Vegas picks Darnold for rookie of the year

I agree with Vegas I was talking about this a couple of weeks ago on how Darnold is on the verge of being surrounded by 4 800+ yard receivers and a defense. Has a great chance to flash as a rookie.

I never once thought for a moment that Teddy Bridgewater would start a single game for us this year which is why I've predicted Sam as ROY since day one (nice to see Vegas aggrees with my thought process) however I'm curious to see what Darnold's odss were as of yesterday before the Teddy trade...

The RB position has dominated the QB position in regards to this award. 33 (RB) to only 9 (QB) so I'm expecting (as is Vegas) for my dude Saquon Barkley to put up a dog fight as my favorite RB drafted since dating back to Adrian Peterson.

I'm not a believer in Allen or Mayfield whatsoever it'll be a two horse race between Darnold and Barkley.

 

The dark horse is Lamar Jackson.

 

Hard to process the idea of the Jets being set at QB. It’s never happened as long as I’ve been a fan. We got some good years out of a few journeymen, Pennington and KOB started well but ended poorly, and crappola like Sanchez, Nagle, Geno, Hackenberg,

This could be quite the development.

 

But but Sack Juan Barkley was touched by GOD!

 

I don't think he'll stand a chance to win the award.

He'll start off from way back behind (in the race) because I can't picture Baltimore benching Flacco until their either mathematically eliminated or close to it.

He looked so much better at scrambling and running the football than he did throwing throughout the preseason.

But i do believe that he can one day prove to be a better QB than Allen, Rosen and especially Mayfield but it could take a good 2-3 years of developing his Quarterbacking traits before he takes the next step as an NFL QB.

Right now I just feel he's really raw and depends more on his elite athleticism rather than that of trusting his arm and making reads (only had a 50% completion rate through 5 games).

He has promise I just don't think he'll have a large enough same size to stick with day one rookie starters in regard to ROY.

 

He's simply not an every down QB (if there is such a thing) His accuracy is not good. His arm is not particularly strong. Forget about asking him to make pre-snap reads. Outside the pocket he can be deadly in regards to pure athleticism and ability to elude the rush. If you keep him in the pocket he will not hurt you at all. Plus kind of a thin build so I wonder if he can stand up to NFL abuse like a Roethlisberger

He's not Josh Allen or Hackenberg bad accuracy wise, but he's just not a naturally accurate thrower

He may end up better than Allen. But he won't be anywhere close to Rosen or Mayfield

He didn't look good this pre season playing the most vanilla D's. It will look ugly when they start mixing things up. There was a play I recall against Miami he has two very wide open guys in front of him but he decides to take off and dive forward.

 

Only being born in 1985 I only have flashback memories of watching O'Brien with my older brother and was far too young to process what I was watching on the T.V but I've witnessed and have vivid memories of the likes of Boomer, O'Donnell, Vinny T, Ray Lucas, Quincy Carter, Bollinger, Clemens, Favre, Sanchez, Geno, Mike Vick, Fitz, Petty, Hackenberg, McCown and my All-Time favorite; Chad Pennington.

It still bothers me not knowing just how far Pennington could've taken us if not for arm limitations due to multiple injuries. Just take a look at his 2002 season before suffering any injuries. It's depressing because he was absolutely disgusting.

2002: Threw for over 3,000+ yards with an insane accuracy percentage of 69.9% along with 22 TD's/6 INT's along with a Franchise best QB Rating of 104.2 despite only starting 12 games (8-4). That was the season Chad and our Jets destroyed Peyton Manning and the Colts 41-0.

Makes me sick knowing that was the type of elite QB Penny was before injuries but nonetheless Sam Darnold has been a breath of fresh air and for that I can not wait to enjoy the journey to success him earning the Rookie of the Year award would be an awesome first step in the right direction.

 

Yeah I've never put much stock into preseason scrimmages because as you mentioned; vanilla defenses, a lack of exotic blitz packages and no real coaching philosophy schemes on either side of the ball.

But with that said, I've felt since day one that Baker Mayfield has monumental bust status potential.

He had a decent preseason and even looked good at times and has shown flashes but at times he looked like complete dog shit when trying to stand tall in the pocket and more times than not, he breaks his own pocket I could be wrong and only time will tell but I think he's going to get embarrassed once out there and finally facing NFL defenses with a real defensive game plan.

And I was never buying the whole Mayfield as the "most accurate QB" of them all. He played in a spread offense with some of the best offensive talent the state of Oklahoma could recruit and played within a conference where damn near every defense gives up a massive amount of passing yards and points.

I don't want to bash the kid too hard, he's just a kid and a rookie but mentally I've just never been able to believe in him. I've tried, but just couldn't.

I think Darnold & Barkley will be a two horse race with them going back and fourth week to week and could come down to who's more durable and avoids injuries.

One dark horse I have is Alabama WR, Calvin Ridley. He's in a good situation for success with a top tier QB in Matt Ryan and playing alongside another Bama WR in Julio Jones who demans double teams and safety help. Ridley may begin to knife defenses because of it. The WR position always has a chance behind the obvious RB/QB positions too.

My true dark horse is 4th round RB for Indy out of the ACC & N.C State in Nyheim Hines. I don't know too much about him but he's literally blazing fast and as an FSU fan I just remember him slashing through our defense each of the past two years. Not sure if he'll crack their depth chart as a starter but if so watch out he's got track and field speed.

 

Hey........if he wins, it means we are set up well for the future. Fingers crossed, but with this O-line, I'll believe it when I see it.

 

If I was a betting man....and I am, Barley is the CLEAR choice here...theyre gonna give me better value on the RB than the QB? Fuuuuuck yeah Im taking teh RB

 

Hines has fumbled an absurd amount of times in preseason already. The RB to watch in Indy is Jordan Wilkins - 6 ft 2 220 lbs with great vision. I'm pretty sure he is getting the starting crack at the gig this year with Hines fumble issues and Mack banged up.

I would throw my money on Barkley. Better odds and you know for a fact the Giants are going to feed him just to prove the pick was justified.

 

Just hedge your bets. Take Darnold and Saquon and walk away with a (damn near) guaranteed lock.

My 1st uncle just moved out to Henderson, Nevada told me it's less than 30 minutes away from Vegas. He called me on Monday telling me to have my picks in and ready by this Sunday.

I'm not a big gambler but I plan on splitting up 1k between 4 bets ala Darnold/Barkley for ROY, Jets with the season over (6) and the TB Buccaneers with the season under (6.5) and see what happens (I live in Tampa Bay area and the Bucs are awful).

They say never bet with your heart but I can't help it. I'm confident with these four picks.

Kinda insane IMO usually RB has the best chance to win OROTY and this was a stacked class for RB. QB is a much harder tansition but man wouldn't it be nice if they are right. I'd hedge my bet on barkley personally. RB is way easier to come into the NFL as a rookie then QB is

 

so if you take Darnold and Barkley you would win 25$ if Barkley wins and lose 25$ if Darnold wins ! take it to the bank

 

I agree especially with regards to Saquon Barkley ala my favorite RB prospect coming out since AP28.

But how easy would it be for a Rookie RB running without an O-Line who ranked 23rd in average yards per rush attempt, 26th in rushing yards per game and 28th in TD runs; all while behind behind an aging 37 year old QB in Eli Manning on the brink of breaking down?

Nonetheless I'll still hedge my ROY bet with Saqon Barkley but feel 2018 could become an uphill battle for him.

 

i see your point but the giants did improve the o-line. eli is who he is and not a good QB but can still make you pay if you try and load the box and ODB is a top 3 WR who missed all of last year and engram is an up and coming TE. their offense this eyar will be much better with the additons of solder, ODB coming back, engram having a year under his belt, and barkely in the backfield. the giants RBs last year were awful. so bad i think all 3 are out of the NFL this season. gallman, darkwa, and i can't remember the other guy. they also added jonathan stewart as a short yardage back
