Right, so our views are much closer than they have appeared in this thread. I just feel the jaw situation was the final straw, where as you would like to see him on the field one more time with his new weapons and offense. Completely fair.
If Fitzpatrick can get us to 2-2 at the bye (meaning beating 2 of Browns, Colts, Eagles, Dolphins) he's set us up for a good season and a second half run. However, I think the team is slightly better off with Geno and he should regain the job week 6 unless Fitz is absolutely tearing it up. However, in all likelihood he's going to be his normal self, playing slightly below average football, which shouldn't be good enough to keep the job. But if Fitz gets the team to 2-2 at the bye, the Jets get a week off, a jolt from a new quarterback, Sheldon Richardson (assuming no additional suspension) and a 4 game stretch against the Redskins, Pats, Raiders and Jaguars, of which they could win 3 or maybe 4. Then games against the Bills (home, Thursday), Texans (long preparation week), Dolphins (home), Giants ("away"), and Titans, which is another non-daunting stretch. I don't want Fitzpatrick to start the entire season, because good things usually haven't happened for teams that have let him do that. But he has proven effective in short stints, and if he's able to get the team to 2-2 he's done his job and more, and the Jets are set up to possibly make a wild card run.
If Fitz is having the best year of his career. The odds of Geno seeing the field sans injury is slim. But that goes without saying. The real question is if Fitz is average/below average through 4 weeks do they make a switch or do they keep him in? Let's present a scenario. Week 1 vs Browns 13-20 151 yds, 1 td, 1 int (Jets win) Week 2 vs Colts- 20-30 175 yds, 1 td, 1 int (Jets lose) Week 3 vs Eagles- 17-24 180, 1 td, 1 int (Jets win) Week 4 vs Dolphins 17-30 215, 1 td, 1 int (Jets lose) Do you make a switch or keep him in?
Definitely make a switch. Then Geno gets a bye to prepare and 4 mediocre defenses in a row to build confidence.
I think that's pretty pessimistic for his td to interception ratio considering he has been better than that with worse WRs in his career.
I think Fitzpatrick will have a 3 TD day somewhere in there before the bye. He tends to have a big game or two early on.
That's not pessimism that's a possible scenario based on his career. Last year here were his first 4 weeks. Week 1 vs Redskins, 14-22, 206 yds, 1 td, 0 int Week 2 vs Raiders, 14-19, 139 yds, 2 tds, 0 ints Week 3 vs Giants 20-34, 289 yds, 1 td, 3 int Week 4 vs Bills, 25/37, 1 td, 2 ints So my scenario isn't farfetched.
Well he had a career week with 6 TD's against a horse**** Titans team last year...that kind of skews the 17-8 ratio just a 'tad'.
Geno shot his wad. before he steps foot onto the field he needs to win back the locker room. I think he should sit unless there is an jury. his immaturity was shown in the way he handled the IK issue. He is not a leader. He doesn't make good choices on the field and in the locker room. That much is shown. and for the people who said he has not thrown an interception he had 2 in practice the day before he thought he could poke a bear and walk away. The reason Fitz sat last yr was due to an injury
122tds 103 ints for hiz career. his carreer year was 24tds 15 ints that big a big enough sample size?
Did you know that if you exclude Geno, the average number of passing touchdowns by a QB who played at least 13 games (there were 24 of them including Geno) was 26? Did you know that there were 9 QB's last year who threw at least 30 td passes? If we could just get an average qb who could throw 26 tds, we'd be golden. After looking at Fitzpatrick's game logs from when he was with Buffalo, I'm beginning to understand why the Jets got him. He puts up respectable points and numbers against NE when he plays, and his worst games against them were all end of the season games when they were out of it. I'm sure Bowles intends to have a better defense than Buffalo had those years. Yds Td Int Result 2009 178 1 1 L 17-10 2010 247 2 2 L 38-31 251 0 3 L 34-3 2011 369 2 2 W 34-31 307 2 4 L 49-21 2012 350 4 4 L 52-28 337 2 1 L 37-31 His production against Miami wasn't as good but he was 3-3 in games played against them while he was at Buffalo during the same period. Here is a comparison of the last two years for QB's, ranked in order of TD passes thrown: Rk Yds TD Int 1 Peyton Manning 10204 94 25 2 Drew Brees 10114 72 29 3 Tony Romo 7533 65 19 4 Andrew Luck 8583 63 25 5 Philip Rivers 8764 63 29 6 Ben Roethlis 9213 60 23 7 Tom Brady 8452 58 20 8 Matt Ryan 9209 54 31 9 Andy Dalton 7691 52 37 10 M Stafford 8907 51 31 11 Ryan Tannehill 7958 51 29 12 Eli Manning 8228 48 41 13 Joe Flacco 7898 46 34 14 Russell Wilson 6832 46 16 15 Cam Newton 6506 42 25 16 Alex Smith 6578 41 13 17 C Kaepernick 6566 40 18 18 Geno Smith 5571 25 34 So you look at Geno and say, oh he's 18th, middlin! Not so. Look at the gap in the number of touchdowns thrown between him and the next guy Kaepernick. The guys who threw the same or more int's than Geno all had way more td's, like Eli, Flacco, and Dalton. This list is for QB's who have played at least 30 games like Geno. The only guys who threw fewer than 25 td's were guys like Griffin and Schaub, who only played in 22 and 21 games respectively. Ron
I brought this up a while ago. His stats were inflated, like Matt Flynn's stats about 5 years or so ago when he stepped in for A-Rod for 1-2 games and he posted ridiculous numbers and suddenly he was being looked at as a franchise QB. I still like what Fitz brings to the table even with those padded stats. I've seen him since his rookie year, he has always been with terrible teams. He had some weapons on those terrible teams, but they weren't competitive, so it's hard to produce good numbers if you're always being asked to turn games around when the defense comes after you. Rams, Bills, Texans. Titans....not sure who else was in there. He now has a good defense to have his back, a good running game and a bunch of weapons. All he needs to do is protect the football.
Yes those are terrible numbers. We have the weapons now to put up 250+yards 2+ td each week. I know you were probably going on the low end with those numbers but I think Fitz can thrive in this offense as well as Geno.
I definitely wouldn't want Geno in there if Fitz is on a roll. I'm hoping when it comes to goal-line series', we pound the ball in with Ivory. Can't afford to get 3 at a time when we aren't in the best shape at QB to begin with.
Those numbers are not farfetched from what Fitz could potentially put up. For comparisons I even put up his numbers for the first 4 games last year and it wasn't far off.
