Dallas has been open about wanting a backup behind Prescott. With the news Bridgewater is out for the year on a team that has playoff aspirations I could see them making inquiries. Denver is likely to cut Sanchez leaving a void. There are talks that the 49ers will release Colin Kaepernick which could be another destination. Following my last comment, if Kaepernick is released him and Sanchez would be the best two QB's on the FA market. A market that is currently topped with names like Jimmy Clausen, Josh Freeman, Matt Flynn, Charlie Whitehurst. Even if those guys are out there Kaepernick is going to lose a lot of potential interest after the national anthem protest, and the guy looked abysmal in his return to action after his shoulder injury. As for Sanchez he couldn't win a QB battle with a 2nd year 7th round pick. Oh how the mighty have fallen. Amongst company like this I could see the organization fielding a few calls for Geno's services. The question is, is it now worth carrying 4 QB's if this was something that could materialize?
I guess the question is if Fitz goes down would we be okay with Petty? If we can get at least a 5th then I'd do it though. Geno will never be a winner in this league.
The way I see it, Geno has at most 1 year left w/ the Jets and is definitely gone next year as his cost will outweigh his value to the team. The question is, how much value does Geno have to the Jets this year, vs either having to release Petty (and get to see what you truly have there) or having to carry 4 QBs. While we don't know all that much about Petty, I'm not so sure there's a huge difference between what we'd get w/ Petty playing (if Fitz got hurt) vs. what we'd get with Geno playing...but admittedly it's a gamble, and based more on what I've seen we would/wouldn't get from Geno than anything based on Petty's play... And if it's even remotely true that the gap isn't that big, you have to trade Geno, risk the difference between Geno/Petty is not that great this season, and buy time to see what Petty can become in the following years...which again, won't include Geno at all anyway...Either way, I think Petty has a future with the Jets for the next 2 seasons or so (even if he falls behind Hack), and Geno does not!
Dallas would want a veteran, Vikes have better options either in FA or potential trades and tbh the real problem with a trade at this date is that the receiving team would want the new guy to pick up the playbook fast and gel with the lockeroom. Geno isn't someone you'd describe as a quick study or a lockeroom hero. If we get any pick I'd take the trade but I really don't see anyone offering anything for him for one years service.
Problem is we know Geno stinks but so does the rest of the league . Maybe Sporano in Mindy does something stupid and talks this guy up,,,,,better yet maybe the Vikes have a serviceable lineman that is about to be cut,,,trade Geno for that player and it's a win win,,,,I just don't see it happening but I can hope can't I
The whole league knows what Geno is. Not sure what they would offer, but I'd take it. I'd rather go with Sanchez if I were looking for a QB.
Where is Al Davis when you need him? Geno throws a nice deep ball and is otherwise useless. Al would have love him.
Guess Geno doesn't fit the criteria to be a mediocre QB in this league even though he plays better than many under that category. If he survives the roster cut then obviously the coaching staff believes he's better than Petty at his stage of his career.
When I think mediocre I certainly don't think Geno Smith. Ya know, guys that have at the very least thrown more touchdowns than interceptions in their career. His play has proven to be fairly bad, regardless of what 'potential' every Geno fan is praying he has left. The results prove otherwise. I would say Geno has about as much trade value as Claude Pelon. Who? Exactly, had to check the roster for that one.
Our FO is doing things the right way. You don't get rid of anyone, until you have a replacement. You do your best to find a better player, doesn't always work out. I think Petty is as good as Geno or will be with a few games/practices under his belt. If Fitz goes down, I'd rather watch Petty and or Hack play out the year.
Id rather just take my chances in Petty and see what he does with #1s. We have seen Sanchez crash and burn (more lately then ever) and Geno is what he is.
But the Denver FO is doing the exact opposite, and they are looking at their starters, not backups. They took the riskier approach and went with the inexperienced guy over the QB that went to two AFC championship games. They are currently shopping Sanchez and asking him to take a pay cut. So I wonder if our FO is being just a bit too conservative by holding onto a QB most of the fanbase dislikes. Honestly, even if Fitz goes down and Geno leads the Jets to the playoffs, is he the long-term answer the Jets fanbase is looking for? I dont think so.
We won't know what our FO is doing until final cuts, or a trade happens. I hope the Jets fan-base does not play into the decision making process.
