I disagree. When you buy a car that you really like do you pay retail or sticker price just to make sure you get it before someone else can buy it? IMO there's plenty of downside to paying a player a lot more than he's worth, especially if he's working to stop this kind of thing with the Jets.
WTF is wrong with you? We're all jet fans and root for the same team. I'm well over 70 years old and have been called much worse but c'mon . I'm sorry that my responses got you to make such a remark. Let's have a beer together some day and laugh this off
I am just glad the Eagles traded for the 2nd pick. Took that notion off the table. Philly is desperate.
Not to worry I have a few years left. And when the time comes, it comes.. I've been retired since 2004 and the wife and I have traveled and still enjoying our golden years.
Anybody hear Charlie Casserly interviewed the other day on WFAN? I was surprised. he saw no problem with Hoyer replacing Fitz here, and pointed out how Houston had no problem choosing Hoyer over Fitz prior to last season. He says they're similar players, yet Fitz thrived in Gailey's system. he thinks Hoyer could as well. I was surprised by his assessment actually.
Take the snap, throw the ball as far as you can, pick up 4 yards and repeat. Not hard to excel in that system.
@caplannfl QB Brian Hoyer now has at least 6 teams interested in him. He's still on his visit with the #Broncos. Met with coaches last night.
Only problem with that is that if you don't get the car you want you can always go to another dealership and buy the same model for cheaper. You can't do that with NFL players. You either get the best fit for the team, or you have to put somebody else in the spot that may not know the system or could take some time to fit in. The way I see it, it's more like wanting to buy an automatic Lexus with 125,000 miles on it over buying a stick shift Kia with 30,000 miles. The Kia will be cheaper and have less wear and tear, but you will need to first learn how to drive stick and get used to it. Overall the Lexus will give you more power and quicker results getting where you need to go, but may not last as long. Do you pay more for the Lexus or go cheap with the Kia and hope it works out? It's a tough choice.
I understand what you're saying, but the problem with your analogy is that if there's only one player that's ideal or the best fit for your team at a position, then you should pay him whatever he wants, or one should sell the ranch to move up in the draft to get that player (the same principle). That doesn't work. We saw that constant trading up under Tanny doesn't work because it leaves the roster bare. It leaves holes in starting positions and quality depth and STs players are practically non-existent. There is also such a thing as the salary cap. A GM can't take the attitude that he has to have the best player at every single position. It just won't work financially if you're paying every player top dollar. That's another problem we inherited from Tanny that Mac is trying to correct. Jets players are used to being overpaid and overvalued. Mac is trying to establish a correct salary structure for players based on their position and their level of play. He'll never get that established so that the team can become a true contender if he overpays Fitz, Mo and/or other players.
@RapSheet The #Jets & #Broncos both remain interested in Brian Hoyer, but both have a few balls in the air. Each side will take a few days to ponder
Translation the Broncos are still waiting to see if they can get a deal done with Kaepernick. The Jets number 1 priority is resigning Fitzpatrick. If those things fall through then they'll try to sign Hoyer.
Oh yeah, I definitely agree with you here. It's silly to overpay somebody just because they are the best fit. This is why I've been leaning to Hoyer over Fitz lately. I think he'd be able to duplicate the success Fitzpatrick had last year, maybe even do better. He'd also come at a more reasonable price. I think people are just all over the place in trying to estimate what is fair compensation for Fitz. Some say 7-8m. I see that as a slap in his face after 33 TDs in 15 games. With that said anything over $12m is a slap in the face to the Jets considering Fitz had A LOT of help getting there and he was in the ideal system. I think 10-11m is fair for both sides, but getting Hoyer at 5-7m is a better option, when given the choice. The only problem is that leadership is priceless and isn't something that you really teach. Fitz had this intangible so it should raise his value slightly, but he's not getting anywhere near 15m. With Hoyer, I don't really know if he can take the reigns as decisively as Fitz has, so it's just very hard to determine until you see it in action.
@JasonLaCanfora Brian Hoyer leaving Denver. No contract yet. Will stay in touch with Jets and Broncos. Bears and Steelers also monitoring situation
