Sheldon's return doesn't mean Cro and Demario suddenly learn how to tackle properly, which is originally what this thread was about until a couple of geniuses decided it would be smart to bring up some meaningless stats to faux-argue this point. "Oh, look at that, we have the number 2 ranked pass defense, that means Cro and Demario are great tacklers!" Uh, no...it doesn't.
I wouldn't even say the defense has been "great" so far considering the bums we have faced. We did great against the Colts. The 3 other games were solid. Go ahead, copy & paste the stats off NFL.com, I know some here love to do that, we get it. #1 ranked defense, we're the best. If that's what you want to ride with, knock yourself out, have a ball. I wasn't impressed with what this defense did against the Browns when McCown picked us apart, when Manziel went prime-Tebow on us later, the Eagles or Dolphins. And mind you, those are 3 terrible offenses. If you want to be great, if you want to talk about how great this defense is, at least raise your expectations a little bit. You'd think that the way some are trying to argue we just shut down the Packers, Patriots and Seahawks in 3 straight games. People need to stop quoting this NFL.com stat like it means anything because it really doesn't. There are a bunch of great defenses ranked behind us who have been more impressive/proven so far.
I think you forget your love Rex Ryan's defense has averaged 28 points against when facing NE since 2009 including several 30+ & 40+ points against games. The butthurt is strong.
Look, no defense is perfect. Your points about Cro and Davis are fair. But, this defense is pretty fucking good, regardless.
Don't be a liar sir. This defense is perfect; http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/chi/1985.htm?mobile=false
I really wish you would just go cheer for the Giants already... You are wrong on almost everything you talk about. You are probably my least favorite poster on this site. No credibility.
But we really haven't been tested yet. And at times, in week 1 and week 3, the defense did look like a turtle on its back. We couldn't stop McCown, Manziel did well, and vs the Eagles we couldn't stop the run. I think this defense can be great, we're getting Sheldon back now, it's still a work in progress. But stuff like that shouldn't happen against those types of offenses if you consider yourself to be elite on defense. The Patriots game will be a good test for us. I don't expect us to shut Brady down, that's not going to happen. But anything under 300 yards and 1-2 touchdowns with maybe 1-2 picks is going to be solid and more than enough to beat them.
Again, we aren't going to be the 85 Bears. Overall, and with respect to the rest of the defenses in the NFL, ours is very, very good. Perfect? No. Without some notable flaws? No. Very good? Yes. Top 3 (i.e. in the upper 10%)? Very likely.
NFL offenses will have at least some level of success against any defense. In other words, the best of the best is not going to completely shut down the opposition's run and pass game. These are top flight athletes and competitors battling for their livelihood every week. So far, our defense has usually had the best of it.
WE have a new HC, New DC, new scheme... we have won 3 games almost matching last year's total. We are a work in progress and not finished yet... AS for the philly game, we never showed up in the 1st half and still made it interesting shutting them out in the 2nd half, least you forget. maybe its me but I pretty dam happy about the overall progress of the team and we all knew that out LB core was weak... we are not there yet but on our way and I for one - after watching 48 years mostly bad teams - like what I see. BTW - every team has flaws, every team.
The thing that's frustrating is that it's not being over matched physically or anything like that. It's poor fundamentals that can be corrected on the part of Davis and a somewhat lack of effort by Cromartie. The defense didn't play horrible versus the Eagles but if they tackle better maybe we get another possession with better field position. But then again that's what happens when the players association negotiates to have no contact at all throughout the offseason. I understand why Seattle basically said f*ck that and did a ton of contact anyways and ended up getting caught and fined. Look at them though they're the best tackling team in the league the past 4 years.
Pick your poison. No problems here. Side note - can you guys believe Skrine is "half naked?" The nerve of that guy!!!
Yes, but McCown's drive was the first possession of the season. I have seen other good Jet defenses start the season exactly the same way. I like the way they respond to adversity. The Eagles only got 10 legit points against our D, and after that first half disaster, they not only shut them down, but got the ball back often and quickly in the second half. Fitz had plenty of chances to get us back in it. He is jus Fitz. When the refs allowed that ridiculous interception in London, they responded with a sack and a quick 3 and out. I too am not a big stat guy. I think sometimes Bowles starts the game off too conservatively. But he adjusts, and they do play very physically. Nothing to do about Cro but eventually bench him. That TD he allowed the other day wa just stupid. Bench DD too if he keeps it up. We do have adequate replacements.
Shit...if I had a 6-pak like that I'd throw out all my shirts. Side note - Cro's guns are quite a bit larger this season.
Our defense is going to take it to another level with Shelly back. I can honestly see them rushing 4 upfront -Coples, Wilkerson, Richardson, and Williams, and dropping 8 into coverage with Davis and Harris as the linebackers
I would venture to guess that we've sent more than 4 rushers more than any other team in the league so far.
No. Sorry man. I respect your opinion but I disagree w/ you here. You can only play who is in front of you. Before the season started outside of Cleveland every one of those offenses would've been considered very good & a challenge. The Jets defense in their wins has forced the action & been the enforcer. THEY WERE the reason for the Jets winning. They controlled the whole game. In their wins they've been exceptional at winning the point of attack, collapsing the pocket, containing the scramble & being disruptive on the front end, while tight in coverage & physical on the back end. They're gonna give up a few plays...this is afterall the NFL. Then again, maybe there will be a few games when they don't. Don't expect perfection. For once we have a unit that is about making plays & dominating where it matters most: Up front. This unit at full strength including Sheldon & Milliner..is so good..if they play well simply put The Jets will win almost every single time. Patriots? I respect the hell out of their offense & especially what they did to Buffalo. But I'm not even blinking. We know how much Brady hates the interior rush...I haven't seen any DL yet this season collapse a pocket the way Leo/Mo have thus far this season. Skrine/Revis/Williams eat those short area guys alive. And Gronk? Maybe we can't stop him...but we can at least make it hard to to get the ball to him w/ lots of size/length via Cro/Bailey over top. 6'3 & 6'5 respectively. If this defense plays well & we don't turn the ball over on O...we're gonna win every single game. Our top defensive players at the top of their game means plays made & dominance.
