I'd like a RB who can take it to the house from anywhere. This draft has some good ones including Barkley who the Jets may or may not get. Neither Powell nor McGuire is that explosive RB. That said, just having a good running game is not enough to win in today's NFL. The Jets need a passing attack that is at least competent to prevent teams from stacking the box all the time. Mac must address the offense(including RB) in free agency and the draft and it will likely determine if he stays or goes.
A real power running game would be awesome these days with these quick, undersized linebackers. Is there a new Earl Campbell or John Riggins available in this draft? No? Then PASS.
Don’t mind running a balanced or even run heavy offense as long as you have the personnel to pull it off Need some upgrades on the oline and a true number 1 RB to start
Run? He will STILL go for a field goal on 4th and goal all the time...this is just one piece of how bad he is.. And people still think Cousins doesn't know how Bowles over rules all his OCs with the 1980s philosophy lmao
The Eagles are a very balanced team, although it may not look that way because of their offense and how it's run. There are a lot of run/pass options, because they run a lot of read option (duh) and take a look at a lot of the teams in last years playoffs and how reliant they were on the running game: Jacksonville, Buffalo, Tennessee, Kansas City, New Orleans and the LA Rams all were run first teams. New England, Pittsburgh and Minnesota all relied on a good balance of passes and runs. Yes, if you have Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers, you're obviously going to be a pass first team, but look at the teams outside of those with the rare ultra talented franchise QB's who can carry the entire team on their backs. The teams that find consistent success, or success at all, are ones who can run the ball down the opposing teams throat to help out their 2nd, 3rd or 4th their QB. That's how the Jets were successful from 2009-2011. That's how 90% of the league has to try to win games. To do it any other way with a less than stellar Quarterback is nearly impossible.
This is why firing Morton was a bad sign...I knew it was because Bowles just wants to run the ball 50 times a game.
Keep in mind that philosophy is probably with the current QB's we have in mind. Kirk comes walking through that door, and that's out the window. Unless we also get Barkley at #6, at which point I will proceed to jizz everywhere.
The jets are usually able to get back on track running the football..it’s one of the few things they tend to get right. What bothers me is this that there seems to be such a a priority given to this that it’s clouding how inept & inconsistent the passing game has been for seemingly forever. I get balance is important,as is a solid running attack. But at some point a team has to be able to throw to win ball games without smoke & mirrors
The amount of butthurt and hate for Bowles is unreal. Because a team like the Saints who have Drew Brees, became dominant behind a RUN oriented offense and they had Brees. How about the Chiefs, straight dominated when Hunt was almost a run away choice for ROY, then he stopped getting touches, they got cute and passed more, and it was part of the reason for their mid season swoon. How about the Rams, Gurley was a beast and was the reason they elevated to a playoff team. There's only so many Brady's and Rodgers to go around. Those guys can pass 40-50 times a game and win. Literally everyone else in the league needs a strong run game, and that's the point. It's not to say, OMGZ WE GONNA RUN 60 TIMES A GAME...No the point is to have the run game be strong, it eats TOP, it keeps the defense fresh, and shocking to most, it helps the QB! And that's the point. The Eagles were dominant because their run game was top notch. It made lanes and the offense easier because of the threat that any of their RB's posed. So when in their offense they did the Run /Pass option, you had to choose wisely. You couldn't sell out for the run, and you couldn't read pass and leave wide open lanes. Having a strong run game is to help the QB, that's all it is. Stop being wise asses here. It's a passing league because the rules but the emphasis for literally every team is to have a good run game. Of course getting a franchise QB or a good one is the point here and the main focus...You still need that compliment for the QB.
You have a point....one residing fact in the past two Superbowls...punishing RB Lagarrete Blunt played on the winning team. Coincidence.... probably but it was a factor.
This is the team that took the ball out of Geno's hands for an entire half was it? Its not so much that Bowles wants to return to the GnP, its the HOW the run game is implemented that is scaring a lot of people. Sometimes this team gets in a rut and will go all run or all pass. Maybe Bates will be different, maybe he won't. If he got pissed at the last OC for passing too much, will the OC get pissed for running too much? What happens if the zone blocking scheme isn't picked up immediately or at all by the current OLinesmen? Too many moving parts in the offense for it to run smoothly in its first year so what do we do? If Bowles for once would just play to the strengths of his personnel instead of attempting plug and play like he did with Richardson, more of us wouldn't be so skittish about this new "run first" philosophy he's floated.
Nothing wrong with prioritizing the run, the problem is we don't have the necessary personnel to pull it off. Our o-line as of now cannot run block consistently to save their lives. Second, we have no feature back or game breaking RB's. This can obviously all change in short order in FA/draft, but much is left to be seen.
#1 rusher, with #2 pass catcher and #3 passer in the NFL all playing in one team gets you to the Superbowl. [That was Emmitt, Michael and Troy in 1992] So run first philosophy does work. Just, your rushing offense must be so good that it always scores first.
He didn't say run oriented, more balanced or that they need to run the ball better. He said "Run first". Now I'll grant you there are different forms of run first. It comes down to if the overriding philosophy is aggressive or conservative. In other words...is it about running at all costs which is essentially trying to win with defense OR is it score at all costs which means run when we need to run? Bowles doesn't give alot of details really ever so we're forced to judge him on his actions. Based on the 2 forms of a "run first" offense which one do you think Bowles is going for? Until the last 1.5 seasons the jets have BEEN a run oriented offense that had their best success doing so. The offense was never able to create enough big plays, was not built to comeback from 10+ point deficits to any degree & folded like tents against elite competition.Additionally throwing against 9-10 man fronts has been an issue they simply have no answer for & opponents know it. The OL's pass protection has deteriorated & the skill play(including QB) has been largely below average if not worse. It all goes back to building and implementing a legit passing attack based on skill not scheme deception.I'm not sure we've heard anything pertaining to that out of Bowles & we should. The outward message from Bowles seems to say "I'm not changing my philosophy, we failed to close late in alot of games so we'll just improve the running game to run out the clock late & not change anything else".
