From what I read Geno looked terrible Saturday, while Petty is making progress and improving. I don't know that Petty will be ready to be in the #2 spot this season but I think the team is either going with 4 QBs or if Petty has made a big enough jump then they get rid of Geno.
After only 4 days there is not much yet and there is still a lot of camp left. Just want to say that before I get crucified by some. This first link is a slideshow, yeah I know, I hate slideshows also but it is only 8 slides. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/08/studs_and_duds_from_first_4_days_of_jets_camp_incl.html#6 Not much more info than a tweet but 3 interceptions just on Saturday for Geno says something, granted this D is going to be a beats this year so that has something to do with it. As for Petty it was just one small quote from Mac, he said "It looks like he's improved," Jets GM Mike Maccagnan said Friday. "We'll see again when we get to the preseason games and get pads on. We haven't done anything other than shorts and t-shirts. He seems to be making good progress." https://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/07/bryce_petty_has_no_doubt_he_can_be_jets_no_2_qb_pl.html
Not sure your point? That redzone.org can rip off rotoworld.com who had twisted Charles Robinson's words. Here's what C Robinson actually said. "It's early. But yeah, there's a pretty obvious depth chart division between Geno and Hack/Petty right now."
○ Fitzpatrick was just given 12M to start this up coming season. ○ Geno's not only looked pretty good throughout the offseason but he's also our only backup QB with NFL experience behind Fitzpatrick. ○ Hackenberg was just drafted during the 2nd round of this year's draft. Because of these 3 scenarios I don't see any which way possible our G.M could release any one of Fitz, Geno or Hack. Petty would have to be the odd-man out. ° When thinking about next year there's also reason to keep 4 QB's. Fitzpatrick & Geno can very well become Free Agent's next year. Which would leave Petty & Hackenberg as our only two QB's. I can picture both Petty & Hack having a QB competition for the starting position come next offseason along with signing a veteran to back up these two young guns. Really not a wrong answer here. Cut Petty & it's understood why. Keep Petty while carrying 4 QB's and thats also justifiable.
Not looking to crucify but while Geno threw 3 picks Saturday Fitz threw 2 and had a fumble - I have seen mixed reviews about both of them from that day and on Sunday Cimini was more positive about Geno than Fitz. On day 3 neither Fitz (16/26) or Geno were sharp - both had ints Geno led with 3 (all in the Red Zone 2 in 7/7 and 1 in 11/11) Fitz had 2 and was guilty of a fumble too. Geno finished with a pick for the second day while Fitz hit on a 1 yarder. Hack appears to be improving his accuracy and the staff saying nice things about Petty. On day 4 no stats on Geno but Per Cimini Jets practice recap: Uneven day for Ryan Fitzpatrick -- 16-for-27, 1 INT, 1 sack (Slater stated Fitz was 14-for-24). http://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/jets-roster-for-2016-2017-season.86753/page-8 Neither of these reports make me make Fitz a stud or Geno a dud - seems like the D are ahead and making plays. Still nothing I have read or seen makes me feel like it will alter TBs depth chart statement QB1=Fitz, QB2=Geno, QB3=Petty & QB4= Hack. If they carry 4 QBS then the first to leave will be Fitz or Geno, if we carry 3 it will (at this time) be Petty
The thing I look at with the little bit of work they have put in, is that Geno has been around the league for 3 plus years so he should look better than Petty or Hack. The question is going to be, how much better? I agree that Petty is going to have to show a lot to jump Geno on the depth chart but if he does then Geno should be gone, if he doesn't then they carry 4. Don't see them getting rid of Petty unless he goes backwards which it doesn't seem he will at this point.
Since when does your backup have to have NFL experience. THEY JUST PAID A GUY 12 MILLION DOLLARS, because the guy they had was crap, is crap and always will be crap. Geno has NFL experience, all terrible, non productive crap.
I think the question will come down to, does the coaching staff think Petty can handle being the backup QB. I think the coaches would much prefer to keep Petty over Geno, since they drafted Petty, and inherited Geno. Ultimately, I think Geno gets the nod and Petty gets cut.
Had to change my vote to fitz after seeing the structure of the contract. The deal voids the day after the super bowl meaning his deal expires before geno's.
Petty unfortunately. I would like to see him stay on and be the #2 this year. I think ultimately he has the tools to be a good backup and was drafted by this regime. I just don't know if he's progressed enough. Geno however is the safe bet to keep in 2016. He has 850 NFL dropbacks plus a year watching and learning last season (hopefully maturing) He has no future with us or with any other team as a starter. But as a backup, Geno is about as textbook as it gets.
Fitz apparently looked good early and then might've slipped a little. I was actually expecting that because he essentially came in off the street, and after the initial excitement would need some recovery time to acclimate to camp. Petty said he's competing for the #2 spot, and is, in theory anyway. Obviously he would have a long way to go even if he's taken some steps forward already the past year..
