I have looked at several of the big plays and TBH Williams was at fault for 3 - the first big chunk play when Cincy hit their 3rd string TE for 54 yrds, Williams went for the Int and missed rather than tackling the player for a more modest gain of just 20 to their 45 rather than ending at our 20. He also was covering LaFell on a 3rd and 18 which they converted and was part of the miscommunication that resulted in the blown coverage intended to give Revis help deep on AJs TD reception. Skrine did not have a good day - there were few if any passes broken up once Dalton aired them out - most of his incompletions were as a result fo pressure When AJ beat Revis deep Gilchrist was stranded covering the shorter crossing route and waving frantically at Williams to cover deep like he was supposed to. Revis had expected help deep on the play and was in trouble when it failed to materialise Also for those who want to see who in the secondary really struggled Revis tackled LaFell whom Williams had lost due to poor coverage for the pass just before the bomb. At the end of the first half AJ was 6/6 on targets for 87 yrds in total (including the 54 yrd TD on a blown coverage). In the first half the DL ensured that for the most part Dalton was under pressure and could not get deep often but the disappointing thing was he hauled in all of his targets although he was not always covered by Revis alone in the early drives In the third Qtr AJ lost his balance after catching a bubble screen for 29 yrds but had blockers in place and the Jets as a team were not doing a good job to stop them - in trith we caught a break as he should have taken it to the house. Revis was playing off as they were backed up on 1st down and the misdirection fooled the D allowing the Bengals block our DBs easily. A few plays later on 3rd and 18 the Jets D seemed to switch off and Dalton found LaFell for a 49 yrd completion with Williams trailing - TBH he had reasonable coverage but Dalton was precise. AJ caught 1 ball for a quick 6 yrds before Hill ran it in. Now 8/8 for 132 yrds and a TD and just a Qtr to go. AJ made one truely impeccable catch down the side line for 32 yrds on the Bengals 1st drive of the 4th Qtr - no one would have covered it and Revis was there step for step - 9/9 for 164 yrds. Next catch on their next drive was for 6 yrds 10/10 for 170 which was followed by a first down of 11 yrds but was made worse by a penalty by Gilchrist gifting them 15 yrds more 9/9 for 156 yrds. Green had one last catch to set up the winning field goal to go 12/13 on targets - he had one tip the carpet and be disallowed - for 11. Take out the TD , screen and impeccable catch and he had just 70 yrds - would not look so bad. Looking at the game we played off but there are a number of goats and I'm not 100% Revis was one of them. Fitz was off on a few too many throws in the red zone (and no I am not advocating to play Geno as Fitz moved in the pocket avoiding pressure at times but he was poor at times too), too often Williams let bigplays happen when he messed up, Folk missed a few chip shots and we had bad penalties when we had chances to stop them. The worst play being the 3rd and 18 when the entire D seemed to go to sleep. Our play calling did not adjust in the second half but equally the Bengals had to reach deep into their bag of tricks and run multiple "gimmick" plays to slow our D down. Marshall and Decker need to stand up and find ways to get open for Fitz.
Revis should be ok against guys not of the calibre of Green, Watkins, etc, the problem is the Jets are paying him to cover those guys, which at this point he can't do without help. The other problem is the corners not named Revis on the outside need help as well, so dividing Gilchrist between Williams/Revis and or Buster is going to be tricky. DR was such a sound tackler that to see him even struggling yesterday doing that is troubling as well. When they needed him to make the big stop on Green right before the GW field goal he barely stopped the first down. That was the play of the game, IMO. He is still a quality CB, no doubt, but unfortunately the Jets are paying him for skills that he no longer has, sad, but true.
The decision to keep or cut Revis next year comes down to whether you think we can get better production on the FA cornerback market with $9.3M to spend.
The issue is that he has $8 mil in dead money if cut next year. Think of it this way. The Jets will have $26 mil of their cap being used up between Wilkerson and Revis, if Revis is cut in 2017. $32.3 mil if he plays. The real question is can you replace him for $7.3 mil or less in cap hit with someone BETTER? If not we're working backwards yet again.
Football Outsiders said Dalton was 10-10 for 150 yards when throwing to Green against Revis. That is awful no matter how you look at it. I think he's done. You don't pay 30+ year old CBs the kind of money the Jets gave Revi$.
We need to move Revis to saftey the problem is we cant do that until next year when we have some cap room in free agency and we can find a new num 1 corner.Revis would be a great saftey would be one of the best. The defensive staff has to do a better job of moving guys around and scheming to mask our flaws....
you can't cover the wr1 with ghilly and revis, because williams needs help too. the answeris to have willias jam the wr1 with safety help, revis on an island on wr2. that should hold the qb long enough for sheldon,mo and leo to feast
If what one poster posted is true about Revis not working hard during the offseason and reporting to camp out of shape, then that will make the Jets' decision a lot easier at the end of the season.
Burris should be ready to start at one CB spot next year. If Revis doesn't improve or Bowles can't or won't find a way to scheme to help Revis, then they can't keep him and pay him that much money knowing that he's a liability. IMO it would be better to draft a rookie CB in the 1st or 2nd round and start him if Revis doesn't show any improvement the rest of this season.
Unfortunately, you're right about Williams needing help too. The thing is, after yesterday's game, I would have little or no confidence in Williams being able to cover the other team's #1 WR even with safety help. I'd rather move Skrine out of the slot and let he and a safety cover the opponent's #1 WR, move Williams to the bench and let Lee cover the slot receiver. I don't see how he could be much worse than Williams.
No he wasn't nearly as bad as everyone is making him out to be. Williams killed us much more. Sent from my SM-N930V using Tapatalk
They all did and Skrine is still a penalty machine..these are all Mac's. Wonder how Cromartie did in Indy this week with his 3M contract.
