Oh wow, I feel a little embarrassed here, but I never realized this. I think I always assumed that Edwards was sorta on his way out here and we sent him packing in convenient way. Then again, this was a long time ago and my memory ain't what it used to be. This definitely lowers Edwards in my eyes and he wasn't very high to begin with....
obviuously rex was the most successsful, but herm was my favorite, i liked his energy and sermon style p.c.'s i don't hate groh for leaving for uva, it was his dream job mangini was like listening to ben stein ryan was refreshing but wore thin quickly bowles hasn't been here long enough to be considered
I don't have any problem with people liking Herm the most, I was responding to the ridiculous notion that we traded him away made by another poster. Dude slunk out the back door.
Mangini gets so much hate from Jet fans because he was a meanie that the players didn't like. He had a difficult personality, but he was an excellent talent evaluator and knew the x's and o's of football as well as anybody. If it wasn't for Favre going down, Mangini takes the Jets from cellar-dwellars to the likely Super Bowl champs in only two years. And he did it without inheriting a lot of good players like Rex did during his two AFC runs.
big time stretch to say they would've been "likely SB champs" thats purely speculative on your part and nothing "likely" about that
Best? Probably Mangini or Herm. Herm had good teams but never really was able to do anything with those. He's like a poor mans Tony Dungy as far as his personality and coaching philosophy. Mangini was the exact opposite but he never really had a good team. What he did was lay the foundation to one of the best teams this franchise had in decades. It's a shame he was chased out before he was able to really build something. Then of course you have Wrecks who came in, took that team over and had some success his first two years, all that based on what Mangini put together. As the years went by it was obvious that Rex had no clue how to build a team, how to put a team together, how to develop players. Bowles shouldn't be up there. He's had 10 games. I'm sure 2-3 years from now he will be the best out of the bunch.
i have absolutely zero doubt whatsoever that the jets would have won the super bowl that year. no question at all.
Boy oh boy oh boy do you have it all wrong! The team quit on him, 4-12!!! Then KC asks to speak with Edwards which was granted.... Then Herman returns to the Jets and attempts to get a contract extension that would keep him a Jet for a long while. Woody gets butt hurt that Herm has some leverage( that we provided for him by even allowing kc to speak with him) and decides to deal him to KC. We had guys jumping for joy on this forum to get a 4th rounder for a " bum" coach that we were about to fire in their minds. This move set back our Franchise for many seasons until Rex finally showed up. Herman may have still been head coach of the New York Jets today if Woody didn't take it personal.
Mangini. Really liked that dude. He seemed like he knew his stuff. For some reason it just didn't workout. Maybe was too much of a hard ass I also liked Rex. Really liked Herm too Al Groh was before my time When I think about it I don't think there were any of the coaches I didn't like lol. It just didn't work out in the end
You don't get draft picks as compensation for coaches that are trying to stay with you. I got it perfectly correct. And a 4th round pick was all he was worth. Probably more than he was worth, considering the results of his stay in KC. Strange though that you would say the team quit on him in the same thread you call him "one of the most inspiring PEOPLE of all time"...
Unfortunately Herm Edwards. Hated Mangini. I really enjoyed having Rex here the first 3 years, but his inability to improve as a HC really bothered me, and was a big disappointment.
that pick became leon washington didn't it? as for herm leaving, it was a tough situation all around, he wanted an extension after a losing record when he lost qb1 and qb2 in the same game. no one knew what if anything chad had left and whether herm could win without him( turns out he couldn't).
Younger jets fan here. Really got into it during the Mangini/Rex tenure, so I guess my view is skewed. Went with rex. Brought attitude, excitement, and 2 good runs to the championship. Elevated the play of some questionable talent at times and did it despite having some of the worst offensive coordinators (&QB's) in the league. Wasn't perfect by all means, but damn it was fun to be a jets fan those first two years.
He doesn't deserve any credit for that. Mangini would have had similar, maybe more success in those 2 years, he put that team together. It was just a matter of when those guys would peak. But what Rex does deserve is blame for the terrible team he built after 4-5 years, how old the team got, how little talent the team had, how he ignored offense in all those years. That's what he deserves blame for, that was on him. He had a few years to develop guys, he had no long term concept. He just ran with the team Mangini handed him and as soon as those guys started to slow down he was lost and the team fell apart from there.
