Purely a team benefit, the only player I see benefiting would be an older vet that may have otherwise been cut.
I think everyone is overreacting to the Petty to practice squad thing. Remember, for a team to take him off our PS that means he has to be signed to the active roster. I just don't see any team making him part of their active roster so Petty will probably go to the PS and stay there the entire year. If by some chance he did get claimed, I find it extremely hard to believe he would stay on someones active roster for 17 weeks.
That's if he makes it to the practice squad. We have to release him first to get him on the PS. That gives everyone a chance to sign him as a FA. I think he could even sign to another teams practice squad if he wanted to.
I don't think he can go straight to another team's PS. But someone could want him as a 3rd stringer and claim him for their 53.
Pretty sure he can go to anyone's practice squad if no one picks him up for their active roster....it usually works out where the player goes back to his original team's practice squad but I'm pretty sure they are free to go anywhere
Almost - Spadola. http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/ryan-spadola-signed-to-dolphins-practice-squad-1.6225742
If he gets put on waivers he can sign to anyone's practice squad. So the Jets would risk losing him to both anyone's active roster AND anyone's practice squad. If he made it through unclaimed and did sign onto the Jets practice squad, at that point he can't leave for another team's practice squad, only another team's active roster. I think if you make the decision to cut him out of camp you pretty much have to assume you are moving on completely as chances are quite likely that you wouldn't be able to slide him through AND stash him to your practice squad for an entire year. but maybe i guess.
Because this is madden(jk). I just don't feel Geno in the eyes of many has any ceiling.. with Petty as an unknown I can see a team needing a QB taking a stretch or chance to try and fill a hole
Or one less option for N.E after Jimmy Garoppolo completely wets the bed opening night against the Cardinals (on the road in Arizona). Hopefully Garoppolo ends up getting Gronkowski destroyed with bad passes while setting up Gronk for monster defensive hits during the 1st 4 weeks against Arizona, Miami, Houston & Buffalo.
Petty had a good practice yesterday from what I read. I think he and Geno are going to get most of the non 1st team snaps in preseason and it will be competition from there.
