Yea...there's no way he's playing Week 1. Just because even if his recovery is sped up...he still will have not had practice reps with the 1's since a while. I also don't think he starts Week 2 because I just don't think Fitzpatrick will do enough damage to get benched after one week. I could see him come in late in the Week 3 game if Fitz continues to struggle...but otherwise...I think he comes back Week 4.
If that's true the Jets should just cut him now and avoid the drama instead of cutting him after the season. He's not even worth keeping as a backup, and everyone on the team either laughs at him when he turns his back or they resent him for killing their chances
Fitzpatrick doesn't have to have an out of body season to put the Jets in the playoffs. He just needs to do the things he's done in the past and not get hurt. This is a 9-7/10-6 team with Fitzpatrick's average year. The Jets aren't going to go to the Super Bowl with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB unless the defense is really great. They'll be competent though and what this fan base needs right now is a competent year. God help us if we're in 4th place in the AFC East this year. Because that's a hole it will be hard to dig out of in the next couple of years. Vinny was a much more talented QB than anybody the Jets are likely to find any time soon. He was the #1 overall pick and then got saddled with mostly crappy teams around him until late in his career. He's not a good comp for Fitzpatrick because it's not possible for Fitzpatrick to do some of the things Vinny routinely did, like throw the football 60 yards on a rope with a defensive ends hand on him somewhere.
Anything is possible with Fitz, he's such a wild card. I just put up those hypothetical numbers to see what would we do if he puts up those numbers but we're 2-2 at the bye.
Fitz has never led anyone to the playoffs before so I'm not even sure where this confidence in him is coming from. Fitz playing average doesn't guarantee us nothing. Look at last year, several good/decent qb's missed the playoffs so I don't think it's a given at all.
We all worried that Marshall would be a disruptive influence. Smith is the culprit now while Marshall impresses on the field. In addition, he threw a bad pass that injured B Smith. Bowles must have him in the doghouse already but won't let anyone kno how he feels. When hot dog boy comes back to team this will be a very interesting CS decision. IMO Smith should take his wonderful talents elsewhere and we develop Petty into our fran QB
WHile much of our off season focus has been on Qb, for understandable reasons that go beyond a simple analysis of Smith v. Fitz, some other trends are worrisome regarding any playoff possibilities. Biggest is that the D has so far failed to impress much. No need here to go over the laundry list, but it's a concern. Offense has also not improved as much as hoped. Amaro is a big concern here, since imo Cumberland hit his ceiling some time ago, and Davis is pretty limited. I think many here hoped that this would be an off season of big improvement for Amaro, and instead he's not even playing. Who knew Sudfeld's season ending injury would be any factor at all? At wideout Kerley's stock continues to fall, but there's stil a decent chance the Jets will have a good set of receivers. Can we say they will as of now? I would be reluctant to say so. Carpenter appears to be a bright spot, but I can't get too excited hearing Colon seems to be winning the battle at RG. And Breno remains pretty mediocre. Meanwhile whether Gailey will really make a positive impact remains to be seen. It's not just the Qb position.
Maybe if our defense is a combination of the 85 Bears, 91 Eagles, 00 Ravens, 02 Bucs, and 13 Seahawks.
If folks are thinking he's a "good" option they are fooling themselves. I think "a better" option in this shallow pool is more like it. I'm certainly not singing his praises. But that's not been the narrative on TGG for the past 6 months. We don't need "elite" or even "above average" to compete. As long as it isn't shit-meaning as long as we get average play--we should compete. Now when I think of "compete" and this Jets squad in the same sentence, I'm thinking 9-7 at BEST and summarily knocked out in the first round. Beats the shit out of 4-12 though. _
Pretty much anybody is better than Geno mind state. Until they see Fitz once they have an emotional tie attached and now the narrative has changed. I thought Fitz was s solid hold the fort guy but some people on here swore that Fitz was more than an average at best backup QB.
Oh no no no. If you told me last year Fitz was going to be my starting QB I would have vomited. I was hoping for Marcus But as of right now, I'm just thinking he's hopefully a game manager with Gailey putting him in the best position not to screw up and our D is stout enough to keep us in games. _
Having Fitzpatrick as your starting QB is like having an ugly girlfriend.... You see what some of your friends have and you know you could do better but at the end of the day she is your loyal girlfriend and you make the best of it. When it comes time for games you focus what she does best and put a bag over her head if you have to, to hide what you don't like about her.
I thought smith wasn't due back until week 5, who is saying week 1? oh, wait, that was smith, wasn't it?
I am not sure if thats true. is going 9-7 with fitz better than going 4-12 with geno and probably petty getting a look also? only one scenario moves us forward.
I only want to go 4-12 (or rather 2-14) if there is a franchise QB in that next draft. Marcus, Winston, Teddy. If there is no one of that ilk, I'm ok with being middle of that pack and enjoying a bit of my season. I don't think there is any way Geno is in the mix next year and I think we'll get enough of a look at Petty this year to know we have the guy. _
I can see geno back here if we are 9-7 and he stays on the bench all year. we won't be in position to draft the top qbs if there are any. We will need some youth on the oline so thats where the draft picks should go,not another project qb in the middle rounds. I think the qb depth chart would be exactly the same.I don't know, seems like we burn a year for nothing with fitz. That said, i root for the win ever week
