Okay, so I was reading last weeks Sporting News and they did a 2nd half of the season Preview. One of the topics was "Later, Coordinator" where they listed the top assistant coaches that will become head coach candidates based on conversations with general managers. Here is the list with what they wrote about Brian Schottenheimer The list: Ron Rivera Ken Whisenhunt Cam Cameron Mike Tomlin Brian Schottenheimer - Marty's kid is on the rise. Mike Singletary Rex Ryan Jim Caldwell I know what you must be saying. He's only in his thirtie....wait a second...well he's only been a coordinator for one year...um...oh yeah...Just because he's been groomed by a genius doesn't mean...damn....I guess my question is what ARE the chances he could leave us, and who would be a top replacement?
Slim to none he will be leaving after this year. Now 3 years down the road thats another story, i doubt he'll see NY in 2009-2010
based on what? I'm curious. The NFL is a copycat league, and if the Jets have success this year whose to say another team wouldn't go out and try for a young coach?
He's getting respected but I doubt people see our success beacause of BS. What im saying is that our offense isn't impressing anyone. Therefore I doubt he would leave after this year. Like JetsFan119 most likely in two or 3 years. Remember how long it took Charlie Weis to move out of New England and im sure Bill was beggin him to stay.
Im just telling you my opinion. You also have to think about coaching vacancies....lets see off the top of my head there are 5: Washington Arizona Tennessee Oakland Buffalo and im sure one or 2 of them will stick out another year with the coach they have now. Im just telling you that i think he needs 2 or 3 good years, he may be inovative with his playcalling but our offense still isnt that good, and it takes more then X's and O's to be a good coach (ie herm, but the opposite, he didnt know xs and os, but he knew how to motivate). Just give him 2-3 more years
i hope we can hold onto him for a while. i know it doesnt always pay off, but i like his aggresive playcalling. it sure beats the old run 3 times and punt playbook.
In my opinion Schottenheimer is exceeding expectations with this offense. He is making the most of our lackluster running game (which has been getting better every week) and has been innovative in the passing game like you had said. I could see a team like Arizona taking a chance on him with the weapons they have on offense.
I really don't think Cowher will be fired after one losing season and winning the Super Bowl the year before. Maybe you're saying he's going to resign, but I don't see that either...
I'd be stunned if Schottenheimer gets a head coaching job next season, but he's certainly a guy to keep an eye on in the coming few years. He's done a very nice job with our offense and (for better or worse) he has an established coaching pedigree.
It seems to me, if you wanted to go offense with a HC, the coordinators from some wide-open offense (Cincinnatti, New Orleans, etc.) would be higher on the list. But that's just the way I see it.
As Murrell humorously alluded to, but I do think that GMs are likely to consider differently a one-year coordinator who had put in many years with THE genius and a one-year coordinator who also spent a few years with his dad, the inventor of Martyball. I'd be shocked if he got an offer next year, but what do I know.
