Ha! Yeah, they should beat LA at home...but if things stay the same, with Mo and Sheldon pouting, etc
who knows. Fitz has a sprained MCL, this is the perfect game to see what Petty can do. Put it this way,
if they leave Fitz in there with a bum knee then I don't know wtf is going on.

Actually, LA has 2 pretty good pass rushers -- Quinn and Hayes. There is argument to be made that maybe Fitz should start so that he is finally killed for good.

Don't forget Aaron Donald, he's their best player.

    RIP Fitzpatrick.

I'd rather they start Petty this week against the Rams than after the bye against the Pats.

yup I'm on board with this now. He can't do worse then fitz. I'm tired of poor red zone production and costly INTs. and you know what, if he is worse somehow, it just means a better draft pick. I'd rather get a top 10 pick, then pick 15th and still miss the playoffs

I'm saying that Petty should start this week. I wanted him to start 2 weeks ago vs the Browns.

Based on your response, it sure didn't sound like you saw or comprehended what I was saying. I'm glad you do.

"Mentally ready" isn't black or white, and/or there's not just one level of "mentally ready" imo. Petty could have a ton of confidence in himself, but not having actually played a regular season game in the NFL makes a difference. It's one thing to practice against one's teammates, and as far as we know, Petty hasn't even had that many practice reps with his first team offense, but it's quite another playing in a real game. Coaches and players talk about this all the time. They talk about giving a young/rookie QB some easy throws right off the bat to build his confidence and get him in a groove. They talk about getting game experience. If game experience didn't matter or help, then there would be no reason to turn over the season to young players to help them develop. Then those posters who have said the Jets could just wait until next season to let Petty and Hack fight it out would be right.

It would be nice to have a player who has the bolded attitude above, but I bet precious few do. They aren't superhuman. They are human beings just like you and me, and their confidence and readiness grows with experience in actual games, and from having success in those games. It definitely makes a difference who Petty starts against in his first game.

Your attitude imo is dumb and about 30-40 years behind the times.

It doesn't make a damn difference who he starts his first game against. The wins/losses aren't important so especially who cares. The Rams have a better defense than the Patriots anyway

I have to respectfully disagree. I was down at Miami for the game. In addition to the horrible interceptions, Fitzpatrick missed THREE touchdown passes: he overthrew a wide open Anderson, and he TWICE missed an open Marshall in the end zone. In none of those cases was he under pressure or hurried, he simply missed open receivers.

The running game was working. The d was stifling the dolphin running game. And even after the ko return , I believe there were still three minutes to play with the Jets down four. That's the true test of an NFL qb. And he failed again. Enough

That Anderson play especially should've gone for six. That wasn't even a difficult throw. He was wide open

Chances are Petty won't start until after the first Patriots game unless Fitz can't go due to the knee. They aren't going to start him against the Pats, and LA might be too soon. That's the impression I got from the guy who spoke with Bowles about it and was interviewed on the radio. This way Petty will have the bye week, and the Patriots week to prepare for the Colts, whose defense isn't that good. It seems like the right game to give him a shot.

OK... putting aside the degrees of mental readiness... here is how opponents performed vs Rams and vs Pats:

    Completion %..............vs.LA - 62.42......vsNE - 62.54
    Pass yrd/game.............vs.LA - 232.2.....vsNE - 252.5
    Yrds per completion.....vs.LA-10.0.........vsNE - 10.3
    Sacks/game.................byLA - 1.9..........byNE - 1.6
    Sacks %.......................byLA - 4.79........byNE - 3.96

Every single pass stat and QB rushing stat says LA is better than NE vs. pass. So if you're concerned about Petty's mental health, you actually should root for him to start against NE.

    EDIT:
for the record, I don't give a shit about his mental health. I hope he gets burned against LA and then takes the frustration out on the Pats.

If Petty isn't the starter against the Colts then I gotta think the management doesn't fancy him period.

I appreciate your digging up the stats, but those don't matter to me. I knew that the Rams have a better D than the Pats. That is part of the issue obviously, but I was speaking of the total picture. Petty's a competitor and will want to win. Case Keenum is nothing special and the Rams don't put up many points. Brady puts up points by the 40s. Whereas it doesn't matter if we don't win the game, I think Petty would feel less pressure vs the Rams, which isn't a conference or divisional opponent, whereas the Pats are our main rival.

If Petty's first start is against the Pats, so be it. I will root for him regardless of who the first team is or what other fans say. I just think it would be better if he had a start or two under his belt against a lesser opponent than the Pats.

That last offensive series was perhaps the worst I have seen this season. The lack of urgency, confused state, idiotic playcalling, and dismal execution was unbelievable.

Any realistic chance we had of making the playoffs is over. Fitz isn't coming back next year, so there's no reason not to play Petty. If he's good, we've found our guy, and if he isn't, we learn that and maybe get a better draft pick.

There are 3 obvious times you make a QB change.

    1) Your starting QB is hurt

    2) Your starting QB is playing like dogshit

    3) Your season is over and you're looking to the future

We have all 3. If they don't start Petty it shows me they think he's absolutely terrible.
