I was wondering, since cro has been burnt toast all camp long if Skrine would get some outside reps. I know some people are saying he's a vet and it's hot Cro is reserving his body blah blah blah... it's affecting Geno's growth if he is. I'm worried for Cro though bc i'm not buying that BS excuse as to why he's been giving up big plays to almost anybody that stepped in front of him this camp.. I can't stomach another 2013 performance from Cro.. i want what i seen in AZ last year.. hope he shows up. But if for some reason 2013 Cro was to show up this year.. i'd rather stick Skrine on the outside and put Milliner at the nickle... even be willing to let Cro run some FS. Of course Cro's will to tackle will have to increase but i think he'd be deadly with his size in speed playing FS.
I wouldn't expect too much from Cro. He's not the guy who years ago had that terrific season for us and locked his side of the field down. Those days are long gone. In his final year or even two years with us he was garbage (first year I guess people are gonna use injuries as an excuse), and after that even with the Cardinals he was wildly inconsistent. That's what he is. He wasn't that good with the Cardinals, but Bowles just had a great defense there and a great backfield that really worked well together. He got toasted plenty of times with the Cards but he also made enough plays to appear on ESPN on a regular basis. I don't buy these other excuses people come up with, how he's taking it easy and whatnot, how he's not giving 100%, that's BS in my opinion. Watch him react when he gets toasted, he's livid. If he can't stick with receivers in the first couple games, if he becomes a liability, he should be benched immediately. Marcus Williams and Skrine are starters. Skrine can be a bit of a headache with his flags so I think he's better as a nickel corner but Marcus Williams from what we've seen last season and especially this year he's got legit starting corner skills. And then you still have Dex but he needs a lot of snaps to get his feet wet, he also got burned quite often in camp while still making plays. But that's expected, he's only gonna get better.
I feel you 100% bro. I guess all this CB depth is a great problem to have. Only thing is with the money Cro's getting this year i'm sure we almost have to find some use out of him. I'm not too sold on Gilchrist cover skills, how would you feel about throwing Cro in at FS from time to time?
That's the issue. I mean Bowles likes him, he trusts him for whatever reason so he's gonna start no matter what for the entire year I believe, unless he really gets embarrassed on a weekly basis. Cro isn't that bad, plus he always makes up for bad plays with gamechanging turnovers, picks 6's and all that stuff. If it were up to me I would just bench him after 3-4 games if he struggles a lot and keeps playing the way he does now. I hear you with the safety switch but Cro isn't the most instinctive player in the league so I don't know if he could pull that off. He's good in man coverage but he doesn't have much awareness, zone coverage isn't his strength, he's not good at seeing things and reading QB's and anticipating throws and reading routes and all that. He'd probably get burned a lot and take the wrong angles, bite on pumpfakes, double moves etc. if he were to play safety. That's just how he strikes me. If they tell him "don't let that guy catch a deep ball" then he'd probably excel in that situation. But if he plays FS full time and he has to decide who to cover and what the offense is trying to do on every snap I think that's probably too much for him to handle. Gilchrist doesn't have the same speed or size but from what we've heard he sounds extremely smart and he understands offenses, he understands zone and man coverage, he seems like a great leader. Not a flashy guy like Ed Reed, he's not gonna have 15 picks this year, but he's consistent and doesn't make a lot of mistakes. He played a lot in SD last year, I think like 500 snaps at FS and 500 at nickel corner so he's somebody you can count on.
Geno kinda has that going for him. He's miles away from Sanchez in that regard. Smith will come back and throw a TD after an INT. Sanchez just looked so butt hurt all the time and when it rained, it poured.
Really really liking Marcus Williams. Convinced that from last year's play alone, - he's shown he can play at this level. Haven't seen or heard anything bad about him at this camp. Considering his youth (just turned 24), - he's grasped a lot & must still have serious upside left to tap into. UDFA that we got from Houston. Here's to hoping he's the next Snacks Harrison, and doesnt end up like Danny Woodhead (i.e. ---- on someone else's team).
If the HC was anybody but Rex I'd expect Cassel to come out ahead and win the job just due to his experience and the fact that all 3 are pretty bad. With Rex it could easily be Tyrod Taylor, just because Rex has a feel for him.
rex is such a retard about offense. I saw he also has harvin working in at cb, so they've got that going for them.
"The New York Jets have one of the most intriguing quarterback competitions in the NFL and head coach Rex Ryan has said that he will take his time when it comes to naming a starter at the position. However, when the team announced their first depth chart of the season, it was both Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith that were atop the depth chart. That’s right. Ryan named Sanchez and Smith as co-starters. There is no one listed as the No. 2 quarterback, while Greg McElroy is listed at No. 3 and Matt Simms comes in at No. 4. You can see their initial depth chart here."
I don't think we're looking at "#1,#2,nickel,dime,etc" from this secondary .I think it'll be more of a match-up thing. Goodness w/ the Jets depth at corner & the fact that they only play man.. you almost have to treat it that way. That's where Cro has some value. He's 6'3 can still burst, jump & tackle. Cromartie is still decent outside the numbers. It's when he's asked to change direction or he doesn't get a good jam when he runs into problems.I think Skrine starts & on many Sundays depending on opponent Cro is the dime, Williams/Mcdougle are Nickel. No doubt there will be situations where he comes in handy. I think he CAN play a deep safety role in hail mary type situations. I also think his size & athleticism become magnified & his weaknesses decrease in the red zone w/ the shortened field. He definitely is very pricey..but he's still a valuable asset to this team both on & off field. He's definitely more of a role player at this point..but I don't consider that a bad thing given his history with the team & Bowles.
I love this quote: Bowles: "You can't practice average if you want to be great." http://www.ganggreennation.com/2015/8/10/9128371/todd-bowles-sloppy-practice-earns-coachs-ire
That was such an insult to Sanchez. We all know why now. They did not want him playing. Geno was so bad that Giants game, the only way for him to be named starter would be by Sanchez getting hurt. Hey! Let's throw him in behind the 3rd string O-line and let the Giants blitz at will!
Who knows; if Sanchez doesn't get hurt in that game he almost certainly starts week 1 in 2013. Then maybe after seeing an entire season of Geno in practices they're not sold on him, and they decide to take Teddy Bridgewater when he fell to them at 18 in the 2014 draft. Imagine this roster with Teddy at the helm. Sorry to open old wounds, Stokes.
You read my mind.I was actually gonna edit my original post to include something about this. He actually matches up really well w/ tight ends..or about as well as a defense can. He'll be great against the bigger possession guys like Jarvis Landry as well.
