People need to stop looking at box scores when evaluating players, especially linemen. 3-4 ends jobs aren't sacking the quarterback, they have to open up holes for the linebackers. Not too mention there's no stats for plugging holes and stopping the run, which he does a lot. He's played really really well all you have to do is watch. Look at Harrison. This guy never gets his name called and is never lighting up the stat sheet, but this guy is a stud across the board. Just watch him for one drive and see the impact he has. But people probably think he sucks. Also combine this with Sheldon's return which I'm sure has cut into Williams' snaps a little bit. I'm not worried about Williams in the slightest. I've never been so sure of a player before In a long time. He's been awesome against the run and he's been fractions away from a ton of sacks! But sacks are by no means a barometer of how good a player is.
The guy responded to a comment saying that Gurley and Cooper are both 21 and 20 so age wasn't an excuse. In the comment the guy stated that PFF had Williams rated as the best rookie 3-4 DE ever through 7 weeks. I was just stating that you can't ignore that and say age is no excuse because two other players are that age when some "source" (PFF) is ranking him that well. That's all I was saying. The source was PFF.
Seriously? Watt was viewed as an elite, game-changing prospect. And he didn't tear up the league immediately either. Jesus...between the Devin Smith threads and now this, chill out, Jets fans. Rookies don't blossom immediately. If they suck in two years then you start the threads and complain.
I mean its a little different with lineman... They get graded (at least by me) by their impact more than their stats. I don't see Williams getting tackles and sacks but i see him breaking that pocket in real nice. He sets up others for tackles often.. He's definitley not being pushed backwards.. I think he's doing really well. While Sheldon was out he was ranked 5th best 3-4 DE in the league. He'll be fine in my book.
This. I mean unless you are literally locked in watching just Leo every play i don't see how you can just say he's not good lol. He's a d-lineman. TBH i didnt even realize Sheldon was having such a strong rookie season until the end when i noticed he was a DROY candidate. Thats when i started to really watch and lock in on sheldon and seen he was just a straight up BULLY out there!
JAbe was drafted to be a ROLB, a pass rushing LB. Shaun Ellis was drafted to be a 3-4 DE. JAbe played DE in college and was drafted to be on OLB. Ellis played DT in college and was drafted to be a DE. That's how you roll in a 3-4 DE. It's what the Steelers have done forever and it's what the Ravens do also. Herm came in with his 4-3 Cover 2 and they tried to move Ellis back to DT and moved JAbe back to DE in the 4-3. When Ellis couldn't handle the move back to 3T in the NFL the Jets went overboard and traded up for D-Rob to fill the hole.
I typed Abraham but meant Hugh Douglas in my prior post lol (the 4-3 DE miscast as a 3-4 under Bill).
Who's looking at a box score? I just haven't noticed Williams 'at all' in recent weeks. If we were going to use Williams to just be a run stopper you didn't have to use a #6 overall pick on a run stopper.
He is miles ahead of where DeWayne Robertson was at this point and he didn't cost three draft picks. Relax
The games must be rougher now. I remember playing basketball (schoolyard), some handball, and if a stickball game showed up I was in. In between I was chugging beer and smoking cigs (not pot). Of course I'm over 70 now and just maybe my mind just could be going. LOL PS I do agree with everything you said. Damn I wish I was young again.
wouldn't drafting the BPA every time give you the best chance at an impact player? ( the logical answer is yes)
I know but pro football focus has him rated as the best 3-4 DE rookie in NFL history with 10 tackles and two 0.5 sacks according to someone
