You're not the first to suggest that, in fact I believe thats one explanation for the awful 3 pick game. that he HAD to force the ball, or maybe he poorly timed the plays or refused to check down or run, its hard to say. he may have been hindered by an offense that forced itself to be as premeditated and conservative as possible because he didn't earn the trust to run things freely… that was about as earned as it was counterintuitive. Geno wasn't and may never be all world, but I believe an offense is better served not pulling the plug on an entire element of their O as a method of turnover control… it just nerfs any offensive production. edit: exhibit A! the miami game where we threw barely at all, stupid, left us one dimensional, was not a solid method of developing a QB, pointless.
Oh, he definitely holds onto the ball too long at times and stares down his WRs too. Those were two things that he did in college that I said if he's going to be good in the NFL, he needs to get those fixed. Holding onto the ball too long are things he would do in HS and college and eventually one of his WRs would get open and he'd make a big play. Probably a hard (bad) habit to break though. I can't say for sure because I'm not Geno, but I believe that on quite a few of his INTs that he was expecting the WR to come back to the ball, but the WR just sat back and waited on it while the DB came back and picked it off. That was one thing that his WRs in college were very good about. The same thing goes with some jump balls. Stedman Bailey wasn't the tallest WR, but Geno could throw jump balls to him all day long and 9 times out of 10 he would come down with them. There haven't been too many times over the last couple years that a Jets WR would do this. But if Decker, Kerley, and Marshall can stay healthy and the Oline plays decent, there will be nobody to blame but Geno (even for us Geno supporters).
I view that as his main weakness, and it was evident in college too as you said as well. Some of the throws he tried to make, he made a second late resulting in a hit and eventual interception. That throw to Sudfield in the Packers game I believe is a great example.
This is Geno's last chance.. I am all in for Geno and believe in him, because I really don't want to start from square 1 again with a new QB... 3rd year with plenty of weapons, an offense catered to his playing style.... This guy should fucking kill it... If he is still doing the same shit by Week 6........ The Petty era begins.
If Geno is a failure the Jets will draft a QB next year. The odds on Petty becoming the guy are probably 100-1. Not that the Jets won't look at him hard but he came from a spread in college and he was a 4th round pick and the combo suggests he's just going to get that look before they go get somebody who can play QB in the NFL.
The only problem is, we are not going to be picking anywhere near the Top 10 next year, and we will need to be Top 5 to get a franchise QB.. This defense is going to keep us in every game, and I see an 8-8 season at minimum... Geno better be our guy.
I find it impossible to see Smith on this basis. BELIEVE in him because you don't want the Jets to have to start over... I mean you can say it would be nice not to have to start over. But to say that one can BELIEVE in him, be ALL IN on him, and in effect that other Jet fans should feel the same, because it is convenient? That it not a persuasive argument. More subtance based is the notion that he will have better players around him. Two problems here. First is yeah, like any Qb would be playing better with better players around him. What does that prove? Second is I don't think the problems he has had in the past have been the fault of other players on the team. We can debate that all day, but Smith Fans just end up running down all the other players on O and the OC, which imo is not really a justified approach. Changing the OC and the overall style of the O is another one. As if the old CS was purposely and obtusely forcing him to play a style that was obviously not suited to him - uh, no. That is not what was going on. Sure Gailey might do better. But here's the thing - there is no track record of him having better success with Smith than Marty did. So at best we are, again, talking hope here, not substance. For these reasons I am not all in on him.
I think Geno's problems are two fold.. I am not going to sit here and say he doesn't make some bonehead mistakes because he deff does, and that is not the fault of the players around him that is his fault.. At the same time, he has had a moron for an OC who doesn't put him into positions to succeed all the time. Geno needs to be eased along and the way to do that is to run the football, which in turns opens up everything else... Geno doesn't need to be throwing for 30+ times a game it is not necessary. He has also had a who's who corp of WR's his first two seasons with the exception of Decker and Kerley.. This year that unit should be much more stable and this will help tremendously. You are right this is all hope at this point. He has to get his shit together and fast.
We don't need a guaranteed guy at the top of the draft to pick a QB. If Geno is a failure the Jets will pick a QB who makes the 1st round cut in the 1st round next year. Chad Pennington was the 18 pick. Drew Brees was the 32 pick. Ben Roethlisberger was the 11 pick. Aaron Rodgers was the 24 pick. Joe Flacco was the 18 pick. If you're not in it you can't win it and I'm fairly sure the Jets will go QB in the 1st round next year if Geno is a flop again. The only guy in the list above that the drafting team was overjoyed to get was Roethlisberger, who had been a top 3 or 4 consensus pick that fell due to off the field issues. Everybody else was a case of "welp, we don't have a QB and we have to find one and so we're going to pick a guy we think fits and hope it works out."
I find this a lot more agreeable than the Bucky Brooks article http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000498380/article/making-the-leap-no-19-jets-qb-geno-smith
"we need to ease him along by running the football" We ran the ball 507 times last year(4th most in the NFL) for 142 yards a game (3rd in the nfl) at a 4.5 yard per carry clip (6th in the NFL). im not sure we can run the ball more or do more with the run to make life easier for geno. "he doesnt need to be throwing 30 times a game" He threw over 30 times just 5 times in 14 games last year. he isnt exactly airing it out. this notion that we are putting too much on his shoulders does not have alot of merit.
and those five times came in the first 7 games (you know, when we werent completely out of the picture), one of which he was benched at half time ... in those 6 full games, he avg almost 36 attempts per game
I haven't had time to read this thread recently, so someone else may have posted this already. But if not, you may want to read this....of course it's all speculation until they start playing games, but it sure does sound good! http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000498380/article/making-the-leap-no-19-jets-qb-geno-smith
I think Geno has been slightly better than Sanchez over his first two seasons. The link means little to me. It's off-season filler material. Geno has one more chance to step up his game. If not, Fitz will step in and play well.
I agree, but it's still fun to read what others are saying about him (at least for me). As a Jets fan, I like reading good things about my team, even if they are just one man's opinion.
