I am getting a little tired of these roughing the passer calls. What else do you do when you've got the quarter back wraped up and you SACK HIM! This is completely out of control and i pray it gets addressed during competition meeting's and during the yearly review of officiating and rules. Not only was that a good sack(A Classic sack) but there was an interception caused by the sack ,if this game was closer then that might have meant something maybe the game !!!!!
This game was close... Without it, we're up 6, 9 or 13 going into that last series.... Of course, it's hard to say that because if something happens in the 1st half, it effects the rest of the game.
I don't think we'll ever see the penalty changed but I do wish they would use some common sense with these rules. The penalty had no effect on the INT so it should not give the Pats the ball back.
Yeah I agree. Vilma, Thomas and Hobson have all been called for roughing the passer in tight situations. I can't completely argue against the calls, but it pissed me off when I saw two similar hits in the Bears-Giants game go uncalled. If I was the Jets I'd be complaining long and hard to the NFL office. BTW, I still have only seen one "giving him the business" call ever made in the NFL. Against Marty Lyons about 20 years ago...
Assuming they change what constitutes a roughing the passer call, I think for "letter of the law rules" -- e.g. head slap or finishing a tackle by driving into the groud -- there should be a 5 or 10 yard penalty that isn't an automatic first down. It is crazy that you can take a "cheap shot" and get the same penalty as touching the helmet or finishing a tackle.
Ill agree that many times what happens in the first half wont necessarilly change the out come of the game ,but it can! I just cant grasp the new calls against pass rushers .I realize they are trying to protect the quarter back from injury but what happens when a De comes free and clear and is heading toward the QB who doesnt even see him flying in from the side ,should the player stop his motion and tap on thre QB's sholder and say "Gotcha" but Ill bet if he blindside sacks him they call the penalty where in years before thats a great sack!
Or pulling the sock down. I may have posted about it 3 times now, but I'm still outraged by that call in the Saints-Steelers game.
I didn't even think about it, but the INT should have stood. Brady threw the ball and then Hobson "roughed him up". If the pass is already in the air, the INT should have stood.
Terrible, Terrible call. It was a textbook tackle by Hobson and could have cost us the games. Some of this good karma needs to come our way.
From the NYPost: "The Jets, still stung from the terrible call on Chris Baker's catch in Cleveland, were the victims of another horrible officiating call yesterday. LB Victor Hobson was called for roughing the passer when, at full speed, he tackled Tom Brady just as Brady released the ball, which was picked off by rookie CB Drew Coleman. "He picked (Brady) up and drove him into the ground and used the force of his helmet and basically stuffed him into the ground," referee Pete Morelli said. He also said that Hobson has to know then the QB has let the pass go. Replays showed that Morelli's claim to be nonsense. There's no way for Hobson to have known whether Brady released the ball and he didn't drive him to the ground with intent to injure."
Brady left his feet as he was making his throw just as Hobson hit him so it appeared that Vic picked him up which wasn't true.
I agree, unfortunately I had a premonition of it happening. Did you see the replay of Hobson's first sack? If you watch the ref he has his hand on the flag and is bent way down watching the way that Brady hit the turf. I thought he would throw it there, but knew if it happened again there would be a flag. Absolutely terrible call....
Ridiculous call, the defender can't even finish the tackle without a flag. Hobson made a textbook tackle as the ball was coming out, what is he supposed to do? This is football for godsake..
Do you notice how we keep getting these roughing the passer calls, but we never get one in our favor? It's like 6-0 right now.
On the flip side, we had the benefit of the refs tinkering with a spot inside the 10, and slowing the Patriots to a halt when they were gashing us for big chunks of yards. You could see how Belichick was furious that they interrupted the rhythm of the offense. I run by the theory that all these calls even out over the course of a game. Generally. The exception being a Baker call, when it's so obviously game-deciding.
You forgot, it's Tom Brady, the darling of the NFL. You can't actually hurt him, come on, a flag will fly every time. You'll get the same deal when you play Peyton. Certain guys are untouchable, "and that's a scientific fact"
I saw that too ,I screamed here comes the flag like 4 seconds before he threw it.You could just see the ref bending down low to see the hit and his mind was already made up before contact. This kind of stuff could have an effect on players and real important moments in a game when a call like this could upset the balance or mommentum, or just make you loose the entire game.
