesley Walker on offense... Klecko and Revis on defense. Honorable mentions: Big Chris Jenkins, Johnny Hector, Freeman McNeil.
We should start having crossword puzzles ,I love the spring and summer but man do offseason threads suck
